Lamentations 3

NAS 1 I am the man who has seen affliction Because of the rod of His wrath. NIV 1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of the LORD’s wrath. NAS 2 He has driven me and made me walk In darkness and not in light. NIV 2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light; NAS 3 Surely against me He has turned His hand Repeatedly all the day. NIV 3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long. NAS 4 He has caused my flesh and my skin to waste away, He has broken my bones. NIV 4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones. NAS 5 He has besieged and encompassed me with bitterness and hardship. NIV 5 He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. NAS 6 In dark places He has made me dwell, Like those who have long been dead. NIV 6 He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead. NAS 7 He has walled me in so that I cannot go out; He has made my chain heavy. NIV 7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains. NAS 8 Even when I cry out and call for help, He shuts out my prayer. NIV 8 Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer. NAS 9 He has blocked my ways with hewn stone; He has made my paths crooked. NIV 9 He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked. NAS 10 He is to me like a bear lying in wait, Like a lion in secret places. NIV 10 Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding, NAS 11 He has turned aside my ways and torn me to pieces; He has made me desolate. NIV 11 he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help. NAS 12 He bent His bow And set me as a target for the arrow. NIV 12 He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows. NAS 13 He made the arrows of His quiver To enter into my inward parts. NIV 13 He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver. NAS 14 I have become a laughingstock to all my people, Their mocking song all the day. NIV 14 I became the laughingstock of all my people; they mock me in song all day long. NAS 15 He has filled me with bitterness, He has made me drunk with wormwood. NIV 15 He has filled me with bitter herbs and given me gall to drink. NAS 16 He has broken my teeth with gravel; He has made me cower in the dust. NIV 16 He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust. NAS 17 My soul has been rejected from peace; I have forgotten happiness. NIV 17 I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. NAS 18 So I say, "My strength has perished, And so has my hope from the LORD ." NIV 18 So I say, “My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD.” NAS 19 Remember my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and bitterness. NIV 19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. NAS 20 Surely my soul remembers And is bowed down within me. NIV 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. NAS 21 This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. NIV 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: NAS 22 The LORD'S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. NIV 22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. NAS 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. NIV 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. NAS 24 "The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I have hope in Him." NIV 24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” NAS 25 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the person who seeks Him. NIV 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; NAS 26 It is good that he waits silently For the salvation of the LORD . NIV 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. NAS 27 It is good for a man that he should bear The yoke in his youth. NIV 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. NAS 28 Let him sit alone and be silent Since He has laid it on him. NIV 28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him. NAS 29 Let him put his mouth in the dust, Perhaps there is hope. NIV 29 Let him bury his face in the dust— there may yet be hope. NAS 30 Let him give his cheek to the smiter, Let him be filled with reproach. NIV 30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. NAS 31 For the Lord will not reject forever, NIV 31 For no one is cast off by the Lord forever. NAS 32 For if He causes grief, Then He will have compassion According to His abundant lovingkindness. NIV 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. NAS 33 For He does not afflict willingly Or grieve the sons of men. NIV 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone. NAS 34 To crush under His feet All the prisoners of the land, NIV 34 To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land, NAS 35 To deprive a man of justice In the presence of the Most High, NIV 35 to deny people their rights before the Most High, NAS 36 To defraud a man in his lawsuit - Of these things the Lord does not approve. NIV 36 to deprive them of justice— would not the Lord see such things? NAS 37 Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, Unless the Lord has commanded it? NIV 37 Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it? NAS 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High That both good and ill go forth? NIV 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come? NAS 39 Why should any living mortal, or any man, Offer complaint in view of his sins? NIV 39 Why should the living complain when punished for their sins? NAS 40 Let us examine and probe our ways, And let us return to the LORD . NIV 40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD. NAS 41 We lift up our heart and hands Toward God in heaven; NIV 41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven, and say: NAS 42 We have transgressed and rebelled, You have not pardoned. NIV 42 “We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven. NAS 43 You have covered Yourself with anger And pursued us; You have slain and have not spared. NIV 43 “You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you have slain without pity. NAS 44 You have covered Yourself with a cloud So that no prayer can pass through. NIV 44 You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through. NAS 45 You have made us mere offscouring and refuse In the midst of the peoples. NIV 45 You have made us scum and refuse among the nations. NAS 46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us. NIV 46 “All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us. NAS 47 Panic and pitfall have befallen us, Devastation and destruction; NIV 47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls, ruin and destruction.” NAS 48 My eyes run down with streams of water Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people. NIV 48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed. NAS 49 My eyes pour down unceasingly , Without stopping, NIV 49 My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief, NAS 50 Until the LORD looks down And sees from heaven. NIV 50 until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees. NAS 51 My eyes bring pain to my soul Because of all the daughters of my city. NIV 51 What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women of my city. NAS 52 My enemies without cause Hunted me down like a bird; NIV 52 Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird. NAS 53 They have silenced me in the pit And have placed a stone on me. NIV 53 They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me; NAS 54 Waters flowed over my head; I said, "I am cut off!" NIV 54 the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to perish. NAS 55 I called on Your name, O LORD , Out of the lowest pit. NIV 55 I called on your name, LORD, from the depths of the pit. NAS 56 You have heard my voice, "Do not hide Your ear from my prayer for relief, From my cry for help." NIV 56 You heard my plea: “Do not close your ears to my cry for relief.” NAS 57 You drew near when I called on You; You said, "Do not fear!" NIV 57 You came near when I called you, and you said, “Do not fear.” NAS 58 O Lord , You have pleaded my soul's cause; You have redeemed my life. NIV 58 You, Lord, took up my case; you redeemed my life. NAS 59 O LORD , You have seen my oppression; Judge my case. NIV 59 LORD, you have seen the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause! NAS 60 You have seen all their vengeance, All their schemes against me. NIV 60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me. NAS 61 You have heard their reproach, O LORD , All their schemes against me. NIV 61 LORD, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me— NAS 62 The lips of my assailants and their whispering Are against me all day long. NIV 62 what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long. NAS 63 Look on their sitting and their rising; I am their mocking song. NIV 63 Look at them! Sitting or standing, they mock me in their songs. NAS 64 You will recompense them, O LORD , According to the work of their hands. NIV 64 Pay them back what they deserve, LORD, for what their hands have done. NAS 65 You will give them hardness of heart, Your curse will be on them. NIV 65 Put a veil over their hearts, and may your curse be on them! NAS 66 You will pursue them in anger and destroy them From under the heavens of the LORD ! NIV 66 Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.
