Joshua 2

LEB 1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men from Acacia Grove [as] spies, saying, "Go, view the land, especially Jericho." So they went, and entered the house of a prostitute whose name [was] Rahab, and {spent the night} there. NIV 1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. LEB 2 The king of Jericho was told, "Look, [some] men from the {Israelites} have come here tonight to search out the land." NIV 2 The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” LEB 3 And the king of Jericho sent [for] Rahab, saying, "Bring out the men who came to you, the ones who have entered your house, for they have come to search out the whole land." NIV 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.” LEB 4 But the woman took the two men and hid them. And she said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they [were] from. NIV 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. LEB 5 And when [it was time] to shut the gate {for the night}, the men left, and I do not know where they went. Chase after them quickly, for you may catch up [to] them." NIV 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.” LEB 6 (But she had taken them to the roof and had hidden them {in the stalks of flax} that she {had spread out} on the roof.) NIV 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) LEB 7 So the men chased after them on {the way to the Jordan} at the fords; and they shut the gate behind the pursuers that had gone out after them. NIV 7 So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut. LEB 8 Before {they went to sleep}, she came up to them on the roof NIV 8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof LEB 9 and said to the men, "I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away [in fear] because of your presence. NIV 9 and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. LEB 10 For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the waters of the {Red Sea} before you when you went out from Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites that [were] beyond the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. NIV 10 We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. LEB 11 We heard [this], and our hearts melted, and {no courage was left in anyone} because of your presence. For Yahweh your God [is] God in the heavens above and on the earth below. NIV 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. LEB 12 So then please swear to me by Yahweh, because {I have shown loyalty to you}, and {you will also show loyalty} {to my family}. You must give me a sign of good faith, NIV 12 “Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign LEB 13 and you will spare my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all that belongs to them; you will deliver our lives from death." NIV 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death.” LEB 14 And the men said to her, "{Our lives for yours}. If you do not report this business of ours, {we will show you loyalty and faithfulness} when Yahweh gives us the land." NIV 14 “Our lives for your lives!” the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the LORD gives us the land.” LEB 15 Then she lowered them with a rope through the window, as her house [was] on the outer side of the wall, and she [was] residing in the wall. NIV 15 So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. LEB 16 And she said to them, "Go to the mountain, so that the pursuers will not find you, and hide yourselves there three days until the pursuers return, and afterward you may go {on your way}." NIV 16 She said to them, “Go to the hills so the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days until they return, and then go on your way.” LEB 17 The men said to her, "We [will be] released from this oath of yours that you made us swear. NIV 17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us LEB 18 [When] we come to the land, you must tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you must gather your father and mother, and your brothers, and your whole family to your house. NIV 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. LEB 19 If anyone goes outside the doors of your house, {they will be responsible for their own death}, and we [will be] innocent. Anyone who will be with you in the house, {we will be responsible for their death} {if a hand is laid on them}. NIV 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. LEB 20 But if you report this business of ours, we will be released from your oath that you made us swear." NIV 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.” LEB 21 And she said, "According to your word it [will be]." Then she sent them away, and they went, and she tied the scarlet cord in the window. NIV 21 “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.” So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. LEB 22 They departed and came to the mountain, and they stayed there three days until the pursuers returned. The pursuers searched {all along the way} but did not find [them]. NIV 22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. LEB 23 The two men returned and went down from the mountain, and they crossed [over] and came to Joshua son of Nun, and they told him everything that happened to them. NIV 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. LEB 24 They said to Joshua, "Surely Yahweh has given all the land into our hand; also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away [in fear] because of our presence." NIV 24 They said to Joshua, “The LORD has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.”
