CEB 1 There was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion in the Italian Company. NRS 1 In Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of the Italian Cohort, as it was called. CEB 2 He and his whole household were pious, Gentile God-worshippers. He gave generously to those in need among the Jewish people and prayed to God constantly. NRS 2 He was a devout man who feared God with all his household; he gave alms generously to the people and prayed constantly to God. CEB 3 One day at nearly three o'clock in the afternoon, he clearly saw an angel from God in a vision. The angel came to him and said, "Cornelius!" NRS 3 One afternoon at about three o'clock he had a vision in which he clearly saw an angel of God coming in and saying to him, "Cornelius." CEB 4 Startled, he stared at the angel and replied, "What is it, Lord?" The angel said, "Your prayers and your compassionate acts are like a memorial offering to God. NRS 4 He stared at him in terror and said, "What is it, Lord?" He answered, "Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. CEB 5 Send messengers to Joppa at once and summon a certain Simon, the one known as Peter. NRS 5 Now send men to Joppa for a certain Simon who is called Peter; CEB 6 He is a guest of Simon the tanner, whose house is near the seacoast." NRS 6 he is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the seaside." CEB 7 When the angel who was speaking to him had gone, Cornelius summoned two of his household servants along with a pious soldier from his personal staff. NRS 7 When the angel who spoke to him had left, he called two of his slaves and a devout soldier from the ranks of those who served him, CEB 8 He explained everything to them, then sent them to Joppa. NRS 8 and after telling them everything, he sent them to Joppa. CEB 9 At noon on the following day, as their journey brought them close to the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. NRS 9 About noon the next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. CEB 10 He became hungry and wanted to eat. While others were preparing the meal, he had a visionary experience. NRS 10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat; and while it was being prepared, he fell into a trance. CEB 11 He saw heaven opened up and something like a large linen sheet being lowered to the earth by its four corners. NRS 11 He saw the heaven opened and something like a large sheet coming down, being lowered to the ground by its four corners. CEB 12 Inside the sheet were all kinds of four-legged animals, reptiles, and wild birds. NRS 12 In it were all kinds of four-footed creatures and reptiles and birds of the air. CEB 13 A voice told him, "Get up, Peter! Kill and eat!" NRS 13 Then he heard a voice saying, "Get up, Peter; kill and eat." CEB 14 Peter exclaimed, "Absolutely not, Lord! I have never eaten anything impure or unclean." NRS 14 But Peter said, "By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is profane or unclean." CEB 15 The voice spoke a second time, "Never consider unclean what God has made pure." NRS 15 The voice said to him again, a second time, "What God has made clean, you must not call profane." CEB 16 This happened three times, then the object was suddenly pulled back into heaven. NRS 16 This happened three times, and the thing was suddenly taken up to heaven. CEB 17 Peter was bewildered about the meaning of the vision. Just then, the messengers sent by Cornelius discovered the whereabouts of Simon's house and arrived at the gate. NRS 17 Now while Peter was greatly puzzled about what to make of the vision that he had seen, suddenly the men sent by Cornelius appeared. They were asking for Simon's house and were standing by the gate. CEB 18 Calling out, they inquired whether the Simon known as Peter was a guest there. NRS 18 They called out to ask whether Simon, who was called Peter, was staying there. CEB 19 While Peter was brooding over the vision, the Spirit interrupted him, "Look! Three people are looking for you. NRS 19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Look, three men are searching for you. CEB 20 Go downstairs. Don't ask questions; just go with them because I have sent them." NRS 20 Now get up, go down, and go with them without hesitation; for I have sent them." CEB 21 So Peter went downstairs and told them, "I'm the one you are looking for. Why have you come?" NRS 21 So Peter went down to the men and said, "I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for your coming?" CEB 22 They replied, "We've come on behalf of Cornelius, a centurion and righteous man, a God-worshipper who is well-respected by all Jewish people. A holy angel directed him to summon you to his house and to hear what you have to say." NRS 22 They answered, "Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear what you have to say." CEB 23 Peter invited them into the house as his guests. The next day he got up and went with them, together with some of the believers from Joppa. NRS 23 So Peter invited them in and gave them lodging. The next day he got up and went with them, and some of the believers from Joppa accompanied him. CEB 24 They arrived in Caesarea the following day. Anticipating their arrival, Cornelius had gathered his relatives and close friends. NRS 24 The following day they came to Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. CEB 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in order to honor him. NRS 25 On Peter's arrival Cornelius met him, and falling at his feet, worshiped him. CEB 26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, "Get up! Like you, I'm just a human." NRS 26 But Peter made him get up, saying, "Stand up; I am only a mortal." CEB 27 As they continued to talk, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. NRS 27 And as he talked with him, he went in and found that many had assembled; CEB 28 He said to them, "You all realize that it is forbidden for a Jew to associate or visit with outsiders. However, God has shown me that I should never call a person impure or unclean. NRS 28 and he said to them, "You yourselves know that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with or to visit a Gentile; but God has shown me that I should not call anyone profane or unclean. CEB 29 For this reason, when you sent for me, I came without objection. I want to know, then, why you sent for me." NRS 29 So when I was sent for, I came without objection. Now may I ask why you sent for me?" CEB 30 Cornelius answered, "Four days ago at this same time, three o'clock in the afternoon, I was praying at home. Suddenly a man in radiant clothing stood before me. NRS 30 Cornelius replied, "Four days ago at this very hour, at three o'clock, I was praying in my house when suddenly a man in dazzling clothes stood before me. CEB 31 He said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayers, and your compassionate acts are like a memorial offering to him. NRS 31 He said, "Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God. CEB 32 Therefore, send someone to Joppa and summon Simon, who is known as Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, located near the seacoast.' NRS 32 Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon, who is called Peter; he is staying in the home of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.' CEB 33 I sent for you right away, and you were kind enough to come. Now, here we are, gathered in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has directed you to say." NRS 33 Therefore I sent for you immediately, and you have been kind enough to come. So now all of us are here in the presence of God to listen to all that the Lord has commanded you to say." CEB 34 Peter said, "I really am learning that God doesn't show partiality to one group of people over another. NRS 34 Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, CEB 35 Rather, in every nation, whoever worships him and does what is right is acceptable to him. NRS 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. CEB 36 This is the message of peace he sent to the Israelites by proclaiming the good news through Jesus Christ: He is Lord of all! NRS 36 You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. CEB 37 You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism John preached. NRS 37 That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: CEB 38 You know about Jesus of Nazareth, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and endowed with power. Jesus traveled around doing good and healing everyone oppressed by the devil because God was with him. NRS 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. CEB 39 We are witnesses of everything he did, both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, NRS 39 We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; CEB 40 but God raised him up on the third day and allowed him to be seen, NRS 40 but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, CEB 41 not by everyone but by us. We are witnesses whom God chose beforehand, who ate and drank with him after God raised him from the dead. NRS 41 not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. CEB 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. NRS 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. CEB 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." NRS 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." CEB 44 While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell on everyone who heard the word. NRS 44 While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. CEB 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. NRS 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, CEB 46 They heard them speaking in other languages and praising God. Peter asked, NRS 46 for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, CEB 47 "These people have received the Holy Spirit just as we have. Surely no one can stop them from being baptized with water, can they?" NRS 47 "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" CEB 48 He directed that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited Peter to stay for several days. NRS 48 So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.
