Judges 2

NAS 1 Now the angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, "I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land which I have sworn to your fathers; and I said, 'I will never break My covenant with you, NIV 1 The angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you, NAS 2 and as for you, you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.' But you have not obeyed Me; what is this you have done? NIV 2 and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.’ Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this? NAS 3 "Therefore I also said, 'I will not drive them out before you; but they will become as thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you.' " NIV 3 And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; they will become traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you.’ ” NAS 4 When the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept. NIV 4 When the angel of the LORD had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud, NAS 5 So they named that place Bochim; and there they sacrificed to the LORD . NIV 5 and they called that place Bokim. There they offered sacrifices to the LORD. NAS 6 When Joshua had dismissed the people, the sons of Israel went each to his inheritance to possess the land. NIV 6 After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. NAS 7 The people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the LORD which He had done for Israel. NIV 7 The people served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel. NAS 8 Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD , died at the age of one hundred and ten. NIV 8 Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundred and ten. NAS 9 And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. NIV 9 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. NAS 10 All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD , nor yet the work which He had done for Israel. NIV 10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel. NAS 11 Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals, NIV 11 Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals. NAS 12 and they forsook the LORD , the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked the LORD to anger. NIV 12 They forsook the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. They aroused the LORD’s anger NAS 13 So they forsook the LORD and served Baal and the Ashtaroth. NIV 13 because they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. NAS 14 The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands of plunderers who plundered them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. NIV 14 In his anger against Israel the LORD gave them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist. NAS 15 Wherever they went, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had spoken and as the LORD had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed. NIV 15 Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the LORD was against them to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress. NAS 16 Then the LORD raised up judges who delivered them from the hands of those who plundered them. NIV 16 Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hands of these raiders. NAS 17 Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they played the harlot after other gods and bowed themselves down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the LORD ; they did not do as their fathers. NIV 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They quickly turned from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the LORD’s commands. NAS 18 When the LORD raised up judges for them, the LORD was with the judge and delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed and afflicted them. NIV 18 Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the LORD relented because of their groaning under those who oppressed and afflicted them. NAS 19 But it came about when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their stubborn ways. NIV 19 But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their ancestors, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways. NAS 20 So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, "Because this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers and has not listened to My voice, NIV 20 Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel and said, “Because this nation has violated the covenant I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me, NAS 21 I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died, NIV 21 I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. NAS 22 in order to test Israel by them, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk in it as their fathers did, or not." NIV 22 I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the LORD and walk in it as their ancestors did.” NAS 23 So the LORD allowed those nations to remain, not driving them out quickly; and He did not give them into the hand of Joshua. NIV 23 The LORD had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.
