Genesis 49

LXX 1 And Jacob called his sons, and said to them, NIV 1 Then Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come. LXX 2 Assemble yourselves, that I may tell you what shall happen to you in the last days. Gather yourselves together, and hear me, sons of Jacob; hear Israel, hear your father. NIV 2 “Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob; listen to your father Israel. LXX 3 Ruben, thou my first-born, thou my strength, and the first of my children, hard to be endured, self-willed. NIV 3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first sign of my strength, excelling in honor, excelling in power. LXX 4 Thou wast insolent like water, burst not forth with violence, for thou wentest up to the bed of thy father; then thou defiledst the couch, whereupon thou wentest up. NIV 4 Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel, for you went up onto your father’s bed, onto my couch and defiled it. LXX 5 Symeon and Levi, brethren, accomplished the injustice of their cutting off. NIV 5 “Simeon and Levi are brothers— their swords are weapons of violence. LXX 6 Let not my soul come into their counsel, and let not mine inward parts contend in their conspiracy, for in their wrath they slew men, and in their passion they houghed a bull. NIV 6 Let me not enter their council, let me not join their assembly, for they have killed men in their anger and hamstrung oxen as they pleased. LXX 7 Cursed be their wrath, for it was willful, and their anger, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. NIV 7 Cursed be their anger, so fierce, and their fury, so cruel! I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel. LXX 8 Juda, thy brethren have praised thee, and thy hands shall be on the back of thine enemies; thy father's sons shall do thee reverence. NIV 8 “Judah, your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s sons will bow down to you. LXX 9 Juda is a lion's whelp: from the tender plant, my son, thou art gone up, having couched thou liest as a lion, and as a whelp; who shall stir him up? NIV 9 You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? LXX 10 A ruler shall not fail from Juda, nor a prince from his loins, until there come the things stored up for him; and he is the expectation of nations. NIV 10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his. LXX 11 Binding his foal to the vine, and the foal of his ass to the branch , he shall wash his robe in wine, and his garment in the blood of the grape. NIV 11 He will tether his donkey to a vine, his colt to the choicest branch; he will wash his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes. LXX 12 His eyes shall be more cheering than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk. NIV 12 His eyes will be darker than wine, his teeth whiter than milk. LXX 13 Zabulon shall dwell on the coast, and he by a haven of ships, and shall extend to Sidon. NIV 13 “Zebulun will live by the seashore and become a haven for ships; his border will extend toward Sidon. LXX 14 Issachar has desired that which is good; resting between the inheritances. NIV 14 “Issachar is a rawboned donkey lying down among the sheep pens. LXX 15 And having seen the resting place that it was good, and the land that it was fertile, he subjected his shoulder to labour, and became a husbandman. NIV 15 When he sees how good is his resting place and how pleasant is his land, he will bend his shoulder to the burden and submit to forced labor. LXX 16 Dan shall judge his people, as one tribe too in Israel. NIV 16 “Dan will provide justice for his people as one of the tribes of Israel. LXX 17 And let Dan be a serpent in the way, besetting the path, biting the heel of the horse (and the rider shall fall backward), NIV 17 Dan will be a snake by the roadside, a viper along the path, that bites the horse’s heels so that its rider tumbles backward. LXX 18 waiting for the salvation of the Lord. NIV 18 “I look for your deliverance, LORD. LXX 19 Gad, a plundering troop shall plunder him; but he shall plunder him, closely. NIV 19 “Gad will be attacked by a band of raiders, but he will attack them at their heels. LXX 20 Aser, his bread fat; and he shall yield dainties to princes. NIV 20 “Asher’s food will be rich; he will provide delicacies fit for a king. LXX 21 Nephthalim is a spreading stem, bestowing beauty on its fruit. NIV 21 “Naphtali is a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns. LXX 22 Joseph is a son increased; my dearly loved son is increased; my youngest son, turn to me. NIV 22 “Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine near a spring, whose branches climb over a wall. LXX 23 Against whom men taking evil counsel reproached , and the archers pressed hard upon him. NIV 23 With bitterness archers attacked him; they shot at him with hostility. LXX 24 But their bow and arrows were mightily consumed, and the sinews of their arms were slackened by the hand of the mighty one of Jacob; thence is he that strengthened Israel from the God of thy father; NIV 24 But his bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, LXX 25 and my God helped thee, and he blessed thee with the blessing of heaven from above, and the blessing of the earth possessing all things, because of the blessing of the breasts and of the womb, NIV 25 because of your father’s God, who helps you, because of the Almighty, who blesses you with blessings of the skies above, blessings of the deep springs below, blessings of the breast and womb. LXX 26 the blessings of thy father and thy mother—it has prevailed above the blessing of the lasting mountains, and beyond the blessings of the everlasting hills; they shall be upon the head of Joseph, and upon the head of the brothers of whom he took the lead. NIV 26 Your father’s blessings are greater than the blessings of the ancient mountains, than the bounty of the age-old hills. Let all these rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince among his brothers. LXX 27 Benjamin, as a ravening wolf, shall eat still in the morning, and at evening he gives food. NIV 27 “Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning he devours the prey, in the evening he divides the plunder.” LXX 28 All these the twelve sons of Jacob; and their father spoke these words to them, and he blessed them; he blessed each of them according to his blessing. NIV 28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing appropriate to him. LXX 29 And he said to them, I am added to my people; ye shall bury me with my fathers in the cave, which is in the field of Ephron the Chettite, NIV 29 Then he gave them these instructions: “I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite, LXX 30 in the double cave which is opposite Mambre, in the land of Chanaan, the cave which Abraam bought of Ephron the Chettite, for a possession of a sepulchre. NIV 30 the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite. LXX 31 There they buried Abraam and Sarrha his wife; there they buried Isaac, and Rebecca his wife; there they buried Lea; NIV 31 There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and there I buried Leah. LXX 32 in the portion of the field, and of the cave that was in it, of the sons of Chet. NIV 32 The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites. ” LXX 33 And Jacob ceased giving charges to his sons; and having lifted up his feet on the bed, he died, and was gathered to his people. NIV 33 When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.
