1 ORA, dopo questo, Davide domandò il Signore, dicendo: Salirò io in alcuna delle città di Giuda? E il Signore gli disse: Sali. E Davide disse: Dove salirò io? E il Signore disse: In Hebron.

2 Davide adunque salì là, con le sue due mogli, Ahinoam Izreelita, ed Abigail ch’era stata moglie di Nabal da Carmel.

3 Davide vi menò eziandio la gente ch’era con lui, ciascuno con la sua famiglia; e dimorarono nella città di Hebron.

4 E que’ di Giuda vennero, e unsero quivi Davide per re sopra la casa di Giuda. Or fu rapportato e detto a Davide: Que’ di Iabes di Galaad son quelli che hanno seppellito Saulle.

5 E Davide mandò de’ messi a que’ di Iabes di Galaad, e fece loro dire: Benedetti siate voi appo il Signore; perciocchè avete usata questa benignità inverso il vostro signore Saulle, d’averlo seppellito.

6 Ora dunque il Signore usi inverso voi benignità e verità; io ancora vi renderò questo bene, che voi avete fatto in questo affare.

7 Perciò sieno ora le vostre mani rinforzate, e portatevi da valenti uomini; perciocchè Saulle, vostro signore, è morto; ma la casa di Giuda mi ha unto per re sopra loro.

8 Or Abner, figliuolo di Ner, capo dell’esercito di Saulle, prese Isboset, figliuolo di Saulle, e lo fece passare in Mahanaim.

9 E lo costituì re sopra Galaad, e sopra gli Asurei, e sopra Izreel, e sopra Efraim, e sopra Beniamino, e sopra tutto Israele.

10 Isboset, figliuolo di Saulle, era d’età di quarant’anni, quando cominciò a regnare sopra Israele, e regnò due anni. Ma la casa di Giuda seguitava Davide.

11 E lo spazio del tempo che Davide fu re in Hebron, sopra la casa di Giuda, fu di sett’anni, e di sei mesi.

12 OR Abner, figliuol di Ner, uscì, con la gente d’Isboset, figliuolo di Saulle, di Mahanaim, e venne in Gabaon.

13 Ioab, figliuolo di Seruia, uscì anch’esso con la gente di Davide; e si scontrarono insieme presso allo stagno di Gabaon; e gli uni si fermarono presso allo stagno di qua, e gli altri presso allo stagno di là.

14 Allora Abner disse a Ioab: Deh! levinsi alcuni fanti, ed armeggino in nostra presenza. E Ioab disse: Levinsi pure.

15 Quegli adunque si levarono, e passarono in numero uguale; dodici dalla parte di Beniamino, e d’Isboset, figliuolo di Saulle, e dodici della gente di Davide.

16 E ciascun di loro prese il suo compagno per la testa, e gli ficcò la spada nel fianco; e tutti insieme caddero morti. Per ciò fu quel luogo chiamato. Helcat-hassurim, ch’è in Gabaon.

17 Poi in quel dì vi fu una molto aspra battaglia; ed Abner, con la gente d’Israele fu sconfitto dalla gente di Davide.

18 Or quivi erano i tre figliuoli di Seruia, Ioab, ed Abisai ed Asael; ed Asael era leggier di gambe, come un cavriuolo ch’è per la campagna.

19 Ed Asael si mise a perseguitare Abner, e non si torceva di dietro a lui, nè a destra nè a sinistra.

20 Ed Abner rivoltosi indietro, gli disse: Sei tu Asael? Ed egli gli disse: Io son desso.

21 Ed Abner gli disse: Torciti a destra od a sinistra, e pigliati uno di questi fanti, e prenditi le sue spoglie. Ma Asael non volle torcersi di dietro a lui.

22 Ed Abner gli disse di nuovo: Torciti di dietro a me; perchè ti percoterei io, e ti farei cader morto a terra? e come alzerei io poi il viso davanti a Ioab, tuo fratello?

23 Ma egli non volle torcersi; laonde Abner lo ferì nella quinta costa, con la punta di dietro della lancia, talchè la lancia gli usciva per dietro; ed egli cadde quivi, e morì in quello stesso luogo; e chiunque veniva a quel luogo, dove Asael giaceva morto, si fermava.

24 Ma Ioab ed Abisai perseguitarono Abner; e il sole tramontò, quando giunsero al colle di Amma, il quale è dirincontro a Ghia, in su la via del deserto di Gabaon.

25 Ed i figliuoli di Beniamino si ricolsero dietro ad Abner; e, schieratisi insieme, si fermarono in su la sommità di un colle.

26 Ed Abner gridò a Ioab, e disse: La spada divorerà ella in perpetuo? non sai tu che vi sarà dell’amaritudine alla fine? infino a quando non comanderai tu alla gente che se ne ritorni dalla caccia dei suoi fratelli?

27 E Ioab disse: Come Iddio vive, se tu non avessi parlato, fin dalla mattina la gente se ne sarebbe ritratta, ciascuno indietro dal suo fratello.

28 Ioab adunque fece sonar con la tromba; e tutto il popolo si fermò, e non perseguitò più gl’Israeliti, e non continuò più a combattere.

29 Ed Abner e la sua gente camminarono tutta quella notte per la campagna; e passarono il Giordano, e traversarono tutta la contrada di Bitron, ed arrivarono in Mahanaim.

30 Ioab se ne ritornò anch’egli di dietro ad Abner; e, adunato tutto il popolo, si trovò che della gente di Davide ne mancavano diciannove, ed Asael.

31 Ma la gente di Davide avea percossi di que’ di Beniamino, e della gente di Abner, trecensessanta uomini, i quali erano morti.

32 Poi tolsero Asael, e lo seppellirono nella sepoltura di suo padre, la quale era in Bet-lehem. E Ioab e la sua gente camminarono tutta quella notte, e giunsero in Hebron in su lo schiarir del giorno.

1 After this, David asked the Lord, "Shall I go and take control of one of the towns of Judah?" "Yes," the Lord answered. "Which one?" David asked. "Hebron," the Lord said.

2 So David went to Hebron, taking with him his two wives: Ahinoam, who was from Jezreel, and Abigail, Nabal's widow, who was from Carmel.

3 He also took his men and their families, and they settled in the towns around Hebron.

4 Then the men of Judah came to Hebron and anointed David as king of Judah. When David heard that the people of Jabesh in Gilead had buried Saul,

5 he sent some men there with the message: "May the Lord bless you for showing your loyalty to your king by burying him.

6 And now may the Lord be kind and faithful to you. I too will treat you well because of what you have done.

7 Be strong and brave! Saul your king is dead, and the people of Judah have anointed me as their king."

8 The commander of Saul's army, Abner son of Ner, had fled with Saul's son Ishbosheth across the Jordan to Mahanaim.

9 There Abner made Ishbosheth king of the territories of Gilead, Asher, Jezreel, Ephraim, and Benjamin, and indeed over all Israel.

10 He was forty years old when he was made king of Israel, and he ruled for two years. But the tribe of Judah was loyal to David,

11 and he ruled in Hebron over Judah for seven and a half years.

12 Abner and the officials of Ishbosheth went from Mahanaim to the city of Gibeon.

13 Joab, whose mother was Zeruiah, and David's other officials met them at the pool, where they all sat down, one group on one side of the pool and the other group on the opposite side.

14 Abner said to Joab, "Let's have some of the young men from each side fight an armed contest." "All right," Joab answered.

15 So twelve men, representing Ishbosheth and the tribe of Benjamin, fought twelve of David's men.

16 Each man caught his opponent by the head and plunged his sword into his opponent's side, so that all twenty-four of them fell down dead together. And so that place in Gibeon is called "Field of Swords."

17 Then a furious battle broke out, and Abner and the Israelites were defeated by David's men.

18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Asahel, who could run as fast as a wild deer,

19 started chasing Abner, running straight for him.

20 Abner looked back and said, "Is that you, Asahel?" "Yes," he answered.

21 "Stop chasing me!" Abner said. "Run after one of the soldiers and take what he has." But Asahel kept on chasing him.

22 Once more Abner said to him, "Stop chasing me! Why force me to kill you? How could I face your brother Joab?"

23 But Asahel would not quit; so Abner, with a backward thrust of his spear, struck him through the stomach so that the spear came out at his back. Asahel dropped to the ground dead, and everyone who came to the place where he was lying stopped and stood there.

24 But Joab and Abishai started out after Abner, and at sunset they came to the hill of Ammah, which is to the east of Giah on the road to the wilderness of Gibeon.

25 The men from the tribe of Benjamin gathered around Abner again and took their stand on the top of a hill.

26 Abner called out to Joab, "Do we have to go on fighting forever? Can't you see that in the end there will be nothing but bitterness? We are your relatives. How long will it be before you order your men to stop chasing us?"

27 "I swear by the living God," Joab answered, "that if you had not spoken, my men would have kept on chasing you until tomorrow morning."

28 Then Joab blew the trumpet as a signal for his men to stop pursuing the Israelites; and so the fighting stopped.

29 Abner and his men marched through the Jordan Valley all that night; they crossed the Jordan River, and after marching all the next morning, they arrived back at Mahanaim.

30 When Joab gave up the chase, he gathered all his men and found that nineteen of them were missing, in addition to Asahel.

31 David's men had killed 360 of Abner's men from the tribe of Benjamin.

32 Joab and his men took Asahel's body and buried it in the family tomb at Bethlehem. Then they marched all night and at dawn arrived back at Hebron.
