2 Samuele 15

1 ORA, dopo queste cose, avvenne che Absalom si fornì di carri e di cavalli; e cinquant’uomini correvano davanti a lui.

2 Ed egli si levava la mattina, e si fermava allato alla via della porta; e se vi era alcuno che avesse qualche piato, per lo quale gli convenisse venire al re per giudicio, Absalom lo chiamava, e gli diceva: Di qual città sei tu? E colui gli rispondeva: Il tuo servitore è di tale e tale tribù d’Israele.

3 Ed Absalom gli diceva: Vedi, le tue ragioni son buone e diritte; ma tu non hai alcuno che ti ascolti da parte del re.

4 E Absalom diceva: Oh! fossi io pur costituito giudice nel paese; acciocchè chiunque avrebbe alcun piato, o affare di giudicio, venisse a me! io gli farei ragione.

5 E, se alcuno gli si accostava per prosternarsi davanti a lui, egli stendeva la mano, e lo prendeva, e lo baciava.

6 E così faceva Absalom a tutti quelli d’Israele che venivano al re per giudicio; e furava il cuore di que’ d’Israele.

7 Or avvenne, in capo di quarant’anni, che Absalom disse al re: Deh! lascia che io vada in Hebron, per adempiere un mio voto che io ho fatto al Signore.

8 Perciocchè, mentre io dimorava in Ghesur, in Siria, il tuo servitore fece un voto, dicendo: Se pure il Signore mi riconduce in Gerusalemme, io sacrificherò al Signore.

9 E il re gli disse: Va’ in pace. Egli adunque si levò, e andò in Hebron.

10 Or Absalom avea mandate per tutte le tribù d’Israele delle persone che dessero loro la posta, dicendo: Quando voi udirete il suon della tromba, dite: Absalom è fatto re in Hebron.

11 E con Absalom andarono dugent’uomini di Gerusalemme, ch’erano stati convitati; e vi andarono nella loro semplicità, non sapendo nulla.

12 Ed Absalom, quando fu per sacrificare i sacrificii, mandò per Ahitofel Ghilonita, consigliere di Davide, che venisse da Ghilo, sua città; e la conguira divenne potente, e il popolo andava crescendo di numero appresso di Absalom.

13 Ora un messo venne a Davide, dicendo: Il cuor degl’Israeliti è dietro ad Absalom.

14 Allora Davide disse a tutti i suoi servitori ch’erano con lui in Gerusalemme: Levatevi, fuggiamocene; perciocchè noi non potremo scampare d’innanzi ad Absalom; affrettatevi a camminare; chè talora egli di subito non ci raggiunga, e non trabocchi la ruina addosso a noi; e non percuota la città, mettendola a fil di spada.

15 Ed i servitori del re gli dissero: Ecco i tuoi servitori, per fare interamente secondo che al re, mio signore, parrà bene.

16 Il re adunque uscì fuori, e tutta la sua casa lo seguitò. E il re lasciò dieci donne concubine a guardia della casa.

17 E quando il re fu uscito, con tutto il popolo che lo seguitava, si fermarono in una casa remota.

18 E tutti i suoi servitori, con tutti i Cheretei, e tutti i Peletei, camminavano allato a lui; e tutti i Ghittei, ch’erano seicent’uomini, venuti di Gat al suo seguito, passavano davanti al re.

19 E il re disse a Ittai Ghitteo: Perchè andresti ancora tu con noi? ritornatene, e dimora col re; perciocchè tu sei forestiere, e sei per andartene presto al tuo luogo.

20 Pur ieri ci venisti; e ti farei io andar vagando qua e là con noi? ma, quant’è a me, io vo dove potrò; ritornatene, e rimena i tuoi fratelli; benignità e verità dimorino teco.

21 Ma Ittai rispose al re, e disse: Come vive il Signore, e come vive il re, mio signore, dovunque il re, mio signore, sarà, così per morire, come per vivere, il tuo servitore vi sarà ancora.

22 Davide adunque disse ad Ittai: Va’, passa oltre. Così Ittai Ghitteo passò oltre con tutta la sua gente, e tutti i fanciulli ch’egli avea seco.

23 E tutto il popolo del paese piangeva con gran grida, mentre tutta quella gente passava. E il re passò il torrente di Chidron; e tutta la gente passò, traendo verso il deserto.

24 Or ecco, quivi era ancora Sadoc, con tutti i Leviti, portando d’Arca del Patto di Dio; ed essi posarono l’Arca di Dio, mentre Ebiatar saliva, finchè tutto il popolo ebbe finito di uscire della città.

25 Ma il re disse a Sadoc: Riporta l’Arca di Dio nella città; se io trovo grazia appo il Signore, egli mi ricondurrà, e me la farà vedere, insieme col suo abitacolo;

26 ma, se pure egli dice così: Io non ti gradisco; eccomi, facciami egli come gli piacerà.

27 Il re disse ancora al sacerdote Sadoc: Non sei tu il veggente? ritornatene in pace nella città, tu, ed Ebiatar, insieme co’ vostri due figliuoli: Ahimaas, tuo figliuolo, e Gionatan, figliuolo di Ebiatar.

28 Vedete, io mi andrò trattenendo nelle campagne del deserto, finchè mi venga rapportata alcuna novella da parte vostra.

29 Sadoc adunque, ed Ebiatar, riportarono l’Arca di Dio in Gerusalemme, e dimorarono quivi.

30 E Davide saliva per la salita degli Ulivi, piangendo, ed avendo il capo coperto, e camminava scalzo. E tutta la gente ch’egli avea seco avea il capo coperto, e saliva piangendo.

31 E fu rapportato e detto a Davide: Ahitofel è fra quelli che si son congiurati con Absalom. E Davide disse: Signore, rendi, ti prego, pazzo il consiglio di Ahitofel.

32 Or avvenne che, come Davide fu giunto alla cima del monte, dove egli voleva adorare Iddio, ecco, Husai Archita gli venne incontro, avendo la vesta stracciata, e della terra in su la testa.

33 E Davide gli disse: Se tu passi oltre meco, tu mi sarai di gravezza;

34 ma, se tu te ne ritorni nella città, e dici ad Absalom: Io sarò tuo servitore, o re; ab antico io sono stato servitore di tuo padre, ed ora sarò il tuo; tu mi romperai il consiglio di Ahitofel.

35 E non avrai tu quivi teco i sacerdoti Sadoc ed Ebiatar, a’ quali farai assapere tutto quello che tu intenderai dalla casa del re?

36 Ecco, là son con loro i due lor figlioli, Ahimaas, figliuolo di Sadoc, e Gionatan, figliuolo di Ebiatar; per essi mandatemi a dire tutto quello che avrete udito.

37 Così Husai, famigliare amico di Davide, venne nella città, allora appunto che Absalom entrava in Gerusalemme.

1 After this, Absalom provided a chariot and horses for himself, and an escort of fifty men.

2 He would get up early and go and stand by the road at the city gate. Whenever someone came there with a dispute that he wanted the king to settle, Absalom would call him over and ask him where he was from. And after the man had told him what tribe he was from,

3 Absalom would say, "Look, the law is on your side, but there is no representative of the king to hear your case."

4 And he would add, "How I wish I were a judge! Then anyone who had a dispute or a claim could come to me, and I would give him justice."

5 When the man would approach Absalom to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out, take hold of him, and kiss him.

6 Absalom did this with every Israelite who came to the king for judgment, and so he won their loyalty.

7 After four years Absalom said to King David, "Sir, let me go to Hebron and keep a promise I made to the Lord.

8 While I was living in Geshur in Syria, I promised the Lord that if he would take me back to Jerusalem, I would worship him in Hebron."

9 "Go in peace," the king said. So Absalom went to Hebron.

10 But he sent messengers to all the tribes of Israel to say, "When you hear the sound of trumpets, shout, "Absalom has become king at Hebron!' "

11 There were two hundred men who at Absalom's invitation had gone from Jerusalem with him; they knew nothing of the plot and went in all good faith.

12 And while he was offering sacrifices, Absalom also sent to the town of Gilo for Ahithophel, who was one of King David's advisers. The plot against the king gained strength, and Absalom's followers grew in number.

13 A messenger reported to David, "The Israelites are pledging their loyalty to Absalom."

14 So David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, "We must get away at once if we want to escape from Absalom! Hurry! Or else he will soon be here and defeat us and kill everyone in the city!"

15 "Yes, Your Majesty," they answered. "We are ready to do whatever you say."

16 So the king left, accompanied by all his family and officials, except for ten concubines, whom he left behind to take care of the palace.

17 As the king and all his men were leaving the city, they stopped at the last house.

18 All his officials stood next to him as the royal bodyguards passed by in front of him. The six hundred soldiers who had followed him from Gath also passed by,

19 and the king said to Ittai, their leader, "Why are you going with us? Go back and stay with the new king. You are a foreigner, a refugee away from your own country.

20 You have lived here only a short time, so why should I make you wander around with me? I don't even know where I'm going. Go back and take all your people with you - and may the Lord be kind and faithful to you."

21 But Ittai answered, "Your Majesty, I swear to you in the Lord's name that I will always go with you wherever you go, even if it means death."

22 "Fine!" David answered. "March on!" So Ittai went on with all his men and their dependents.

23 The people cried loudly as David's followers left. The king crossed Kidron Brook, followed by his men, and together they went out toward the wilderness.

24 Zadok the priest was there, and with him were the Levites, carrying the sacred Covenant Box. They set it down and didn't pick it up again until all the people had left the city. The priest Abiathar was there too.

25 Then the king said to Zadok, "Take the Covenant Box back to the city. If the Lord is pleased with me, some day he will let me come back to see it and the place where it stays.

26 But if he isn't pleased with me - well, then, let him do to me what he wishes."

27 And he went on to say to Zadok, "Look, take your son Ahimaaz and Abiathar's son Jonathan and go back to the city in peace.

28 Meanwhile, I will wait at the river crossings in the wilderness until I receive news from you."

29 So Zadok and Abiathar took the Covenant Box back into Jerusalem and stayed there.

30 David went on up the Mount of Olives crying; he was barefoot and had his head covered as a sign of grief. All who followed him covered their heads and cried also.

31 When David was told that Ahithophel had joined Absalom's rebellion, he prayed, "Please, Lord, turn Ahithophel's advice into nonsense!"

32 When David reached the top of the hill, where there was a place of worship, his trusted friend Hushai the Archite met him with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.

33 David said to him, "You will be of no help to me if you come with me,

34 but you can help me by returning to the city and telling Absalom that you will now serve him as faithfully as you served his father. And do all you can to oppose any advice that Ahithophel gives.

35 The priests Zadok and Abiathar will be there; tell them everything you hear in the king's palace.

36 They have their sons Ahimaaz and Jonathan with them, and you can send them to me with all the information you gather."

37 So Hushai, David's friend, returned to the city just as Absalom was arriving.
