CEB 1 Very early in the morning on the first day of the week, the women went to the tomb, bringing the fragrant spices they had prepared. NRS 3 but when they went in, they did not find the body. CEB 4 They didn't know what to make of this. Suddenly, two men were standing beside them in gleaming bright clothing. NRS 4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. CEB 5 The women were frightened and bowed their faces toward the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? NRS 5 The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. CEB 6 He isn't here, but has been raised. Remember what he told you while he was still in Galilee, NRS 6 Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, CEB 7 that the Human One must be handed over to sinners, be crucified, and on the third day rise again." NRS 7 that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again." CEB 8 Then they remembered his words. NRS 8 Then they remembered his words, CEB 9 When they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven and all the others. CEB 11 Their words struck the apostles as nonsense, and they didn't believe the women. NRS 11 But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. CEB 12 But Peter ran to the tomb. When he bent over to look inside, he saw only the linen cloth. Then he returned home, wondering what had happened. NRS 12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened. CEB 13 On that same day, two disciples were traveling to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. NRS 13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, CEB 14 They were talking to each other about everything that had happened. NRS 14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. CEB 15 While they were discussing these things, Jesus himself arrived and joined them on their journey. NRS 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, CEB 16 They were prevented from recognizing him. NRS 16 but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. CEB 17 He said to them, "What are you talking about as you walk along?" They stopped, their faces downcast. NRS 17 And he said to them, "What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?" They stood still, looking sad. CEB 18 The one named Cleopas replied, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who is unaware of the things that have taken place there over the last few days?" NRS 18 Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?" CEB 19 He said to them, "What things?" They said to him, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth. Because of his powerful deeds and words, he was recognized by God and all the people as a prophet. NRS 19 He asked them, "What things?" They replied, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, CEB 20 But our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him. NRS 20 and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. CEB 21 We had hoped he was the one who would redeem Israel. All these things happened three days ago. NRS 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. CEB 22 But there's more: Some women from our group have left us stunned. They went to the tomb early this morning NRS 22 Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, CEB 23 and didn't find his body. They came to us saying that they had even seen a vision of angels who told them he is alive. NRS 23 and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. CEB 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women said. They didn't see him." NRS 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him." CEB 25 Then Jesus said to them, "You foolish people! Your dull minds keep you from believing all that the prophets talked about. NRS 25 Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! CEB 26 Wasn't it necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then enter into his glory?" NRS 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?" CEB 27 Then he interpreted for them the things written about himself in all the scriptures, starting with Moses and going through all the Prophets. NRS 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. CEB 28 When they came to Emmaus, he acted as if he was going on ahead. NRS 28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. CEB 29 But they urged him, saying, "Stay with us. It's nearly evening, and the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them. NRS 29 But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over." So he went in to stay with them. CEB 30 After he took his seat at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. NRS 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. CEB 31 Their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight. NRS 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. CEB 32 They said to each other, "Weren't our hearts on fire when he spoke to us along the road and when he explained the scriptures for us?" NRS 32 They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?" CEB 33 They got up right then and returned to Jerusalem. They found the eleven and their companions gathered together. NRS 33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. CEB 34 They were saying to each other, "The Lord really has risen! He appeared to Simon!" NRS 34 They were saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!" CEB 35 Then the two disciples described what had happened along the road and how Jesus was made known to them as he broke the bread. NRS 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. CEB 36 While they were saying these things, Jesus himself stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" NRS 36 While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." CEB 37 They were terrified and afraid. They thought they were seeing a ghost. NRS 37 They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. CEB 38 He said to them, "Why are you startled? Why are doubts arising in your hearts? NRS 38 He said to them, "Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? CEB 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It's really me! Touch me and see, for a ghost doesn't have flesh and bones like you see I have." NRS 39 Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." CEB 40 As he said this, he showed them his hands and feet. NRS 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. CEB 41 Because they were wondering and questioning in the midst of their happiness, he said to them, "Do you have anything to eat?" NRS 41 While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" CEB 42 They gave him a piece of baked fish. NRS 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, CEB 43 Taking it, he ate it in front of them. NRS 43 and he took it and ate in their presence. CEB 44 Jesus said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the Law from Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled." NRS 44 Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled." CEB 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. NRS 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, CEB 46 He said to them, "This is what is written: the Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, NRS 46 and he said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, CEB 47 and a change of heart and life for the forgiveness of sins must be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. NRS 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. CEB 48 You are witnesses of these things. NRS 48 You are witnesses of these things. CEB 49 Look, I'm sending to you what my Father promised, but you are to stay in the city until you have been furnished with heavenly power." NRS 49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." CEB 50 He led them out as far as Bethany, where he lifted his hands and blessed them. NRS 50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. CEB 51 As he blessed them, he left them and was taken up to heaven. NRS 51 While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. CEB 52 They worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem overwhelmed with joy.
