Luke 8:1-15

ESV 1 Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, MSG 1 He continued according to plan, traveled to town after town, village after village, preaching God's kingdom, spreading the Message. The Twelve were with him. ESV 2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, MSG 2 There were also some women in their company who had been healed of various evil afflictions and illnesses: Mary, the one called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out; ESV 3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means. MSG 3 Joanna, wife of Chuza, Herod's manager; and Susanna - along with many others who used their considerable means to provide for the company. ESV 4 And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: MSG 4 As they went from town to town, a lot of people joined in and traveled along. He addressed them, using this story: ESV 5 "A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. MSG 5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed. Some of it fell on the road; it was tramped down and the birds ate it. ESV 6 And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. MSG 6 Other seed fell in the gravel; it sprouted, but withered because it didn't have good roots. ESV 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. MSG 7 Other seed fell in the weeds; the weeds grew with it and strangled it. ESV 8 And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold." As he said these things, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." MSG 8 Other seed fell in rich earth and produced a bumper crop. "Are you listening to this? Really listening?" ESV 9 And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, MSG 9 His disciples asked, "Why did you tell this story?" ESV 10 he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that 'seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.' MSG 10 He said, "You've been given insight into God's kingdom - you know how it works. There are others who need stories. But even with stories some of them aren't going to get it: Their eyes are open but don't see a thing, Their ears are open but don't hear a thing. ESV 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. MSG 11 "This story is about some of those people. The seed is the Word of God. ESV 12 The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. MSG 12 The seeds on the road are those who hear the Word, but no sooner do they hear it than the Devil snatches it from them so they won't believe and be saved. ESV 13 And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. MSG 13 "The seeds in the gravel are those who hear with enthusiasm, but the enthusiasm doesn't go very deep. It's only another fad, and the moment there's trouble it's gone. ESV 14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. MSG 14 "And the seed that fell in the weeds - well, these are the ones who hear, but then the seed is crowded out and nothing comes of it as they go about their lives worrying about tomorrow, making money, and having fun. ESV 15 As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. MSG 15 "But the seed in the good earth - these are the good-hearts who seize the Word and hold on no matter what, sticking with it until there's a harvest.
