Ecclesiastes 11

JUB 1 Cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it after many days. NIV 1 Ship your grain across the sea; after many days you may receive a return. JUB 2 Give a portion to seven and even to eight, for thou dost not know what evil shall come upon the earth. NIV 2 Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land. JUB 3 If the clouds are full of rain, they shall empty themselves upon the earth; and if the tree falls toward the south or toward the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it shall remain. NIV 3 If clouds are full of water, they pour rain on the earth. Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there it will lie. JUB 4 He that observes the wind shall not sow, and he that regards the clouds shall not reap. NIV 4 Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. JUB 5 As thou dost not know what is the way of the spirit nor how the bones grow in the womb of her that is with child, even so thou dost not know the works of God who makes all. NIV 5 As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things. JUB 6 In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand; for thou knowest not which shall prosper, either this or that or whether they both shall be equally good. NIV 6 Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well. JUB 7 Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun, NIV 7 Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun. JUB 8 but if a man lives many years and rejoices in them all; yet if afterwards he remembers the days of darkness, for they shall be many, he shall say that everything that shall have happened to him is vanity. NIV 8 However many years anyone may live, let them enjoy them all. But let them remember the days of darkness, for there will be many. Everything to come is meaningless. JUB 9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thine heart and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. NIV 9 You who are young, be happy while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment. JUB 10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart and put away evil from thy flesh; for childhood and youth are vanity. NIV 10 So then, banish anxiety from your heart and cast off the troubles of your body, for youth and vigor are meaningless.
