Ephesians 2

CEB 1 At one time you were like a dead person because of the things you did wrong and your offenses against God. NRS 1 You were dead through the trespasses and sins CEB 2 You used to live like people of this world. You followed the rule of a destructive spiritual power. This is the spirit of disobedience to God's will that is now at work in persons whose lives are characterized by disobedience. NRS 2 in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. CEB 3 At one time you were like those persons. All of you used to do whatever felt good and whatever you thought you wanted so that you were children headed for punishment just like everyone else. NRS 3 All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. CEB 4 - NRS 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us CEB 5 However, God is rich in mercy. He brought us to life with Christ while we were dead as a result of those things that we did wrong. He did this because of the great love that he has for us. You are saved by God's grace! NRS 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ —by grace you have been saved— CEB 6 And God raised us up and seated us in the heavens with Christ Jesus. NRS 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, CEB 7 God did this to show future generations the greatness of his grace by the goodness that God has shown us in Christ Jesus. NRS 7 so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. CEB 8 You are saved by God's grace because of your faith. This salvation is God's gift. It's not something you possessed. NRS 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— CEB 9 It's not something you did that you can be proud of. NRS 9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast. CEB 10 Instead, we are God's accomplishment, created in Christ Jesus to do good things. God planned for these good things to be the way that we live our lives. NRS 10 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. CEB 11 So remember that once you were Gentiles by physical descent, who were called "uncircumcised" by Jews who are physically circumcised. NRS 11 So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called "the uncircumcision" by those who are called "the circumcision"—a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands— CEB 12 At that time you were without Christ. You were aliens rather than citizens of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of God's promise. In this world you had no hope and no God. NRS 12 remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. CEB 13 But now, thanks to Christ Jesus, you who once were so far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. NRS 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. CEB 14 Christ is our peace. He made both Jews and Gentiles into one group. With his body, he broke down the barrier of hatred that divided us. NRS 14 For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. CEB 15 He canceled the detailed rules of the Law so that he could create one new person out of the two groups, making peace. NRS 15 He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, CEB 16 He reconciled them both as one body to God by the cross, which ended the hostility to God. NRS 16 and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. CEB 17 When he came, he announced the good news of peace to you who were far away from God and to those who were near. NRS 17 So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; CEB 18 We both have access to the Father through Christ by the one Spirit. NRS 18 for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. CEB 19 So now you are no longer strangers and aliens. Rather, you are fellow citizens with God's people, and you belong to God's household. NRS 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, CEB 20 As God's household, you are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. NRS 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. CEB 21 The whole building is joined together in him, and it grows up into a temple that is dedicated to the Lord. NRS 21 In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; CEB 22 Christ is building you into a place where God lives through the Spirit. NRS 22 in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.
