Deuteronomy 28

GNTA 1 "If you obey the Lord your God and faithfully keep all his commands that I am giving you today, he will make you greater than any other nation on earth. NIV 1 If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. GNTA 2 Obey the Lord your God and all these blessings will be yours: NIV 2 All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God: GNTA 3 "The Lord will bless your towns and your fields. NIV 3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. GNTA 4 "The Lord will bless you with many children, with abundant crops, and with many cattle and sheep. NIV 4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. GNTA 5 "The Lord will bless your grain crops and the food you prepare from them. NIV 5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. GNTA 6 "The Lord will bless everything you do. NIV 6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. GNTA 7 "The Lord will defeat your enemies when they attack you. They will attack from one direction, but they will run from you in all directions. NIV 7 The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. GNTA 8 "The Lord your God will bless your work and fill your barns with grain. He will bless you in the land that he is giving you. NIV 8 The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you. GNTA 9 "If you obey the Lord your God and do everything he commands, he will make you his own people, as he has promised. NIV 9 The LORD will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the LORD your God and walk in obedience to him. GNTA 10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that the Lord has chosen you to be his own people, and they will be afraid of you. NIV 10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will fear you. GNTA 11 The Lord will give you many children, many cattle, and abundant crops in the land that he promised your ancestors to give you. NIV 11 The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you. GNTA 12 He will send rain in season from his rich storehouse in the sky and bless all your work, so that you will lend to many nations, but you will not have to borrow from any. NIV 12 The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. GNTA 13 The Lord your God will make you the leader among the nations and not a follower; you will always prosper and never fail if you obey faithfully all his commands that I am giving you today. NIV 13 The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. GNTA 14 But you must never disobey them in any way, or worship and serve other gods. NIV 14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them. GNTA 15 "But if you disobey the Lord your God and do not faithfully keep all his commands and laws that I am giving you today, all these evil things will happen to you: NIV 15 However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you: GNTA 16 "The Lord will curse your towns and your fields. NIV 16 You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country. GNTA 17 "The Lord will curse your grain crops and the food you prepare from them. NIV 17 Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. GNTA 18 "The Lord will curse you by giving you only a few children, poor crops, and few cattle and sheep. NIV 18 The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. GNTA 19 "The Lord will curse everything you do. NIV 19 You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out. GNTA 20 "If you do evil and reject the Lord, he will bring on you disaster, confusion, and trouble in everything you do, until you are quickly and completely destroyed. NIV 20 The LORD will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him. GNTA 21 He will send disease after disease on you until there is not one of you left in the land that you are about to occupy. NIV 21 The LORD will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess. GNTA 22 The Lord will strike you with infectious diseases, with swelling and fever; he will send drought and scorching winds to destroy your crops. These disasters will be with you until you die. NIV 22 The LORD will strike you with wasting disease, with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, with blight and mildew, which will plague you until you perish. GNTA 23 No rain will fall, and your ground will become as hard as iron. NIV 23 The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron. GNTA 24 Instead of rain, the Lord will send down duststorms and sandstorms until you are destroyed. NIV 24 The LORD will turn the rain of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed. GNTA 25 "The Lord will give your enemies victory over you. You will attack them from one direction, but you will run from them in all directions, and all the people on earth will be terrified when they see what happens to you. NIV 25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven, and you will become a thing of horror to all the kingdoms on earth. GNTA 26 When you die, birds and wild animals will come and eat your bodies, and there will be no one to scare them off. NIV 26 Your carcasses will be food for all the birds and the wild animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away. GNTA 27 The Lord will send boils on you, as he did on the Egyptians. He will make your bodies break out with sores. You will be covered with scabs, and you will itch, but there will be no cure. NIV 27 The LORD will afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors, festering sores and the itch, from which you cannot be cured. GNTA 28 The Lord will make you lose your mind; he will strike you with blindness and confusion. NIV 28 The LORD will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind. GNTA 29 You will grope about in broad daylight like someone blind, and you will not be able to find your way. You will not prosper in anything you do. You will be constantly oppressed and robbed, and there will be no one to help you. NIV 29 At midday you will grope about like a blind person in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day you will be oppressed and robbed, with no one to rescue you. GNTA 30 "You will be engaged to a young woman - but someone else will marry her. You will build a house - but never live in it. You will plant a vineyard - but never eat its grapes. NIV 30 You will be pledged to be married to a woman, but another will take her and rape her. You will build a house, but you will not live in it. You will plant a vineyard, but you will not even begin to enjoy its fruit. GNTA 31 Your cattle will be butchered before your very eyes, but you will not eat any of the meat. Your donkeys will be dragged away while you look on, and they will not be given back to you. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and there will be no one to help you. NIV 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will eat none of it. Your donkey will be forcibly taken from you and will not be returned. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and no one will rescue them. GNTA 32 Your sons and daughters will be given as slaves to foreigners while you look on. Every day you will strain your eyes, looking in vain for your children to return. NIV 32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation, and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand. GNTA 33 A foreign nation will take all the crops that you have worked so hard to grow, while you receive nothing but constant oppression and harsh treatment. NIV 33 A people that you do not know will eat what your land and labor produce, and you will have nothing but cruel oppression all your days. GNTA 34 Your sufferings will make you lose your mind. NIV 34 The sights you see will drive you mad. GNTA 35 The Lord will cover your legs with incurable, painful sores; boils will cover you from head to foot. NIV 35 The LORD will afflict your knees and legs with painful boils that cannot be cured, spreading from the soles of your feet to the top of your head. GNTA 36 "The Lord will take you and your king away to a foreign land, where neither you nor your ancestors ever lived before; there you will serve gods made of wood and stone. NIV 36 The LORD will drive you and the king you set over you to a nation unknown to you or your ancestors. There you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone. GNTA 37 In the countries to which the Lord will scatter you, the people will be shocked at what has happened to you; they will make fun of you and ridicule you. NIV 37 You will become a thing of horror, a byword and an object of ridicule among all the peoples where the LORD will drive you. GNTA 38 "You will plant plenty of seed, but reap only a small harvest, because the locusts will eat your crops. NIV 38 You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little, because locusts will devour it. GNTA 39 You will plant vineyards and take care of them, but you will not gather their grapes or drink wine from them, because worms will eat the vines. NIV 39 You will plant vineyards and cultivate them but you will not drink the wine or gather the grapes, because worms will eat them. GNTA 40 Olive trees will grow everywhere in your land, but you will not have any olive oil, because the olives will drop off. NIV 40 You will have olive trees throughout your country but you will not use the oil, because the olives will drop off. GNTA 41 You will have sons and daughters, but you will lose them, because they will be taken away as prisoners of war. NIV 41 You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity. GNTA 42 All your trees and crops will be devoured by insects. NIV 42 Swarms of locusts will take over all your trees and the crops of your land. GNTA 43 "Foreigners who live in your land will gain more and more power, while you gradually lose yours. NIV 43 The foreigners who reside among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower. GNTA 44 They will have money to lend you, but you will have none to lend them. In the end they will be your rulers. NIV 44 They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them. They will be the head, but you will be the tail. GNTA 45 "All these disasters will come on you, and they will be with you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the Lord your God and keep all the laws that he gave you. NIV 45 All these curses will come on you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the LORD your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. GNTA 46 They will be the evidence of God's judgment on you and your descendants forever. NIV 46 They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever. GNTA 47 The Lord blessed you in every way, but you would not serve him with glad and joyful hearts. NIV 47 Because you did not serve the LORD your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity, GNTA 48 So then, you will serve the enemies that the Lord is going to send against you. You will be hungry, thirsty, and naked - in need of everything. The Lord will oppress you harshly until you are destroyed. NIV 48 therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the LORD sends against you. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you. GNTA 49 The Lord will bring against you a nation from the ends of the earth, a nation whose language you do not know. They will swoop down on you like an eagle. NIV 49 The LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the ends of the earth, like an eagle swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand, GNTA 50 They will be ruthless and show no mercy to anyone, young or old. NIV 50 a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old or pity for the young. GNTA 51 They will eat your livestock and your crops, and you will starve to death. They will not leave you any grain, wine, olive oil, cattle, or sheep; and you will die. NIV 51 They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine or olive oil, nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined. GNTA 52 They will attack every town in the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and the high, fortified walls in which you trust will fall. NIV 52 They will lay siege to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the LORD your God is giving you. GNTA 53 "When your enemies are besieging your towns, you will become so desperate for food that you will even eat the children that the Lord your God has given you. NIV 53 Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the LORD your God has given you. GNTA 54 Even the most refined man of noble birth will become so desperate during the siege that he will eat some of his own children because he has no other food. He will not even give any to his brother or to the wife he loves or to any of his children who are left. NIV 54 Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, GNTA 56 Even the most refined woman of noble birth, so rich that she has never had to walk anywhere, will behave in the same way. When the enemy besieges her town, she will become so desperate for food that she will secretly eat her newborn child and the afterbirth as well. She will not share them with the husband she loves or with any of her children. NIV 56 The most gentle and sensitive woman among you—so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot—will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter GNTA 58 "If you do not obey faithfully all of God's teachings that are written in this book and if you do not honor the wonderful and awesome name of the Lord your God, NIV 58 If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law, which are written in this book, and do not revere this glorious and awesome name—the LORD your God— GNTA 59 he will send on you and on your descendants incurable diseases and horrible epidemics that can never be stopped. NIV 59 the LORD will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. GNTA 60 He will bring on you once again all the dreadful diseases you experienced in Egypt, and you will never recover. NIV 60 He will bring on you all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. GNTA 61 He will also send all kinds of diseases and epidemics that are not mentioned in this book of God's laws and teachings, and you will be destroyed. NIV 61 The LORD will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law, until you are destroyed. GNTA 62 Although you become as numerous as the stars in the sky, only a few of you will survive, because you did not obey the Lord your God. NIV 62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky will be left but few in number, because you did not obey the LORD your God. GNTA 63 Just as the Lord took delight in making you prosper and in making you increase in number, so he will take delight in destroying you and in bringing ruin on you. You will be uprooted from the land that you are about to occupy. NIV 63 Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please him to ruin and destroy you. You will be uprooted from the land you are entering to possess. GNTA 64 "The Lord will scatter you among all the nations, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you will serve gods made of wood and stone, gods that neither you nor your ancestors have ever worshiped before. NIV 64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known. GNTA 65 You will find no peace anywhere, no place to call your own; the Lord will overwhelm you with anxiety, hopelessness, and despair. NIV 65 Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart. GNTA 66 Your life will always be in danger. Day and night you will be filled with terror, and you will live in constant fear of death. NIV 66 You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. GNTA 67 Your hearts will pound with fear at everything you see. Every morning you will wish for evening; every evening you will wish for morning. NIV 67 In the morning you will say, “If only it were evening!” and in the evening, “If only it were morning!”—because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see. GNTA 68 The Lord will send you back to Egypt in ships, even though he said that you would never have to go there again. There you will try to sell yourselves to your enemies as slaves, but no one will want to buy you." NIV 68 The LORD will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again. There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.
