John 1

LEB 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. LEB 2 This one was in the beginning with God. NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. LEB 3 All [things] came into being through him, and apart from him not one [thing] came into being that has come into being. NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. LEB 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of humanity. NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. LEB 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. LEB 6 A man came, sent from God, {whose name was} John. NIV 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. LEB 7 This one came for a witness, in order that he could testify about the light, so that all would believe through him. NIV 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. LEB 8 That one was not the light, but [came] in order that he could testify about the light. NIV 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. LEB 9 The true light, who gives light to every person, was coming into the world. NIV 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. LEB 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, and the world did not recognize him. NIV 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. LEB 11 He came to his own [things], and his own [people] did not receive him. NIV 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. LEB 12 But as many as received him--to those who believe in his name--he gave to them authority to become children of God, NIV 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— LEB 13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a husband, but of God. NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. LEB 14 And the Word became flesh and took up residence among us, and we saw his glory, glory as of the one and only from the Father, full of grace and truth. NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. LEB 15 John testified about him and cried out, saying, "This one was [he about] whom I said, 'The one who comes after me is ahead of me, because he existed before me.'" NIV 15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”) LEB 16 For from his fullness we have all received, and grace after grace. NIV 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. LEB 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came about through Jesus Christ. NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. LEB 18 No one has seen God at any time; the one and only, God, the one who is in the bosom of the Father--that one has made [him] known. NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. LEB 19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem so that they could ask him, "Who are you?" NIV 19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. LEB 20 And he confessed--and he did not deny, and confessed--"I am not the Christ!" NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” LEB 21 And they asked him, "Then who [are] you? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not!" "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No!" NIV 21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” LEB 22 Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" NIV 22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” LEB 23 He said, "I [am] 'the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, "Make straight the way of the Lord," '<note: A quotation from Isa 40:3> just as Isaiah the prophet said." NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’ ” LEB 24 (And they had been sent from the Pharisees.) NIV 24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent LEB 25 And they asked him and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" NIV 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” LEB 26 John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water. In your midst stands [one] whom you do not know-- NIV 26 “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. LEB 27 the one who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy {to untie} the strap of his sandal!" NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” LEB 28 These [things] took place in Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. LEB 29 On the next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! LEB 30 This one is [the one] about whom I said, 'After me is coming a man who is ahead of me, because he existed before me.' NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ LEB 31 And I did not know him, but in order that he could be revealed to Israel, because of this I came baptizing with water." NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.” LEB 32 And John testified, saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and remaining upon him. NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. LEB 33 And I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water, that one said to me, '[The one] upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him--this one is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' NIV 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ LEB 34 And I have seen and testify that this one is the Chosen One of God. NIV 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.” LEB 35 On the next day again John was standing [there], and two of his disciples, NIV 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. LEB 36 and looking at Jesus [as he] was walking by, he said, "Look! The Lamb of God!" NIV 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” LEB 37 And the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus. NIV 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. LEB 38 And Jesus, turning around and seeing them following [him], said to them, "What do you seek?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means [when] translated "Teacher"), "where are you staying?" NIV 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” LEB 39 He said to them, "Come and you will see!" So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day (it was about the tenth hour). NIV 39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon. LEB 40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed him. NIV 40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. LEB 41 This one first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which is translated "Christ"). NIV 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). LEB 42 He brought him to Jesus. Looking at him, Jesus said, "You are Simon the son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which is interpreted "Peter"). NIV 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter ). LEB 43 On the next day he wanted to depart for Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, "Follow me!" NIV 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” LEB 44 (Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.) NIV 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. LEB 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found [the one] whom Moses wrote [about] in the law, and the prophets wrote [about]--Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth!" NIV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” LEB 46 And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see!" NIV 46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. LEB 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, "Look! {A true Israelite} in whom is no deceit!" NIV 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” LEB 48 Nathanael said to him, "From where do you know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, [when you] were under the fig tree, I saw you." NIV 48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” LEB 49 Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the king of Israel!" NIV 49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” LEB 50 Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater [things] than these!" NIV 50 Jesus said, “You believebecause I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” LEB 51 And he said to him, "Truly, truly I say to all of you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." NIV 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, youwill see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’the Son of Man.”
