John 21

NIV 1 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: NRS 1 After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. NIV 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus ), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. NRS 2 Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. NIV 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. NRS 3 Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. NIV 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. NRS 4 Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. NIV 5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”“No,” they answered. NRS 5 Jesus said to them, "Children, you have no fish, have you?" They answered him, "No." NIV 6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. NRS 6 He said to them, "Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. NIV 7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. NRS 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. NIV 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. NRS 8 But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. NIV 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. NRS 9 When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. NIV 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” NRS 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." NIV 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. NRS 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. NIV 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. NRS 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they knew it was the Lord. NIV 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. NRS 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. NIV 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. NRS 14 This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. NIV 15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” NRS 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs." NIV 16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” NRS 16 A second time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Tend my sheep." NIV 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. NRS 17 He said to him the third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. NIV 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” NRS 18 Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go." NIV 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!” NRS 19 (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, "Follow me." NIV 20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) NRS 20 Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?" NIV 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” NRS 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?" NIV 22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” NRS 22 Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!" NIV 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” NRS 23 So the rumor spread in the community that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?" NIV 24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. NRS 24 This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. NIV 25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. NRS 25 But there are also many other things that Jesus did; if every one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
