Hosea 2

CEB 1 Say to your brother, My People, and to your sister, Compassion: NRS 1 Say to your brother, Ammi, and to your sister, Ruhamah. CEB 2 Level a charge against your mother; plead with her! She is not my wife, and I am not her husband. Let her remove prostitution from her presence, and adultery from between her breasts, NRS 2 Plead with your mother, plead— for she is not my wife, and I am not her husband— that she put away her whoring from her face, and her adultery from between her breasts, CEB 3 or else I will strip her naked and expose her as on the day she was born. I will make her like a desert, and turn her into a dry land, and make her die of thirst. NRS 3 or I will strip her naked and expose her as in the day she was born, and make her like a wilderness, and turn her into a parched land, and kill her with thirst. CEB 4 I will also have no compassion on her children because they are children of prostitution. NRS 4 Upon her children also I will have no pity, because they are children of whoredom. CEB 5 Their mother has played the prostitute; she who conceived them has behaved shamefully. She said, "I will seek out my lovers; they give me my bread and my water, my wool and my linen cloth, my oil and my drink." NRS 5 For their mother has played the whore; she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, "I will go after my lovers; they give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink." CEB 6 Therefore, I will line her path with thorns; and I will build a wall against her, so that she can't find her paths. NRS 6 Therefore I will hedge up her way with thorns; and I will build a wall against her, so that she cannot find her paths. CEB 7 She will go after her lovers, but she won't catch up with them; she will seek them, but she won't find them. Then she will say, "I will return to my first husband, for I had it better then than now." NRS 7 She shall pursue her lovers, but not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them. Then she shall say, "I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better with me then than now." CEB 8 She didn't know that I gave her the corn, the new wine, and the fresh oil, and that I gave her much silver, and gold that they used for Baal. NRS 8 She did not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the wine, and the oil, and who lavished upon her silver and gold that they used for Baal. CEB 9 So now I will take back my corn in its time, and my wine in its season; and I will take away my wool and my linen cloth, which were to cover her nakedness. NRS 9 Therefore I will take back my grain in its time, and my wine in its season; and I will take away my wool and my flax, which were to cover her nakedness. CEB 10 Now I will uncover her nakedness in plain view of her lovers, and no one will rescue her from me. NRS 10 Now I will uncover her shame in the sight of her lovers, and no one shall rescue her out of my hand. CEB 11 I will end all her religious celebrations, her festivals, her new moons, her Sabbath days, and all her sacred seasons. NRS 11 I will put an end to all her mirth, her festivals, her new moons, her sabbaths, and all her appointed festivals. CEB 12 I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, of which she said, "These are my pay, which my lovers have given to me." I will change them into a forest, and the wild animals will eat them. NRS 12 I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees, of which she said, "These are my pay, which my lovers have given me." I will make them a forest, and the wild animals shall devour them. CEB 13 I will punish her for the days dedicated to the Baals, when she offered sweet-smelling sacrifices to them and dressed herself up with rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers, and forgot me, says the LORD. NRS 13 I will punish her for the festival days of the Baals, when she offered incense to them and decked herself with her ring and jewelry, and went after her lovers, and forgot me, says the Lord. CEB 14 Therefore, I will charm her, and bring her into the desert, and speak tenderly to her heart. NRS 14 Therefore, I will now allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her. CEB 15 From there I will give her vineyards, and make the Achor Valley a door of hope. There she will respond to me as in the days of her youth, like the time when she came out of the land of Egypt. NRS 15 From there I will give her her vineyards, and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. There she shall respond as in the days of her youth, as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt. CEB 16 On that day, says the LORD, you will call me, "My husband," and no longer will you call me, "My Lord." NRS 16 On that day, says the Lord, you will call me, "My husband," and no longer will you call me, "My Baal." CEB 17 I will take away the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they will not be mentioned by name anymore. NRS 17 For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be mentioned by name no more. CEB 18 On that day, I will make a covenant for them with the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the creeping creatures of the fertile ground. I will do away with the bow, the sword, and war from the land; I will make you lie down in safety. NRS 18 I will make for you a covenant on that day with the wild animals, the birds of the air, and the creeping things of the ground; and I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land; and I will make you lie down in safety. CEB 19 I will take you for my wife forever; I will take you for my wife in righteousness and in justice, in devoted love, and in mercy. NRS 19 And I will take you for my wife forever; I will take you for my wife in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. CEB 20 I will take you for my wife in faithfulness; and you will know the LORD. NRS 20 I will take you for my wife in faithfulness; and you shall know the Lord. CEB 21 On that day I will answer, says the LORD. I will answer the heavens and they will answer the earth. NRS 21 On that day I will answer, says the Lord, I will answer the heavens and they shall answer the earth; CEB 22 The earth will answer the corn, the new wine, and the fresh oil, and they will answer Jezreel; NRS 22 and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil, and they shall answer Jezreel; CEB 23 I will sow him for myself in the land; and I will have compassion on No Compassion, and I will say to Not My People, "You are my people"; and he will say, "You are my God." NRS 23 and I will sow him for myself in the land. And I will have pity on Lo-ruhamah, and I will say to Lo-ammi, "You are my people"; and he shall say, "You are my God."
