WNT 1 Paul, an Apostle of Christ Jesus, by the will of God, for proclaiming the promise of the Life which is in Christ Jesus: NIV 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, WNT 2 To Timothy my dearly-loved child. May grace, mercy and peace be granted to you from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. NIV 2 To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. WNT 3 I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience--as my forefathers did--that night and day I unceasingly remember you in my prayers, NIV 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. WNT 4 being always mindful of your tears, and longing to see you that I may be filled with joy. NIV 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. WNT 5 For I recall the sincere faith which is in your heart--a faith which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and then in your mother Eunice, and, I am fully convinced, now dwells in you also. NIV 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. WNT 6 For this reason let me remind you to rekindle God's gift which is yours through the laying on of my hands. NIV 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. WNT 7 For the Spirit which God has given us is not a spirit of cowardice, but one of power and of love and of sound judgement. NIV 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. WNT 8 Do not be ashamed then to bear witness for our Lord and for me His prisoner; but rather share suffering with me in the service of the Good News, strengthened by the power of God. NIV 8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. WNT 9 For He saved us and called us with a holy call, not in accordance with our desserts, but in accordance with His own purpose and the free grace which He bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before the commencement of the Ages, NIV 9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, WNT 10 but which has now been plainly revealed through the Appearing of our Saviour, Christ Jesus. He has put an end to death and has brought Life and Immortality to light through the Good News, NIV 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. WNT 11 of which I have been appointed a preacher, Apostle and teacher, to the Gentiles. NIV 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. WNT 12 That indeed is the reason why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know in whom my trust reposes, and I am confident that He has it in His power to keep what I have entrusted to Him safe until that day. NIV 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day. WNT 13 Provide yourself with an outline of the sound teaching which you have heard from my lips, and be true to the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. NIV 13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. WNT 14 That precious treasure which is in your charge, guard through the Holy Spirit who has His home in our hearts. NIV 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. WNT 15 Of this you are aware, that all the Christians in Roman Asia have deserted me: and among them Phygelus and Hermogenes. NIV 15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. WNT 16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus; for many a time he cheered me and he was not ashamed of my chain. NIV 16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. WNT 17 Nay, when he was here in Rome, he took great pains to inquire where I was living, and at last he found me. NIV 17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. WNT 18 (The Lord grant that he may obtain mercy at His hands on that day!) And you yourself well know all the services which he rendered me in Ephesus. NIV 18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.
