4 Sino que vuelve a mi tierra natal, donde están mis parientes, y encuentra allí una esposa para mi hijo Isaac.

5 El siervo preguntó:<br />—¿Pero qué pasaría si no puedo encontrar una joven que esté dispuesta a viajar tan lejos de su casa? ¿Debería, entonces, llevar allí a Isaac para que viva entre sus parientes, en la tierra de donde usted proviene?

6 —¡No! —contestó Abraham—. Procura no llevar nunca a mi hijo allí.

7 Pues el Señor<br />, Dios del cielo, quien me sacó de la casa de mi padre y de mi tierra natal, prometió solemnemente dar esta tierra a mis descendientes.<br /> Él enviará a su ángel delante de ti y se encargará de que encuentres allí una esposa para mi hijo.

8 Si ella no está dispuesta a regresar contigo, entonces quedarás libre de este juramento que haces conmigo; pero bajo ninguna circunstancia, llevarás a mi hijo allí.

9 Entonces el siervo hizo un juramento poniendo su mano debajo del muslo de su señor, Abraham, y juró seguir sus instrucciones.

10 Después tomó diez de los camellos de Abraham y los cargó con toda clase de regalos valiosos de parte de su señor, y viajó hasta la lejana tierra de Aram-naharaim. Una vez allí, se dirigió a la ciudad donde se había establecido Nacor, hermano de Abraham.

11 Hizo que los camellos se arrodillaran junto a un pozo justo a las afueras de la ciudad. Era la caída de la tarde, y las mujeres salían a sacar agua.

12 «Oh Señor<br />, Dios de mi amo, Abraham —oró—. Te ruego que hoy me des éxito y muestres amor inagotable a mi amo, Abraham.

13 Aquí me encuentro junto a este manantial, y las jóvenes de la ciudad vienen a sacar agua.

14 Mi petición es la siguiente: yo le diré a una de ellas: “Por favor, deme de beber de su cántaro”; si ella dice: “Sí, beba usted, ¡y también daré de beber a sus camellos!”, que sea ella la que has elegido como esposa para Isaac. De esa forma sabré que has mostrado amor inagotable a mi amo».

15 Entonces, antes de terminar su oración, vio a una joven llamada Rebeca, que salía con su cántaro al hombro. Ella era hija de Betuel, quien era hijo de Nacor —hermano de Abraham— y de Milca, su esposa.

16 Rebeca era muy hermosa y tenía edad suficiente para estar casada, pero aún era virgen. Ella descendió hasta el manantial, llenó su cántaro y volvió a subir.

17 Entonces el siervo corrió hasta alcanzarla y le dijo:<br />—Por favor, deme de beber un poco de agua de su cántaro.

18 —Sí, mi señor, beba —respondió ella.<br />Enseguida bajó su cántaro del hombro y le dio de beber.

19 Después de darle de beber, dijo:<br />—También sacaré agua para sus camellos y les daré de beber hasta que se sacien.

20 Así que, de inmediato, vació su cántaro en el bebedero y volvió corriendo al pozo a sacar agua para todos los camellos.

21 El siervo la observaba en silencio mientras se preguntaba si el Señor<br /> le había dado éxito en la misión.

22 Cuando los camellos terminaron de beber, sacó un anillo de oro para la nariz de la muchacha y dos pulseras grandes de oro<br /> para sus muñecas.

23 —¿De quién es hija usted? —le preguntó—, y dígame, por favor, ¿tendría su padre algún lugar para hospedarnos esta noche?

24 —Soy hija de Betuel —contestó ella—, y mis abuelos son Nacor y Milca.

25 Sí, tenemos más que suficiente paja y alimento para los camellos, y también tenemos lugar para huéspedes.

26 El hombre se inclinó hasta el suelo y adoró al Señor<br />.

27 —Alabado sea el Señor<br />, Dios de mi amo, Abraham —dijo—. El Señor<br /> ha mostrado amor inagotable y fidelidad a mi amo, porque me ha guiado directamente a los parientes de mi señor.

28 La joven corrió a su casa para contarle a su familia todo lo que había ocurrido.

29 Rebeca tenía un hermano llamado Labán, el cual salió corriendo al manantial para encontrarse con el hombre.

30 Había visto el anillo en la nariz de su hermana y las pulseras en sus muñecas, y había oído a Rebeca contar lo que el hombre le había dicho. Así que corrió hasta llegar al manantial, donde el hombre aún estaba parado al lado de sus camellos.

31 Entonces Labán le dijo: «¡Ven y quédate con nosotros, hombre bendecido por el Señor<br />! ¿Por qué estás aquí, fuera de la ciudad, cuando yo tengo un cuarto preparado para ti y un lugar para los camellos?».

32 Entonces el hombre fue con Labán a su casa, y Labán descargó los camellos, y para que se tendieran les proveyó paja, los alimentó, y también trajo agua para que el hombre y los camelleros se lavaran los pies.

33 Luego sirvieron la comida, pero el siervo de Abraham dijo:<br />—No quiero comer hasta que les haya dicho la razón por la que vine.<br />—Muy bien —respondió Labán—, dinos.

34 —Yo soy siervo de Abraham —explicó—.

35 Y el Señor<br /> ha bendecido mucho a mi amo; y él se ha enriquecido. El Señor<br /> le ha dado rebaños de ovejas y cabras, manadas de ganado, una fortuna en plata y en oro, y muchos siervos y siervas, camellos y burros.

36 »Cuando Sara, la esposa de mi amo, era ya muy anciana, le dio un hijo a mi amo, y mi amo le ha dado a él todo lo que posee.

37 Mi amo me hizo jurar, y me dijo: “No dejes que mi hijo se case con una de esas mujeres cananeas.

38 Sino que vuelve a la casa de mi padre, a mis parientes, y encuentra allí una esposa para mi hijo”.

39 »Pero yo le dije a mi amo: “¿Y si no encuentro una joven que esté dispuesta a regresar conmigo?”.

40 Y él contestó: “El Señor<br />, en cuya presencia he vivido, enviará a su ángel contigo y hará que tu misión tenga éxito. Es verdad, debes encontrar una esposa para mi hijo entre mis parientes, en la familia de mi padre.

41 Entonces habrás cumplido tu obligación; pero si vas a mis parientes y ellos se niegan a dejarla ir contigo, quedarás libre de mi juramento”.

42 »Así que cuando llegué al manantial, hice esta oración: “Oh Señor<br />, Dios de mi amo, Abraham, te ruego que me des éxito en esta misión.

43 Mira, aquí estoy, parado junto a este manantial, y esta es mi petición: cuando venga una joven a sacar agua, yo le diré: ‘Por favor, deme de beber un poco de agua de su cántaro’;

44 si ella dice: ‘Sí, beba usted, y también sacaré agua para sus camellos’, que sea ella la que has elegido para ser la esposa del hijo de mi amo”.

45 »Antes de terminar de orar en mi corazón, vi a Rebeca saliendo con un cántaro de agua al hombro. Ella descendió hasta el manantial y sacó agua. Entonces yo le dije: “Por favor, deme de beber”.

46 Enseguida ella bajó el cántaro del hombro y dijo: “Sí, beba usted, ¡y también daré de beber a sus camellos!”. Así que bebí, y después ella dio de beber a los camellos.

50 Entonces Betuel y Labán respondieron:<br />—Es evidente que el Señor<br /> te trajo hasta aquí, así que no hay nada que podamos decir.

51 Aquí está Rebeca; tómala y vete. Efectivamente, que ella sea la esposa del hijo de tu amo, tal como el Señor<br /> lo ha dispuesto.

52 Cuando el siervo de Abraham oyó la respuesta, se postró hasta el suelo y adoró al Señor<br />.

53 Después sacó joyas de plata y de oro, y vestidos, y se los dio a Rebeca. También entregó valiosos regalos a su hermano y a su madre.

54 Luego comieron, y el siervo y los hombres que lo acompañaban pasaron allí la noche.<br />Pero temprano a la mañana siguiente, el siervo de Abraham dijo:<br />—Envíenme de regreso a mi amo.

55 —Queremos que Rebeca se quede con nosotros al menos diez días —dijeron su madre y su hermano—, y luego podrá irse.

56 Pero él dijo:<br />—No me retrasen. El Señor<br /> hizo que mi misión tuviera éxito; ahora envíenme, para que pueda regresar a la casa de mi amo.

57 —Bien —dijeron ellos—, llamaremos a Rebeca y le preguntaremos qué le parece a ella.

58 Entonces llamaron a Rebeca.<br />—¿Estás dispuesta a irte con este hombre? —le preguntaron.<br />—Sí —contestó—, iré.

59 Entonces se despidieron de Rebeca y la enviaron con el siervo de Abraham y sus hombres. La mujer que había sido niñera de Rebeca la acompañó.

60 Cuando Rebeca partía le dieron la siguiente bendición:<br />«Hermana nuestra, ¡que llegues a ser<br />la madre de muchos millones!<br />Que tus descendientes sean fuertes<br />y conquisten las ciudades de sus enemigos».

61 Después Rebeca y sus siervas montaron en los camellos y siguieron al hombre. Así que el siervo de Abraham se llevó a Rebeca y emprendió el viaje.

62 Mientras tanto, Isaac, que vivía en el Neguev, había regresado de Beer-lajai-roi.

63 Una tarde, mientras caminaba por los campos y meditaba, levantó la vista y vio que se acercaban los camellos.

64 Cuando Rebeca levantó la vista y vio a Isaac, se bajó enseguida del camello.

65 —¿Quién es ese hombre que viene a nuestro encuentro caminando por los campos? —preguntó al siervo.<br />Y él contestó:<br />—Es mi amo.<br />Entonces Rebeca se cubrió el rostro con el velo,

66 y el siervo le contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho.

67 Luego Isaac la llevó a la carpa de Sara, su madre, y Rebeca fue su esposa. Él la amó profundamente, y ella fue para él un consuelo especial después de la muerte de su madre.

1 Abraham was now very old, and the LORD had blessed him in every way.

2 He said to the senior servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh.

3 I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living,

4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.”

5 The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?”

6 “Make sure that you do not take my son back there,” Abraham said.

7 “The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there.

8 If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”

9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.

10 Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels loaded with all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim and made his way to the town of Nahor.

11 He had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.

12 Then he prayed, “LORD, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.

13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.

14 May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”

15 Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.

16 The woman was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.

17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.”

18 “Drink, my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.

19 After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink.”

20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels.

21 Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the LORD had made his journey successful.

22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels.

23 Then he asked, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”

24 She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.”

25 And she added, “We have plenty of straw and fodder, as well as room for you to spend the night.”

26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD,

27 saying, “Praise be to the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.”

28 The young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things.

29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he hurried out to the man at the spring.

30 As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring.

31 “Come, you who are blessed by the LORD,” he said. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”

32 So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet.

33 Then food was set before him, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say.” “Then tell us,” Laban said.

34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.

35 The LORD has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.

36 My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age, and he has given him everything he owns.

37 And my master made me swear an oath, and said, ‘You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,

38 but go to my father’s family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.’

39 “Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’

40 “He replied, ‘The LORD, before whom I have walked faithfully, will send his angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father’s family.

41 You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you—then you will be released from my oath.’

42 “When I came to the spring today, I said, ‘LORD, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success to the journey on which I have come.

43 See, I am standing beside this spring. If a young woman comes out to draw water and I say to her, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,”

44 and if she says to me, “Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels too,” let her be the one the LORD has chosen for my master’s son.’

45 “Before I finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’

46 “She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.’ So I drank, and she watered the camels also.

47 “I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ “She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milkah bore to him.’ “Then I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms,

48 and I bowed down and worshiped the LORD. I praised the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.

49 Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.”

50 Laban and Bethuel answered, “This is from the LORD; we can say nothing to you one way or the other.

51 Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the LORD has directed.”

52 When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the LORD.

53 Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts to her brother and to her mother.

54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there. When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way to my master.”

55 But her brother and her mother replied, “Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so; then you may go.”

56 But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the LORD has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master.”

57 Then they said, “Let’s call the young woman and ask her about it.”

58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?” “I will go,” she said.

59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men.

60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “Our sister, may you increase to thousands upon thousands; may your offspring possess the cities of their enemies.”

61 Then Rebekah and her attendants got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.

62 Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev.

63 He went out to the field one evening to meditate, and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching.

64 Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel

65 and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?” “He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself.

66 Then the servant told Isaac all he had done.

67 Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
