1 Jesús es ungido en Betania<br />Faltaban dos días para la Pascua y el Festival de los Panes sin Levadura. Los principales sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley religiosa seguían buscando una oportunidad para capturar a Jesús en secreto y matarlo.

2 «Pero no durante la celebración de la Pascua —acordaron—, no sea que la gente cause disturbios».

3 Mientras tanto, Jesús se encontraba en Betania, en la casa de Simón, un hombre que había tenido lepra. Mientras comía,<br /> entró una mujer con un hermoso frasco de alabastro que contenía un perfume costoso, preparado con esencias de nardo. Ella abrió el frasco y derramó el perfume sobre la cabeza de Jesús.

4 Algunos que estaban a la mesa se indignaron. «¿Por qué desperdiciar un perfume tan costoso? —preguntaron—.

5 ¡Podría haberse vendido por el salario de un año<br /> y el dinero dado a los pobres!». Así que la regañaron severamente.

6 Pero Jesús respondió:

7 Siempre habrá pobres entre ustedes, y pueden ayudarlos cuando quieran, pero a mí no siempre me tendrán.

8 Ella hizo lo que pudo y ungió mi cuerpo en preparación para el entierro.

9 Les digo la verdad, en cualquier lugar del mundo donde se predique la Buena Noticia, se recordará y se hablará de lo que hizo esta mujer».

10 Judas acuerda traicionar a Jesús<br />Entonces Judas Iscariote, uno de los doce discípulos, fue a ver a los principales sacerdotes para llegar a un acuerdo de cómo entregarles a Jesús a traición.

11 Ellos quedaron complacidos cuando oyeron la razón de su visita y le prometieron darle dinero. Entonces él comenzó a buscar una oportunidad para traicionar a Jesús.

12 La última cena<br />El primer día del Festival de los Panes sin Levadura, cuando se sacrifica el cordero de la Pascua, los discípulos de Jesús le preguntaron: «¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a prepararte la cena de Pascua?».

13 Así que Jesús envió a dos de ellos a Jerusalén con las siguientes instrucciones:

14 En la casa donde él entre, díganle al dueño: “El Maestro pregunta: ‘¿Dónde está el cuarto de huéspedes para que pueda comer la cena de Pascua con mis discípulos?’”.

15 Él los llevará a un cuarto grande en el piso de arriba, que ya está listo. Allí deben preparar nuestra cena».

16 Entonces los dos discípulos entraron en la ciudad y encontraron todo como Jesús les había dicho y allí prepararon la cena de Pascua.

17 Por la noche, Jesús llegó con los doce discípulos.

18 Mientras estaban a la mesa,<br /> comiendo, Jesús dijo:

19 Ellos, muy afligidos, le preguntaron uno por uno: «¿Seré yo?».

20 Él contestó:

21 Pues el Hijo del Hombre<br /> tiene que morir, tal como lo declararon las Escrituras hace mucho tiempo. Pero qué aflicción le espera a aquel que lo traiciona. ¡Para ese hombre sería mucho mejor no haber nacido!».

22 Mientras comían, Jesús tomó un poco de pan y lo bendijo. Luego lo partió en trozos, lo dio a sus discípulos y dijo:

23 Y tomó en sus manos una copa de vino y dio gracias a Dios por ella. Se la dio a ellos, y todos bebieron de la copa.

24 Y les dijo:

25 Les digo la verdad, no volveré a beber vino hasta el día en que lo beba nuevo en el reino de Dios».

26 Luego cantaron un himno y salieron al monte de los Olivos.

27 Jesús predice la negación de Pedro<br />En el camino, Jesús les dijo:

28 Sin embargo, después de ser levantado de los muertos, iré delante de ustedes a Galilea y allí los veré».

29 Pedro le dijo:<br />—Aunque todos te abandonen, yo jamás lo haré.

30 Jesús respondió:

31 —¡No! —exclamó Pedro enfáticamente—. Aunque tenga que morir contigo, ¡jamás te negaré!<br />Y los demás juraron lo mismo.

32 Jesús ora en Getsemaní<br />Fueron al huerto de olivos llamado Getsemaní, y Jesús dijo:

33 Se llevó a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan y comenzó a afligirse y angustiarse profundamente.

34 Les dijo:

35 Se adelantó un poco más y cayó en tierra. Pidió en oración que, si fuera posible, pasara de él la horrible hora que le esperaba.

36 —clamó—,

37 Luego volvió y encontró a los discípulos dormidos. Le dijo a Pedro:

38 Velen y oren para que no cedan ante la tentación, porque el espíritu está dispuesto, pero el cuerpo es débil».

39 Entonces Jesús los dejó otra vez e hizo la misma oración que antes.

40 Cuando regresó de nuevo adonde estaban ellos, los encontró dormidos porque no podían mantener los ojos abiertos. Y no sabían qué decir.

41 Cuando volvió a ellos por tercera vez, les dijo:

42 Levántense, vamos. ¡Miren, el que me traiciona ya está aquí!».

43 Traicionan y arrestan a Jesús<br />En ese mismo instante, mientras Jesús todavía hablaba, llegó Judas, uno de los doce discípulos, junto con una multitud de hombres armados con espadas y palos. Los habían enviado los principales sacerdotes, los maestros de la ley religiosa y los ancianos.

44 El traidor, Judas, había acordado previamente con ellos una señal: «Sabrán a cuál arrestar cuando yo lo salude con un beso. Entonces podrán llevárselo bajo custodia».

45 En cuanto llegaron, Judas se acercó a Jesús. «¡Rabí!»<br /> —exclamó, y le dio el beso.

46 Entonces los otros agarraron a Jesús y lo arrestaron;

47 pero uno de los hombres que estaban con Jesús sacó su espada e hirió al esclavo del sumo sacerdote cortándole una oreja.

48 Jesús les preguntó:

49 ¿Por qué no me arrestaron en el templo? Estuve enseñando allí entre ustedes todos los días. Pero estas cosas suceden para que se cumpla lo que dicen las Escrituras acerca de mí».

50 Entonces todos sus discípulos lo abandonaron y huyeron.

51 Un joven que los seguía sólo llevaba puesta una camisa de noche de lino. Cuando la turba intentó agarrarlo,

52 su camisa de noche se deslizó y huyó desnudo.

53 Jesús ante el Concilio<br />Llevaron a Jesús a la casa del sumo sacerdote, donde se habían reunido los principales sacerdotes, los ancianos y los maestros de la ley religiosa.

54 Mientras tanto, Pedro lo siguió de lejos y entró directamente al patio del sumo sacerdote. Allí se sentó con los guardias para calentarse junto a la fogata.

55 Adentro, los principales sacerdotes y todo el Concilio Supremo<br /> intentaban encontrar pruebas contra Jesús para poder ejecutarlo, pero no pudieron encontrar ninguna.

56 Había muchos falsos testigos que hablaban en contra de él, pero todos se contradecían.

57 Finalmente unos hombres se pusieron de pie y dieron el siguiente falso testimonio:

58 «Nosotros lo oímos decir: “Yo destruiré este templo hecho con manos humanas y en tres días construiré otro, no hecho con manos humanas”».

59 ¡Pero aun así sus relatos no coincidían!

60 Entonces el sumo sacerdote se puso de pie ante todos y le preguntó a Jesús: «Bien, ¿no vas a responder a estos cargos? ¿Qué tienes que decir a tu favor?».

61 Pero Jesús se mantuvo callado y no contestó. Entonces el sumo sacerdote le preguntó:<br />—¿Eres tú el Mesías, el Hijo del Bendito?

62 Jesús dijo:

63 Entonces el sumo sacerdote se rasgó las vestiduras en señal de horror y dijo: «¿Para qué necesitamos más testigos?

64 Todos han oído la blasfemia que dijo. ¿Cuál es el veredicto?».<br />«¡Culpable! —gritaron todos—. ¡Merece morir!».

65 Entonces algunos comenzaron a escupirle, y le vendaron los ojos y le daban puñetazos. «¡Profetízanos!», se burlaban. Y los guardias lo abofeteaban mientras se lo llevaban.

66 Pedro niega a Jesús<br />Mientras tanto, Pedro estaba abajo, en el patio. Una de las sirvientas que trabajaba para el sumo sacerdote pasó

67 y vio que Pedro se calentaba junto a la fogata. Se quedó mirándolo y dijo:<br />—Tú eres uno de los que estaban con Jesús de Nazaret.

68 Pero Pedro lo negó y dijo:<br />—No sé de qué hablas.<br />Y salió afuera, a la entrada. En ese instante, cantó un gallo.

69 Cuando la sirvienta vio a Pedro parado allí, comenzó a decirles a los otros: «¡No hay duda de que este hombre es uno de ellos!».

70 Pero Pedro lo negó otra vez.<br />Un poco más tarde, algunos de los otros que estaban allí confrontaron a Pedro y dijeron:<br />—Seguro que tú eres uno de ellos, porque eres galileo.

71 Pedro juró:<br />—¡Que me caiga una maldición si les miento! ¡No conozco a ese hombre del que hablan!

72 Inmediatamente, el gallo cantó por segunda vez.<br />De repente, las palabras de Jesús pasaron rápidamente por la mente de Pedro: <br /> y se echó a llorar.

1 Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.

2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”

3 While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume?

5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.

7 The poor you will always have with you,and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.

8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.

9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.

11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.

14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’

15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.

18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.

21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

24 “This is my blood of thecovenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them.

25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written: “ ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”

29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.”

31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”

33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.

34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him.

36 “Abba,Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?

38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.

40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.

42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.”

45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him.

46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him.

47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?

49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”

50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him,

52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together.

54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any.

56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:

58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’ ”

59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?”

61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

63 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked.

64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death.

65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.

67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. “You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway.

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.”

70 Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twiceyou will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
