1 Entonces el rey envió, y juntaron a él todos los ancianos de Judá y de Jerusalén.

2 Y subió el rey a la Casa del SEÑOR con todos los varones de Judá, y con todos los moradores de Jerusalén, con los sacerdotes y profetas y con todo el pueblo, desde el más chico hasta el más grande; y leyó, a oídos de todos, todas las palabras del libro del pacto que había sido hallado en la Casa del SEÑOR.

3 Y poniéndose el rey en pie junto a la columna, hizo alianza delante del SEÑOR, de que irían en pos del SEÑOR, y guardarían sus mandamientos, y sus testimonios, y sus estatutos, con todo el corazón y con toda el alma, y que cumplirían las palabras de la alianza que estaban escritas en aquel libro. Y todo el pueblo confirmó el pacto.

4 Entonces mandó el rey al sumo sacerdote Hilcías, y a los sacerdotes de la segunda orden, y a los guardianes de la puerta, que sacasen del templo del SEÑOR todos los vasos que habían sido hechos para Baal, y para el bosque, y para toda la corte del cielo; y los quemó fuera de Jerusalén en el campo de Cedrón, e hizo llevar las cenizas de ellos a Bet-el

5 Y quitó a los camoreos, que habían puesto los reyes de Judá para que quemasen incienso en los altos en las ciudades de Judá, y en los alrededores de Jerusalén; y asimismo a los que quemaban incienso a Baal, al sol, y a la luna, y a los signos, y a todo el ejército del cielo.

6 Hizo también sacar <I>la entalladura</I> del bosque fuera de la Casa del SEÑOR, fuera de Jerusalén, al arroyo de Cedrón, y la quemó en el arroyo de Cedrón, y la tornó en polvo, y echó el polvo de ella sobre los sepulcros de los hijos del pueblo.

7 Asimismo derribó las casas de los sodomitas que estaban en la Casa del SEÑOR, en las cuales tejían las mujeres pabellones para el bosque.

8 E hizo venir todos los sacerdotes de las ciudades de Judá, y profanó los altos donde los sacerdotes quemaban incienso, desde Gabaa hasta Beerseba; y derribó los altares de las puertas <I>y los</I> que <I>estaban</I> a la entrada de la puerta de Josué, gobernador de la ciudad; <I>y los</I> que <I>estaban</I> a la mano izquierda, a la puerta de la ciudad.

9 Pero los sacerdotes de los altos no subían al altar del SEÑOR en Jerusalén, mas comían panes sin levadura entre sus hermanos.

10 Asimismo profanó a Tofet, que <I>está</I> en el valle del hijo de Hinom, para que ninguno pasase su hijo o su hija por fuego a Moloc.

11 Asimismo quitó los caballos que los reyes de Judá habían dedicado al sol a la entrada del templo del SEÑOR, junto a la cámara de Natán-melec eunuco, el cual tenía cargo de los ejidos; y quemó al fuego los carros del sol.

12 Asimismo derribó el rey los altares que <I>estaban</I> sobre la techumbre de la sala de Acaz, que los reyes de Judá habían hecho, y los altares que había hecho Manasés en los dos atrios de la Casa del SEÑOR; y de allí corrió y arrojó el polvo en el arroyo de Cedrón.

13 Asimismo profanó el rey los altos que <I>estaban</I> delante de Jerusalén, a la mano derecha del monte de la destrucción, los cuales Salomón rey de Israel había edificado a Astarot, abominación de los sidonios, y a Quemos abominación de Moab, y a Milcom abominación de los hijos de Amón.

14 Y quebró las estatuas, y taló los bosques, y llenó el lugar de ellos de huesos de hombres

15 Asimismo el altar que <I>estaba</I> en Bet-el, <I>y</I> el alto que había hecho Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar a Israel, aquel altar y el alto destruyó; y quemó el alto, y tornó <I>el altar</I> en polvo, y puso fuego al bosque.

16 Y <I>se</I> volvió Josías, y vio los sepulcros que <I>estaban</I> allí en el monte, y envió y quitó los huesos de los sepulcros, y los quemó sobre el altar para contaminarlo, conforme a la palabra del SEÑOR la cual había profetizado el varón de Dios, que había profetizado estos negocios.

17 Y <I>después</I> dijo: ¿Qué título es este que veo? Y los de la ciudad le respondieron: Este <I>es</I> el sepulcro del varón de Dios que vino de Judá, y profetizó estas cosas que tú has hecho sobre el altar de Bet-el.

18 Y él dijo: Dejadlo; ninguno mueva sus huesos; y así fueron salvados sus huesos, <I>y</I> los huesos del profeta que había venido de Samaria.

19 <I>Finalmente</I> todas las casas de los altos que <I>estaban</I> en las ciudades de Samaria, las cuales habían hecho los reyes de Israel para provocar a ira, Josías las quitó, e hizo de ellas como había hecho en Bet-el

20 Y mató sobre los altares a todos los sacerdotes de los altos que allí estaban, y quemó sobre ellos los huesos de los hombres, y se volvió a Jerusalén.

21 <I>Entonces</I> mandó el rey a todo el pueblo, diciendo: Haced la pascua al SEÑOR vuestro Dios, conforme a lo que está escrito en el libro de esta alianza

22 No fue hecha tal pascua desde los tiempos de los jueces que gobernaron a Israel, ni en todos los tiempos de los reyes de Israel, y de los reyes de Judá.

23 A los dieciocho años del rey Josías fue hecha aquella pascua al SEÑOR en Jerusalén.

24 Asimismo barrió Josías los pitones, adivinos, y terafines, y todas las abominaciones que se veían en la tierra de Judá y en Jerusalén, para confirmar las palabras de la ley que estaban escritas en el libro que el sacerdote Hilcías había hallado en la Casa del SEÑOR.

25 No hubo tal rey antes de él que <I>así</I> se convirtiese al SEÑOR de todo su corazón, y de toda su alma, y de todas su fuerzas, conforme a toda la ley de Moisés; ni después de él nació otro tal.

26 Con todo eso el SEÑOR no se volvió del furor de su grande ira, con que se había encendido su ira contra Judá, por todas las provocaciones con que Manasés le había provocado a ira.

27 Y dijo el SEÑOR: También tengo que quitar de mi presencia a Judá, como quité a Israel, y tengo que abominar a esta ciudad que había escogido, a Jerusalén, y a la Casa de la cual <I>yo</I> había dicho: Mi nombre será allí.

28 Lo demás de los hechos de Josías, y todas las cosas que hizo, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá?

29 En aquellos días Faraón Necao rey de Egipto subió contra el rey de Asiria al río Eufrates, y salió contra él el rey Josías; pero aquél así que le vio, lo mató en Meguido.

30 Y sus siervos lo pusieron en un carro, y lo trajeron muerto de Meguido a Jerusalén, y lo sepultaron en su sepulcro. Entonces el pueblo de la tierra tomó a Joacaz hijo de Josías, y lo ungieron y lo pusieron por rey en lugar de su padre.

31 De veintitrés años era Joacaz cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó tres meses en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre <I>fue</I> Hamutal, hija de Jeremías de Libna.

32 Y él hizo lo malo en ojos del SEÑOR, conforme a todas las cosas que sus padres habían hecho.

33 Y lo echó preso Faraón Necao en Ribla en la provincia de Hamat, reinando él en Jerusalén; e impuso sobre la tierra una multa de cien talentos de plata, y uno de oro.

34 Entonces Faraón Necao puso por rey a Eliacim hijo de Josías, en lugar de Josías su padre, y le mudó el nombre <I>en el de</I> Joacim; y tomó a Joacaz, y lo llevó a Egipto, y murió allí.

35 Y Joacim pagó a Faraón la plata y el oro; e hizo apreciar la tierra para dar <I>este</I> dinero conforme al mandamiento de Faraón, sacando de cada uno, según la estimación <I>de su hacienda</I> , la plata y oro de todo el pueblo de la tierra, para dar a Faraón Necao.

36 De veinticinco años era Joacim cuando comenzó a reinar, y once años reinó en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre <I>fue</I> Zebuda hija de Pedaías, de Ruma

37 E hizo lo malo en ojos del SEÑOR, conforme a todas las cosas que sus padres habían hecho.

1 Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

2 He went up to the temple of the LORD with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets—all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the LORD.

3 The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the LORD—to follow the LORD and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.

4 The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the LORD all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley and took the ashes to Bethel.

5 He did away with the idolatrous priests appointed by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the towns of Judah and on those around Jerusalem—those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations and to all the starry hosts.

6 He took the Asherah pole from the temple of the LORD to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem and burned it there. He ground it to powder and scattered the dust over the graves of the common people.

7 He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes that were in the temple of the LORD, the quarters where women did weaving for Asherah.

8 Josiah brought all the priests from the towns of Judah and desecrated the high places, from Geba to Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. He broke down the gateway at the entrance of the Gate of Joshua, the city governor, which was on the left of the city gate.

9 Although the priests of the high places did not serve at the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, they ate unleavened bread with their fellow priests.

10 He desecrated Topheth, which was in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, so no one could use it to sacrifice their son or daughter in the fire to Molek.

11 He removed from the entrance to the temple of the LORD the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun. They were in the court near the room of an official named Nathan-Melek. Josiah then burned the chariots dedicated to the sun.

12 He pulled down the altars the kings of Judah had erected on the roof near the upper room of Ahaz, and the altars Manasseh had built in the two courts of the temple of the LORD. He removed them from there, smashed them to pieces and threw the rubble into the Kidron Valley.

13 The king also desecrated the high places that were east of Jerusalem on the south of the Hill of Corruption—the ones Solomon king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the vile goddess of the Sidonians, for Chemosh the vile god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable god of the people of Ammon.

14 Josiah smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles and covered the sites with human bones.

15 Even the altar at Bethel, the high place made by Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin—even that altar and high place he demolished. He burned the high place and ground it to powder, and burned the Asherah pole also.

16 Then Josiah looked around, and when he saw the tombs that were there on the hillside, he had the bones removed from them and burned on the altar to defile it, in accordance with the word of the LORD proclaimed by the man of God who foretold these things.

17 The king asked, “What is that tombstone I see?” The people of the city said, “It marks the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced against the altar of Bethel the very things you have done to it.”

18 “Leave it alone,” he said. “Don’t let anyone disturb his bones.” So they spared his bones and those of the prophet who had come from Samaria.

19 Just as he had done at Bethel, Josiah removed all the shrines at the high places that the kings of Israel had built in the towns of Samaria and that had aroused the LORD’s anger.

20 Josiah slaughtered all the priests of those high places on the altars and burned human bones on them. Then he went back to Jerusalem.

21 The king gave this order to all the people: “Celebrate the Passover to the LORD your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.”

22 Neither in the days of the judges who led Israel nor in the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah had any such Passover been observed.

23 But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, this Passover was celebrated to the LORD in Jerusalem.

24 Furthermore, Josiah got rid of the mediums and spiritists, the household gods, the idols and all the other detestable things seen in Judah and Jerusalem. This he did to fulfill the requirements of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had discovered in the temple of the LORD.

25 Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the LORD as he did—with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses.

26 Nevertheless, the LORD did not turn away from the heat of his fierce anger, which burned against Judah because of all that Manasseh had done to arouse his anger.

27 So the LORD said, “I will remove Judah also from my presence as I removed Israel, and I will reject Jerusalem, the city I chose, and this temple, about which I said, ‘My Name shall be there.’ ”

28 As for the other events of Josiah’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?

29 While Josiah was king, Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt went up to the Euphrates River to help the king of Assyria. King Josiah marched out to meet him in battle, but Necho faced him and killed him at Megiddo.

30 Josiah’s servants brought his body in a chariot from Megiddo to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and anointed him and made him king in place of his father.

31 Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother’s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah.

32 He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, just as his predecessors had done.

33 Pharaoh Necho put him in chains at Riblah in the land of Hamath so that he might not reign in Jerusalem, and he imposed on Judah a levy of a hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.

34 Pharaoh Necho made Eliakim son of Josiah king in place of his father Josiah and changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. But he took Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt, and there he died.

35 Jehoiakim paid Pharaoh Necho the silver and gold he demanded. In order to do so, he taxed the land and exacted the silver and gold from the people of the land according to their assessments.

36 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother’s name was Zebidah daughter of Pedaiah; she was from Rumah.

37 And he did evil in the eyes of the LORD, just as his predecessors had done.
