ESV 15 When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, "Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!" MSG 15 That triggered a response from one of the guests: "How fortunate the one who gets to eat dinner in God's kingdom!" ESV 16 But he said to him, "A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. MSG 16 Jesus followed up. "Yes. For there was once a man who threw a great dinner party and invited many. ESV 17 And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, 'Come, for everything is now ready.' MSG 17 When it was time for dinner, he sent out his servant to the invited guests, saying, 'Come on in; the food's on the table.' ESV 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.' MSG 18 "Then they all began to beg off, one after another making excuses. The first said, 'I bought a piece of property and need to look it over. Send my regrets.' ESV 19 And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.' MSG 19 "Another said, 'I just bought five teams of oxen, and I really need to check them out. Send my regrets.' ESV 20 And another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' MSG 20 "And yet another said, 'I just got married and need to get home to my wife.' ESV 21 So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, 'Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.' MSG 21 "The servant went back and told the master what had happened. He was outraged and told the servant, 'Quickly, get out into the city streets and alleys. Collect all who look like they need a square meal, all the misfits and homeless and wretched you can lay your hands on, and bring them here.' ESV 22 And the servant said, 'Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.' MSG 22 "The servant reported back, 'Master, I did what you commanded - and there's still room.' ESV 23 And the master said to the servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. MSG 23 "The master said, 'Then go to the country roads. Whoever you find, drag them in. I want my house full! ESV 24 For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.'" MSG 24 Let me tell you, not one of those originally invited is going to get so much as a bite at my dinner party.'"
