Luke 10

CEB 1 After these things, the Lord commissioned seventy-two others and sent them on ahead in pairs to every city and place he was about to go. NRS 1 After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. CEB 2 He said to them, “The harvest is bigger than you can imagine, but there are few workers. Therefore, plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest. NRS 2 He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. CEB 3 Go! Be warned, though, that I'm sending you out as lambs among wolves. NRS 3 Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. CEB 4 Carry no wallet, no bag, and no sandals. Don't even greet anyone along the way. NRS 4 Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. CEB 5 Whenever you enter a house, first say, ‘May peace be on this house.' NRS 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, "Peace to this house!' CEB 6 If anyone there shares God's peace, then your peace will rest on that person. If not, your blessing will return to you. NRS 6 And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. CEB 7 Remain in this house, eating and drinking whatever they set before you, for workers deserve their pay. Don't move from house to house. NRS 7 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. CEB 8 Whenever you enter a city and its people welcome you, eat what they set before you. NRS 8 Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; CEB 9 Heal the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘God's kingdom has come upon you.' NRS 9 cure the sick who are there, and say to them, "The kingdom of God has come near to you.' CEB 10 Whenever you enter a city and the people don't welcome you, go out into the streets and say, NRS 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, CEB 11 ‘As a complaint against you, we brush off the dust of your city that has collected on our feet. But know this: God's kingdom has come to you.' NRS 11 "Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.' CEB 12 I assure you that Sodom will be better off on Judgment Day than that city. NRS 12 I tell you, on that day it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that town. CEB 13 "How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin. How terrible it will be for you, Bethsaida. If the miracles done among you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have changed their hearts and lives long ago. They would have sat around in funeral clothes and ashes. NRS 13 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. CEB 14 But Tyre and Sidon will be better off at the judgment than you. NRS 14 But at the judgment it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you. CEB 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be honored by being raised up to heaven? No, you will be cast down to the place of the dead. NRS 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades. CEB 16 Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. Whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me." NRS 16 "Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me." CEB 17 The seventy-two returned joyously, saying, "Lord, even the demons submit themselves to us in your name." NRS 17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!" CEB 18 Jesus replied, "I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning. NRS 18 He said to them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. CEB 19 Look, I have given you authority to crush snakes and scorpions underfoot. I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you. NRS 19 See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. CEB 20 Nevertheless, don't rejoice because the spirits submit to you. Rejoice instead that your names are written in heaven." NRS 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." CEB 21 At that very moment, Jesus overflowed with joy from the Holy Spirit and said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you've hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and shown them to babies. Indeed, Father, this brings you happiness. NRS 21 At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. CEB 22 My Father has handed all things over to me. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wants to reveal him." NRS 22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." CEB 23 Turning to the disciples, he said privately, "Happy are the eyes that see what you see. NRS 23 Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! CEB 24 I assure you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see and hear what you hear, but they didn't." NRS 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it." CEB 25 A legal expert stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to gain eternal life?" NRS 25 Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" CEB 26 Jesus replied, "What is written in the Law? How do you interpret it?" NRS 26 He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" CEB 27 He responded, "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself." NRS 27 He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." CEB 28 Jesus said to him, "You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live." NRS 28 And he said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live." CEB 29 But the legal expert wanted to prove that he was right, so he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" NRS 29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" CEB 30 Jesus replied, "A man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. He encountered thieves, who stripped him naked, beat him up, and left him near death. NRS 30 Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. CEB 31 Now it just so happened that a priest was also going down the same road. When he saw the injured man, he crossed over to the other side of the road and went on his way. NRS 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. CEB 32 Likewise, a Levite came by that spot, saw the injured man, and crossed over to the other side of the road and went on his way. NRS 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. CEB 33 A Samaritan, who was on a journey, came to where the man was. But when he saw him, he was moved with compassion. NRS 33 But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. CEB 34 The Samaritan went to him and bandaged his wounds, tending them with oil and wine. Then he placed the wounded man on his own donkey, took him to an inn, and took care of him. NRS 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. CEB 35 The next day, he took two full days' worth of wages and gave them to the innkeeper. He said, ‘Take care of him, and when I return, I will pay you back for any additional costs.' NRS 35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, "Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' CEB 36 What do you think? Which one of these three was a neighbor to the man who encountered thieves?" NRS 36 Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" CEB 37 Then the legal expert said, "The one who demonstrated mercy toward him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise." NRS 37 He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." CEB 38 While Jesus and his disciples were traveling, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him as a guest. NRS 38 Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. CEB 39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his message. NRS 39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. CEB 40 By contrast, Martha was preoccupied with getting everything ready for their meal. So Martha came to him and said, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to prepare the table all by myself? Tell her to help me." NRS 40 But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." CEB 41 The Lord answered, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things. NRS 41 But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; CEB 42 One thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part. It won't be taken away from her." NRS 42 there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."
