2 Samuele 18

1 Or Davide fece la rassegna della gente ch’era con lui, e costituì sopra loro de’ capitani di migliaia, e dei capitani di centinaia.

2 E Davide mandò il popolo, il terzo sotto la condotta di Ioab, l’altro terzo sotto la condotta di Abisai, figliuolo di Seruia, fratello di Ioab, e l’altro terzo, sotto la condotta d’Ittai Ghitteo. Poi il re disse al popolo: Anch’io del tutto uscirò con voi.

3 Ma il popolo rispose: Tu non uscirai; perciocchè, se pur noi fuggiamo, essi non ne terran conto; ed avvegnachè morisse la metà di noi, che siamo pur ora intorno a diecimila, non ne terrebbero conto; ora dunque meglio è che tu ci dia soccorso dalla città.

4 E il re disse loro: Io farò ciò che vi par bene. Così il re si fermò allato alla porta, mentre tutto il popolo usciva, a centinaia ed a migliaia.

5 E il re comandò, e disse a Ioab, e ad Abisai, e ad Ittai: Trattatemi dolcemente il giovane Absalom. E tutto il popolo udì, quando il re diede questo comandamento a tutti i capitani intorno ad Absalom.

6 Il popolo adunque uscì fuori in campagna incontro ad Israele; e la battaglia si diede nella selva di Efraim.

7 E quivi fu sconfitto il popolo d’Israele dalla gente di Davide; e in quel dì la sconfitta fu grande in quel luogo, cioè, di ventimila uomini.

8 E la battaglia si sparse quivi per tutto il paese; e la selva consumò in quel giorno del popolo assai più che la spada non ne avea consumato.

9 Ed Absalom s’incontrò nella gente di Davide. Or egli cavalcava un mulo, e il mulo entrò sotto il folto di una gran quercia, e il capo di Absalom si appese alla quercia, ed egli restò sospeso fra cielo e terra; e il mulo, ch’egli avea sotto di sè, passò oltre.

10 Ed un uomo lo vide, e lo rapportò a Ioab, e disse: Ecco, io ho veduto Absalom appeso ad una quercia.

11 E Ioab disse a colui che gli rapportava questo: Ecco, poichè tu l’hai veduto, perchè non l’hai percosso, e messo per terra in quel luogo stesso? e a me sarebbe stato il darti dieci sicli d’argento e una cintura. Ma quell’uomo disse a Ioab:

12 Quantunque io avessi nelle palme delle mani mille sicli d’argento contanti, non però metterei la mano addosso al figliuolo del re: perciocchè il re ha dato comandamento, udenti noi, a te, e ad Abisai, e ad Ittai, dicendo: Guardate che alcun di voi non metta la mano sopra il giovane Absalom.

13 E se io avessi fatta questa fraude contro alla mia vita, poichè cosa niuna è occulta al re, tu te ne staresti lontan da me.

14 E Ioab rispose: Io non me ne starò così a bada in presenza tua. E prese tre dardi in mano, e li ficcò nel petto di Absalom, ch’era ancora vivo in mezzo della quercia.

15 Poi dieci fanti, scudieri di Ioab, circondarono Absalom, e lo percossero, e l’ammazzarono.

16 Allora Ioab sonò con la tromba, e il popolo se ne ritornò dalla caccia d’Israele; perciocchè Ioab rattenne il popolo.

17 Poi presero Absalom, e lo gittarono nella selva, dentro una gran fossa; e alzarono sopra quella un grandissimo mucchio di pietre; e tutto Israele fuggì, ciascuno alle sue stanze.

18 Or Absalom, mentre era in vita, avea preso il piliere ch’è nella Valle del re, e se l’avea rizzato; perciocchè diceva: Io non ho figliuoli, per conservar la memoria del mio nome; e chiamò quel piliere del suo nome. Laonde infino a questo giorno è stato chiamato: Il piliere di Absalom.

19 ED Ahimaas, figliuolo di Sadoc, disse: Deh! ch’io corra, e porti al re queste buone novelle, che il Signore gli ha fatto ragione, liberandolo dalla mano de’ suoi nemici.

20 Ma Ioab gli disse: Tu non saresti oggi portatore di buone novelle; un altro giorno porterai le novelle; ma oggi tu non porteresti buone novelle; perciocchè il figliuolo del re è morto.

21 E Ioab disse ad un Etiopo: Va’, rapporta al re ciò che tu hai veduto. E l’Etiopo s’inchinò a Ioab, e poi si mise a correre.

22 E Ahimaas, figliuolo di Sadoc, disse di nuovo a Ioab: Checchè sia, lascia, ti prego, che ancora io corra dietro all’Etiopo. E Ioab gli disse: Perchè vuoi così correre, figliuol mio, poichè non ti si presenta alcuna buona novella a portare?

23 Ed egli disse: Checchè sia, io correrò. E Ioab gli disse: Corri. Ahimaas adunque si mise a correre per la via della pianura, ed avanzò l’Etiopo.

24 Or Davide sedeva fra le due porte; e la guardia ch’era alla veletta salì in sul tetto della porta, in sul muro, ed alzò gli occhi, e riguardò; ed ecco un uomo che correva tutto solo.

25 E la guardia gridò, e lo fece assapere al re. E il re disse: Se egli è solo, egli porta novelle. E colui si andava del continuo accostando.

26 Poi la guardia vide un altro uomo che correva; e gridò al portinaio, e disse: Ecco un altro uomo che corre tutto solo. E il re disse: Anche costui porta novelle.

27 E la guardia disse: Il correr del primo mi pare il correre di Ahimaas, figliuolo di Sadoc. E il re disse: Costui è uomo da bene; egli deve venire per alcuna buona novella.

28 Allora Ahimaas gridò, e disse al re: Bene stii. E, dopo essersi inchinato in terra davanti al re sopra la sua faccia, disse: Benedetto sia il Signore Iddio tuo, il quale ti ha dati nelle mani quegli uomini che aveano levate le mani loro contro al re, mio signore.

29 E il re disse: Il giovane Absalom è egli sano e salvo? Ed Ahimaas disse: Io vidi una gran calca, quando Ioab mandò il fante del re, e me, tuo servitore; ma io non ho saputo che cosa si fosse.

30 E il re gli disse: Va’ da canto, e fermati là. Egli adunque andò da canto, e si fermò.

31 Ed ecco, l’Etiopo giunse, e disse: Il re, mio signore, riceva queste buone novelle, che il Signore ti ha oggi fatto ragione, liberandoti delle mani di tutti coloro che si erano levati contro a te.

32 E il re disse all’Etiopo: Il giovane Absalom è egli sano e salvo? E l’Etiopo rispose: Sieno i nemici del re, mio signore, e tutti quelli che si levano contro a te per male, come il giovane.

33 Allora il re si conturbò, e salì nella sala della porta, e pianse; e, mentre andava, diceva così: Figliuol mio Absalom! figliuol mio, figliuol mio Absalom! oh! fossi io pur morto in luogo tuo, figliuol mio Absalom, figliuol mio!

Good News Translation GNT

1 King David brought all his men together, divided them into units of a thousand and of a hundred, and placed officers in command of them.

2 Then he sent them out in three groups, with Joab and Joab's brother Abishai and Ittai from Gath, each in command of a group. And the king said to his men, "I will go with you myself."

3 "You mustn't go with us," they answered. "It won't make any difference to the enemy if the rest of us turn and run, or even if half of us are killed; but you are worth ten thousand of us. It will be better if you stay here in the city and send us help."

4 "I will do whatever you think best," the king answered. Then he stood by the side of the gate as his men marched out in units of a thousand and of a hundred.

5 He gave orders to Joab, Abishai, and Ittai: "For my sake don't harm the young man Absalom." And all the troops heard David give this command to his officers.

6 David's army went out into the countryside and fought the Israelites in Ephraim Forest.

7 The Israelites were defeated by David's men; it was a terrible defeat, with twenty thousand men killed that day.

8 The fighting spread over the countryside, and more men died in the forest than were killed in battle.

9 Suddenly Absalom met some of David's men. Absalom was riding a mule, and as it went under a large oak tree, Absalom's head got caught in the branches. The mule ran on and Absalom was left hanging in midair.

10 One of David's men saw him and reported to Joab, "Sir, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree!"

11 Joab answered, "If you saw him, why didn't you kill him on the spot? I myself would have given you ten pieces of silver and a belt."

12 But the man answered, "Even if you gave me a thousand pieces of silver, I wouldn't lift a finger against the king's son. We all heard the king command you and Abishai and Ittai, "For my sake don't harm the young man Absalom.'

13 But if I had disobeyed the king and killed Absalom, the king would have heard about it - he hears about everything - and you would not have defended me."

14 "I'm not going to waste any more time with you," Joab said. He took three spears and plunged them into Absalom's chest while he was still alive, hanging in the oak tree.

15 Then ten of Joab's soldiers closed in on Absalom and finished killing him.

16 Joab had the trumpet blown to stop the fighting, and his troops came back from pursuing the Israelites.

17 They took Absalom's body, threw it into a deep pit in the forest, and covered it with a huge pile of stones. All the Israelites fled to their own hometowns.

18 During his lifetime Absalom had built a monument for himself in King's Valley, because he had no son to keep his name alive. So he named it after himself, and to this day it is known as Absalom's Monument.

19 Then Ahimaaz son of Zadok said to Joab, "Let me run to the king with the good news that the Lord has saved him from his enemies."

20 "No," Joab said, "today you will not take any good news. Some other day you may do so, but not today, for the king's son is dead."

21 Then he said to his Ethiopian slave, "Go and tell the king what you have seen." The slave bowed and ran off.

22 Ahimaaz insisted, "I don't care what happens; please let me take the news also." "Why do you want to do it, my son?" Joab asked. "You will get no reward for it."

23 "Whatever happens," Ahimaaz said again, "I want to go." "Then go," Joab said. So Ahimaaz ran off down the road through the Jordan Valley, and soon he passed the slave.

24 David was sitting in the space between the inner and outer gates of the city. The lookout went up to the top of the wall and stood on the roof of the gateway; he looked out and saw a man running alone.

25 He called down and told the king, and the king said, "If he is alone, he is bringing good news." The runner kept coming closer.

26 Then the lookout saw another man running alone, and he called down to the gatekeeper, "Look! There's another man running!" The king answered, "This one also is bringing good news."

27 The lookout said, "I can see that the first man runs like Ahimaaz." "He's a good man," the king said, "and he is bringing good news."

28 Ahimaaz called out a greeting to the king, threw himself down to the ground before him, and said, "Praise the Lord your God, who has given you victory over the men who rebelled against Your Majesty!"

29 "Is the young man Absalom all right?" the king asked. Ahimaaz answered, "Sir, when your officer Joab sent me, I saw a great commotion, but I couldn't tell what it was."

30 "Stand over there," the king told him; and he went over and stood there.

31 Then the Ethiopian slave arrived and said to the king, "I have good news for Your Majesty! Today the Lord has given you victory over all who rebelled against you!"

32 "Is the young man Absalom all right?" the king asked. The slave answered, "I wish that what has happened to him would happen to all your enemies, sir, and to all who rebel against you."

33 The king was overcome with grief. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he cried, "O my son! My son Absalom! Absalom, my son! If only I had died in your place, my son! Absalom, my son!"
