1 E DAVIDE disse: Evvi più alcuno che sia rimasto della casa di Saulle, acciocchè io usi benignità inverso lui per amor di Gionatan?

2 Ora, nella casa di Saulle vi era un servitore, il cui nome era Siba, il qual fu chiamato a Davide. E il re gli disse: Sei tu Siba? Ed egli disse: Tuo servitore.

3 E il re disse: Non vi è egli più alcuno della casa di Saulle, ed io userò inverso lui la benignità di Dio? E Siba disse al re: Vi è ancora un figliuolo di Gionatan, ch’è storpiato de’ piedi.

4 E il re gli disse: Dove è egli? E Siba disse al re: Ecco, egli è in casa di Machir, figliuolo di Ammiel, in Lo-debar.

5 E il re Davide mandò a prenderlo dalla casa di Machir, figliuolo di Ammiel, da Lo-debar.

6 E quando Mefiboset, figliuolo di Saulle, fu venuto a Davide, si gittò in terra sopra la sua faccia, e si prosternò. E Davide disse: Mefiboset. Ed egli disse: Ecco il tuo servitore.

7 E Davide gli disse: Non temere; perciocchè io del tutto userò inverso te benignità, per amor di Gionatan, tuo padre, e ti restituirò tutte le possessioni di Saulle, tuo padre; e, quant’è a te, tu mangerai del continuo alla mia tavola.

8 E Mefiboset s’inchinò, e disse: Che cosa è il tuo servitore, che tu abbia riguardato ad un can morto, qual sono io?

9 Poi il re chiamò Siba, servitore di Saulle, e gli disse: Io ho donato al figliuolo del tuo signore tutto quello che apparteneva a Saulle, ed a tutta la sua casa.

10 Tu adunque, co’ tuoi figliuoli e servitori, lavoragli la terra, e ricogline la rendita; acciocchè il figliuolo del tuo signore abbia di che sostentarsi; ma, quant’è a Mefiboset, figliuolo del tuo signore, egli mangerà del continuo alla mia tavola. Or Siba avea quindici figliuoli e venti servitori.

11 E Siba disse al re: Il tuo servitore farà secondo tutto quello che il re, mio signore, ha comandato al suo servitore. Ma, quant’è a Mefiboset, disse il re, egli mangerà alla mia tavola, come uno de’ figliuoli del re.

12 Or Mefiboset avea un figliuolo piccolo, il cui nome era Mica; e tutti quelli che stavano in casa di Siba erano servitori di Mefiboset.

13 E Mefiboset dimorava in Gerusalemme; perciocchè egli mangiava del continuo alla tavola del re; ed era zoppo de’ due piedi.

1 One day David asked, "Is there anyone left of Saul's family? If there is, I would like to show him kindness for Jonathan's sake."

2 There was a servant of Saul's family named Ziba, and he was told to go to David. "Are you Ziba?" the king asked. "At your service, sir," he answered.

3 The king asked him, "Is there anyone left of Saul's family to whom I can show loyalty and kindness, as I promised God I would?" Ziba answered, "There is still one of Jonathan's sons. He is crippled."

4 "Where is he?" the king asked. "At the home of Machir son of Ammiel in Lodebar," Ziba answered.

5 So King David sent for him.

6 When Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul, arrived, he bowed down before David in respect. David said, "Mephibosheth," and he answered, "At your service, sir."

7 "Don't be afraid," David replied. "I will be kind to you for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will give you back all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always be welcome at my table."

8 Mephibosheth bowed again and said, "I am no better than a dead dog, sir! Why should you be so good to me?"

9 Then the king called Ziba, Saul's servant, and said, "I am giving Mephibosheth, your master's grandson, everything that belonged to Saul and his family.

10 You, your sons, and your servants will farm the land for your master Saul's family and bring in the harvest, to provide food for them. But Mephibosheth himself will always be a guest at my table." (Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)

11 Ziba answered, "I will do everything Your Majesty commands." So Mephibosheth ate at the king's table, just like one of the king's sons.

12 Mephibosheth had a young son named Mica. All the members of Ziba's family became servants of Mephibosheth.

13 So Mephibosheth, who was crippled in both feet, lived in Jerusalem, eating all his meals at the king's table.
