Luke 22

ESV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. MSG 1 The Feast of Unleavened Bread, also called Passover, drew near. ESV 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people. MSG 2 The high priests and religion scholars were looking for a way to do away with Jesus but, fearful of the people, they were also looking for a way to cover their tracks. ESV 3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. MSG 3 That's when Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot. He was one of the Twelve. ESV 4 He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. MSG 4 Leaving the others, he conferred with the high priests and the Temple guards about how he might betray Jesus to them. ESV 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. MSG 5 They couldn't believe their good luck and agreed to pay him well. ESV 6 So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd. MSG 6 He gave them his word and started looking for a way to betray Jesus, but out of sight of the crowd. ESV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. MSG 7 The Day of Unleavened Bread came, the day the Passover lamb was butchered. ESV 8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it." MSG 8 Jesus sent Peter and John off, saying, "Go prepare the Passover for us so we can eat it together." ESV 9 They said to him, "Where will you have us prepare it?" MSG 9 They said, "Where do you want us to do this?" ESV 10 He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters MSG 10 He said, "Keep your eyes open as you enter the city. A man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him home. ESV 11 and tell the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' MSG 11 Then speak with the owner of the house: The Teacher wants to know, 'Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?' ESV 12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there." MSG 12 He will show you a spacious second-story room, swept and ready. Prepare the meal there." ESV 13 And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. MSG 13 They left, found everything just as he told them, and prepared the Passover meal. ESV 14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. MSG 14 When it was time, he sat down, all the apostles with him, ESV 15 And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. MSG 15 and said, "You've no idea how much I have looked forward to eating this Passover meal with you before I enter my time of suffering. ESV 16 For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." MSG 16 It's the last one I'll eat until we all eat it together in the kingdom of God." ESV 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves. MSG 17 Taking the cup, he blessed it, then said, "Take this and pass it among you. ESV 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." MSG 18 As for me, I'll not drink wine again until the kingdom of God arrives." ESV 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." MSG 19 Taking bread, he blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, given for you. Eat it in my memory." ESV 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. MSG 20 He did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant written in my blood, blood poured out for you. ESV 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. MSG 21 "Do you realize that the hand of the one who is betraying me is at this moment on this table? ESV 22 For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!" MSG 22 It's true that the Son of Man is going down a path already marked out - no surprises there. But for the one who turns him in, turns traitor to the Son of Man, this is doomsday." ESV 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this. MSG 23 They immediately became suspicious of each other and began quizzing one another, wondering who might be about to do this. ESV 24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. MSG 24 Within minutes they were bickering over who of them would end up the greatest. ESV 25 And he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. MSG 25 But Jesus intervened: "Kings like to throw their weight around and people in authority like to give themselves fancy titles. ESV 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. MSG 26 It's not going to be that way with you. Let the senior among you become like the junior; let the leader act the part of the servant. ESV 27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. MSG 27 "Who would you rather be: the one who eats the dinner or the one who serves the dinner? You'd rather eat and be served, right? But I've taken my place among you as the one who serves. ESV 28 "You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, MSG 28 And you've stuck with me through thick and thin. ESV 29 and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, MSG 29 Now I confer on you the royal authority my Father conferred on me ESV 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. MSG 30 so you can eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and be strengthened as you take up responsibilities among the congregations of God's people. ESV 31 "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, MSG 31 "Simon, stay on your toes. Satan has tried his best to separate all of you from me, like chaff from wheat. ESV 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers." MSG 32 Simon, I've prayed for you in particular that you not give in or give out. When you have come through the time of testing, turn to your companions and give them a fresh start." ESV 33 Peter said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death." MSG 33 Peter said, "Master, I'm ready for anything with you. I'd go to jail for you. I'd die for you!" ESV 34 Jesus said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me." MSG 34 Jesus said, "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, Peter, but before the rooster crows you will have three times denied that you know me." ESV 35 And he said to them, "When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing." MSG 35 Then Jesus said, "When I sent you out and told you to travel light, to take only the bare necessities, did you get along all right?" "Certainly," they said, "we got along just fine." ESV 36 He said to them, "But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. MSG 36 He said, "This is different. Get ready for trouble. Look to what you'll need; there are difficult times ahead. Pawn your coat and get a sword. ESV 37 For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors.' For what is written about me has its fulfillment." MSG 37 What was written in Scripture, 'He was lumped in with the criminals,' gets its final meaning in me. Everything written about me is now coming to a conclusion." ESV 38 And they said, "Look, Lord, here are two swords." And he said to them, "It is enough." MSG 38 They said, "Look, Master, two swords!" But he said, "Enough of that; no more sword talk!" ESV 39 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. MSG 39 Leaving there, he went, as he so often did, to Mount Olives. The disciples followed him. ESV 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation." MSG 40 When they arrived at the place, he said, "Pray that you don't give in to temptation." ESV 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, MSG 41 He pulled away from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed, ESV 42 saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done." MSG 42 "Father, remove this cup from me. But please, not what I want. What do you want?" ESV 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. MSG 43 At once an angel from heaven was at his side, strengthening him. ESV 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. MSG 44 He prayed on all the harder. Sweat, wrung from him like drops of blood, poured off his face. ESV 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, MSG 45 He got up from prayer, went back to the disciples and found them asleep, drugged by grief. ESV 46 and he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation." MSG 46 He said, "What business do you have sleeping? Get up. Pray so you won't give in to temptation." ESV 47 While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, MSG 47 No sooner were the words out of his mouth than a crowd showed up, Judas, the one from the Twelve, in the lead. He came right up to Jesus to kiss him. ESV 48 but Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?" MSG 48 Jesus said, "Judas, you would betray the Son of Man with a kiss?" ESV 49 And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" MSG 49 When those with him saw what was happening, they said, "Master, shall we fight?" ESV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. MSG 50 One of them took a swing at the Chief Priest's servant and cut off his right ear. ESV 51 But Jesus said, "No more of this!" And he touched his ear and healed him. MSG 51 Jesus said, "Let them be. Even in this." Then, touching the servant's ear, he healed him. ESV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? MSG 52 Jesus spoke to those who had come - high priests, Temple police, religion leaders: "What is this, jumping me with swords and clubs as if I were a dangerous criminal? ESV 53 When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness." MSG 53 Day after day I've been with you in the Temple and you've not so much as lifted a hand against me. But do it your way - it's a dark night, a dark hour." ESV 54 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, and Peter was following at a distance. MSG 54 Arresting Jesus, they marched him off and took him into the house of the Chief Priest. Peter followed, but at a safe distance. ESV 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. MSG 55 In the middle of the courtyard some people had started a fire and were sitting around it, trying to keep warm. ESV 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, "This man also was with him." MSG 56 One of the serving maids sitting at the fire noticed him, then took a second look and said, "This man was with him!" ESV 57 But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know him." MSG 57 He denied it, "Woman, I don't even know him." ESV 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not." MSG 58 A short time later, someone else noticed him and said, "You're one of them." But Peter denied it: "Man, I am not." ESV 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, "Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean." MSG 59 About an hour later, someone else spoke up, really adamant: "He's got to have been with him! He's got 'Galilean' written all over him." ESV 60 But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. MSG 60 Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about." At that very moment, the last word hardly off his lips, a rooster crowed. ESV 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." MSG 61 Just then, the Master turned and looked at Peter. Peter remembered what the Master had said to him: "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." ESV 62 And he went out and wept bitterly. MSG 62 He went out and cried and cried and cried. ESV 63 Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. MSG 63 The men in charge of Jesus began poking fun at him, slapping him around. ESV 64 They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?" MSG 64 They put a blindfold on him and taunted, "Who hit you that time?" ESV 65 And they said many other things against him, blaspheming him. MSG 65 They were having a grand time with him. ESV 66 When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said, MSG 66 When it was morning, the religious leaders of the people and the high priests and scholars all got together and brought him before their High Council. ESV 67 "If you are the Christ, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe, MSG 67 They said, "Are you the Messiah?" ESV 68 and if I ask you, you will not answer. MSG 68 If I asked what you meant by your question, you wouldn't answer me. ESV 69 But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God." MSG 69 So here's what I have to say: From here on the Son of Man takes his place at God's right hand, the place of power." ESV 70 So they all said, "Are you the Son of God, then?" And he said to them, "You say that I am." MSG 70 They all said, "So you admit you claim to be the Son of God?" "You're the ones who keep saying it," he said. ESV 71 Then they said, "What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips." MSG 71 But they had made up their minds, "Why do we need any more evidence? We've all heard him as good as say it himself."
