John 6:60-71

ESV 60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?" MSG 60 Many among his disciples heard this and said, "This is tough teaching, too tough to swallow." ESV 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, "Do you take offense at this? MSG 61 Jesus sensed that his disciples were having a hard time with this and said, "Does this throw you completely? ESV 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? MSG 62 What would happen if you saw the Son of Man ascending to where he came from? ESV 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. MSG 63 The Spirit can make life. Sheer muscle and willpower don't make anything happen. Every word I've spoken to you is a Spirit-word, and so it is life-making. ESV 64 But there are some of you who do not believe." (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) MSG 64 But some of you are resisting, refusing to have any part in this." (Jesus knew from the start that some weren't going to risk themselves with him. He knew also who would betray him.) ESV 65 And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father." MSG 65 He went on to say, "This is why I told you earlier that no one is capable of coming to me on his own. You get to me only as a gift from the Father." ESV 66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. MSG 66 After this a lot of his disciples left. They no longer wanted to be associated with him. ESV 67 So Jesus said to the Twelve, "Do you want to go away as well?" MSG 67 Then Jesus gave the Twelve their chance: "Do you also want to leave?" ESV 68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, MSG 68 Peter replied, "Master, to whom would we go? You have the words of real life, eternal life. ESV 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God." MSG 69 We've already committed ourselves, confident that you are the Holy One of God." ESV 70 Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you, the Twelve? And yet one of you is a devil." MSG 70 Jesus responded, "Haven't I handpicked you, the Twelve? Still, one of you is a devil!" ESV 71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the Twelve, was going to betray him. MSG 71 He was referring to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. This man - one from the Twelve! - was even then getting ready to betray him.
