Hebrews 10

ESV 1 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. MSG 1 The old plan was only a hint of the good things in the new plan. Since that old "law plan" wasn't complete in itself, it couldn't complete those who followed it. No matter how many sacrifices were offered year after year, they never added up to a complete solution. ESV 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? MSG 2 If they had, the worshipers would have gone merrily on their way, no longer dragged down by their sins. ESV 3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. MSG 3 But instead of removing awareness of sin, when those animal sacrifices were repeated over and over they actually heightened awareness and guilt. ESV 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. MSG 4 The plain fact is that bull and goat blood can't get rid of sin. ESV 5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, "Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; MSG 5 That is what is meant by this prophecy, put in the mouth of Christ: You don't want sacrifices and offerings year after year; you've prepared a body for me for a sacrifice. ESV 6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. MSG 6 It's not fragrance and smoke from the altar that whet your appetite. ESV 7 Then I said, 'Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.'" MSG 7 So I said, "I'm here to do it your way, O God, the way it's described in your Book." ESV 8 When he said above, "You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings" (these are offered according to the law), MSG 8 When he said, "You don't want sacrifices and offerings," he was referring to practices according to the old plan. ESV 9 then he added, "Behold, I have come to do your will." He does away with the first in order to establish the second. MSG 9 When he added, "I'm here to do it your way," he set aside the first in order to enact the new plan - ESV 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. MSG 10 God's way - by which we are made fit for God by the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus. ESV 11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. MSG 11 Every priest goes to work at the altar each day, offers the same old sacrifices year in, year out, and never makes a dent in the sin problem. ESV 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, MSG 12 As a priest, Christ made a single sacrifice for sins, and that was it! Then he sat down right beside God ESV 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. MSG 13 and waited for his enemies to cave in. ESV 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. MSG 14 It was a perfect sacrifice by a perfect person to perfect some very imperfect people. By that single offering, he did everything that needed to be done for everyone who takes part in the purifying process. ESV 15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, MSG 15 The Holy Spirit confirms this: ESV 16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds," MSG 16 This new plan I'm making with Israel isn't going to be written on paper, isn't going to be chiseled in stone; This time "I'm writing out the plan in them, carving it on the lining of their hearts." ESV 17 then he adds, "I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more." MSG 17 He concludes, I'll forever wipe the slate clean of their sins. ESV 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. MSG 18 Once sins are taken care of for good, there's no longer any need to offer sacrifices for them. ESV 19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, MSG 19 So, friends, we can now - without hesitation - walk right up to God, into "the Holy Place." ESV 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, MSG 20 Jesus has cleared the way by the blood of his sacrifice, acting as our priest before God. ESV 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, MSG 21 The "curtain" into God's presence is his body. ESV 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. MSG 22 So let's do it - full of belief, confident that we're presentable inside and out. ESV 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. MSG 23 Let's keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word. ESV 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, MSG 24 Let's see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, ESV 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. MSG 25 not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching. ESV 26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, MSG 26 If we give up and turn our backs on all we've learned, all we've been given, all the truth we now know, we repudiate Christ's sacrifice ESV 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. MSG 27 and are left on our own to face the Judgment - and a mighty fierce judgment it will be! ESV 28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. MSG 28 If the penalty for breaking the law of Moses is physical death, ESV 29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has spurned the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? MSG 29 what do you think will happen if you turn on God's Son, spit on the sacrifice that made you whole, and insult this most gracious Spirit? ESV 30 For we know him who said, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay." And again, "The Lord will judge his people." MSG 30 This is no light matter. God has warned us that he'll hold us to account and make us pay. He was quite explicit: "Vengeance is mine, and I won't overlook a thing," and, "God will judge his people." ESV 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. MSG 31 Nobody's getting by with anything, believe me. ESV 32 But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, MSG 32 Remember those early days after you first saw the light? Those were the hard times! ESV 33 sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. MSG 33 Kicked around in public, targets of every kind of abuse - some days it was you, other days your friends. ESV 34 For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. MSG 34 If some friends went to prison, you stuck by them. If some enemies broke in and seized your goods, you let them go with a smile, knowing they couldn't touch your real treasure. Nothing they did bothered you, nothing set you back. ESV 35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. MSG 35 So don't throw it all away now. You were sure of yourselves then. It's still a sure thing! ESV 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. MSG 36 But you need to stick it out, staying with God's plan so you'll be there for the promised completion. ESV 37 For, "Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; MSG 37 It won't be long now, he's on the way; he'll show up most any minute. ESV 38 but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him." MSG 38 But anyone who is right with me thrives on loyal trust; if he cuts and runs, I won't be very happy. ESV 39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. MSG 39 But we're not quitters who lose out. Oh, no! We'll stay with it and survive, trusting all the way.
