2 Peter 3:1-9

NLT 1 This is my second letter to you, dear friends, and in both of them I have tried to stimulate your wholesome thinking and refresh your memory. NIV 1 Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. NLT 2 I want you to remember what the holy prophets said long ago and what our Lord and Savior commanded through your apostles. NIV 2 I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles. NLT 3 Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. NIV 3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. NLT 4 They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.” NIV 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” NLT 5 They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. NIV 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. NLT 6 Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. NIV 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. NLT 7 And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed. NIV 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. NLT 8 But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. NIV 8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. NLT 9 The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. NIV 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
