NAS 1 The oracle concerning Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw. NIV 1 A prophecy against Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz saw: NAS 2 Lift up a standard on the bare hill, Raise your voice to them, Wave the hand that they may enter the doors of the nobles. NIV 2 Raise a banner on a bare hilltop, shout to them; beckon to them to enter the gates of the nobles. NAS 3 I have commanded My consecrated ones, I have even called My mighty warriors, My proudly exulting ones, To execute My anger. NIV 3 I have commanded those I prepared for battle; I have summoned my warriors to carry out my wrath— those who rejoice in my triumph. NAS 4 A sound of tumult on the mountains, Like that of many people! A sound of the uproar of kingdoms, Of nations gathered together! The LORD of hosts is mustering the army for battle. NIV 4 Listen, a noise on the mountains, like that of a great multitude! Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms, like nations massing together! The LORD Almighty is mustering an army for war. NAS 5 They are coming from a far country, From the farthest horizons, The LORD and His instruments of indignation, To destroy the whole land. NIV 5 They come from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens— the LORD and the weapons of his wrath— to destroy the whole country. NAS 6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty. NIV 6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty. NAS 7 Therefore all hands will fall limp, And every man's heart will melt. NIV 7 Because of this, all hands will go limp, every heart will melt with fear. NAS 8 They will be terrified, Pains and anguish will take hold of them; They will writhe like a woman in labor, They will look at one another in astonishment, Their faces aflame. NIV 8 Terror will seize them, pain and anguish will grip them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame. NAS 9 Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it. NIV 9 See, the day of the LORD is coming —a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger— to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it. NAS 10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not flash forth their light; The sun will be dark when it rises And the moon will not shed its light. NIV 10 The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The rising sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light. NAS 11 Thus I will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless. NIV 11 I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless. NAS 12 I will make mortal man scarcer than pure gold And mankind than the gold of Ophir. NIV 12 I will make people scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir. NAS 13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, And the earth will be shaken from its place At the fury of the LORD of hosts In the day of His burning anger. NIV 13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble; and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the LORD Almighty, in the day of his burning anger. NAS 14 And it will be that like a hunted gazelle, Or like sheep with none to gather them, They will each turn to his own people, And each one flee to his own land. NIV 14 Like a hunted gazelle, like sheep without a shepherd, they will all return to their own people, they will flee to their native land. NAS 15 Anyone who is found will be thrust through, And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword. NIV 15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword. NAS 16 Their little ones also will be dashed to pieces Before their eyes; Their houses will be plundered And their wives ravished. NIV 16 Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives violated. NAS 17 Behold, I am going to stir up the Medes against them, Who will not value silver or take pleasure in gold. NIV 17 See, I will stir up against them the Medes, who do not care for silver and have no delight in gold. NAS 18 And their bows will mow down the young men, They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb, Nor will their eye pity children. NIV 18 Their bows will strike down the young men; they will have no mercy on infants, nor will they look with compassion on children. NAS 19 And Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans' pride, Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. NIV 19 Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, the pride and glory of the Babylonians,will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah. NAS 20 It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation; Nor will the Arab pitch his tent there, Nor will shepherds make their flocks lie down there. NIV 20 She will never be inhabited or lived in through all generations; there no nomads will pitch their tents, there no shepherds will rest their flocks. NAS 21 But desert creatures will lie down there, And their houses will be full of owls; Ostriches also will live there, and shaggy goats will frolic there. NIV 21 But desert creatures will lie there, jackals will fill her houses; there the owls will dwell, and there the wild goats will leap about. NAS 22 Hyenas will howl in their fortified towers And jackals in their luxurious palaces. Her fateful time also will soon come And her days will not be prolonged. NIV 22 Hyenas will inhabit her strongholds, jackals her luxurious palaces. Her time is at hand, and her days will not be prolonged.
