1 Jesús es rechazado en Nazaret<br />Jesús salió de esa región y regresó con sus discípulos a Nazaret, su pueblo.

2 El siguiente día de descanso, comenzó a enseñar en la sinagoga, y muchos de los que lo oían quedaban asombrados. Preguntaban: «¿De dónde sacó toda esa sabiduría y el poder para realizar semejantes milagros?».

3 Y se burlaban: «Es un simple carpintero, hijo de María<br /> y hermano de Santiago, José,<br /> Judas y Simón. Y sus hermanas viven aquí mismo entre nosotros». Se sentían profundamente ofendidos y se negaron a creer en él.

4 Entonces Jesús les dijo:

5 Y, debido a la incredulidad de ellos, Jesús no pudo hacer ningún milagro allí, excepto poner sus manos sobre algunos enfermos y sanarlos.

6 Y estaba asombrado de su incredulidad.<br />Jesús envía a los doce discípulos<br />Después Jesús fue de aldea en aldea enseñando a la gente.

7 Reunió a sus doce discípulos, comenzó a enviarlos de dos en dos y les dio autoridad para expulsar espíritus malignos.

8 Les dijo que no llevaran nada para el viaje —ni comida, ni bolso de viaje, ni dinero<br />— sino solo un bastón.

9 Les permitió llevar sandalias pero no una muda de ropa.

10 Les dijo:

11 Pero si en algún lugar se niegan a recibirlos o a escucharlos, sacúdanse el polvo de los pies al salir para mostrar que abandonan a esas personas a su suerte».

12 Entonces los discípulos salieron y decían a todos que se arrepintieran de sus pecados y volvieran a Dios.

13 También expulsaban muchos demonios y sanaban a muchos enfermos ungiéndolos con aceite de oliva.

14 Muerte de Juan el Bautista<br />El rey Herodes Antipas pronto oyó hablar de Jesús, porque todos hablaban de él. Algunos decían:<br /> «Este debe ser Juan el Bautista que resucitó de los muertos. Por eso puede hacer semejantes milagros».

15 Otros decían: «Es Elías». Incluso otros afirmaban: «Es un profeta como los grandes profetas del pasado».

16 Cuando Herodes oyó hablar de Jesús, dijo: «Juan, el hombre que yo decapité, ha regresado de los muertos».

17 Pues Herodes había enviado soldados para arrestar y encarcelar a Juan para hacerle un favor a Herodías. Él se casó con ella a pesar de que era esposa de su hermano, Felipe.

18 Juan le había estado diciendo a Herodes: «Es contra la ley de Dios que te cases con la esposa de tu hermano».

19 Por eso Herodías le guardaba rencor a Juan y quería matarlo; pero sin el visto bueno de Herodes, ella no podía hacer nada,

20 porque Herodes respetaba a Juan y lo protegía porque sabía que era un hombre bueno y santo. Herodes se inquietaba mucho siempre que hablaba con Juan, pero aun así le gustaba escucharlo.

21 Finalmente, Herodías tuvo su oportunidad en el cumpleaños de Herodes. Él dio una fiesta para los altos funcionarios de su gobierno, los oficiales del ejército y los ciudadanos prominentes de Galilea.

22 Luego la hija del rey, también llamada Herodías,<br /> entró y bailó una danza que agradó mucho a Herodes y a sus invitados. «Pídeme lo que quieras —le dijo el rey a la muchacha— y te lo daré».

23 Incluso juró: «Te daré cualquier cosa que me pidas, ¡hasta la mitad de mi reino!».

24 Ella salió y le preguntó a su madre:<br />—¿Qué debo pedir?<br />Su madre le dijo:<br />—¡Pide la cabeza de Juan el Bautista!

25 Así que la muchacha regresó de prisa y le dijo al rey:<br />—¡Quiero ahora mismo la cabeza de Juan el Bautista en una bandeja!

26 Entonces el rey se arrepintió profundamente de lo que había dicho, pero debido a los juramentos que había hecho delante de sus invitados, no le podía negar lo que pedía.

27 Así que envió de inmediato a un verdugo a la prisión para que le cortara la cabeza a Juan y luego se la trajera. El soldado decapitó a Juan en la prisión,

28 trajo su cabeza en una bandeja y se la dio a la muchacha, quien se la llevó a su madre.

29 Cuando los discípulos de Juan oyeron lo que había sucedido, fueron a buscar el cuerpo y lo pusieron en una tumba.

30 Jesús alimenta a cinco mil<br />Los apóstoles regresaron de su viaje y le contaron a Jesús todo lo que habían hecho y enseñado.

31 Entonces Jesús les dijo: <br /> Lo dijo porque había tanta gente que iba y venía que Jesús y sus apóstoles no tenían tiempo ni para comer.

32 Así que salieron en la barca a un lugar tranquilo, donde pudieran estar a solas;

33 pero muchos los reconocieron y los vieron salir, y gente de muchos pueblos corrió a lo largo de la orilla y llegó antes que ellos.

34 Cuando Jesús salió de la barca, vio a la gran multitud y tuvo compasión de ellos, porque eran como ovejas sin pastor. Entonces comenzó a enseñarles muchas cosas.

35 Al atardecer, los discípulos se le acercaron y le dijeron:<br />—Este es un lugar alejado y ya se está haciendo tarde.

36 Despide a las multitudes para que puedan ir a las granjas y aldeas cercanas a comprar algo de comer.

37 Jesús les dijo:<br />—¿Con qué? —preguntaron—. ¡Tendríamos que trabajar durante meses para ganar suficiente<br /> a fin de comprar comida para toda esta gente!

38 —preguntó—. <br />Ellos regresaron e informaron:<br />—Tenemos cinco panes y dos pescados.

39 Entonces Jesús les dijo a los discípulos que sentaran a la gente en grupos sobre la hierba verde.

40 Así que se sentaron en grupos de cincuenta y de cien.

41 Jesús tomó los cinco panes y los dos pescados, miró hacia el cielo y los bendijo. Luego, a medida que partía los panes en trozos, se los daba a sus discípulos para que los distribuyeran entre la gente. También dividió los pescados para que cada persona tuviera su porción.

42 Todos comieron cuanto quisieron,

43 y después los discípulos juntaron doce canastas con lo que sobró de pan y pescado.

44 ¡Un total de cinco mil hombres y sus familias se alimentaron de esos panes!

45 Jesús camina sobre el agua<br />Inmediatamente después, Jesús insistió en que sus discípulos regresaran a la barca y comenzaran a cruzar el lago hacia Betsaida mientras él enviaba a la gente a casa.

46 Después de despedirse de la gente, subió a las colinas para orar a solas.

47 Muy tarde esa misma noche, los discípulos estaban en la barca en medio del lago y Jesús estaba en tierra, solo.

48 Jesús vio que ellos se encontraban en serios problemas, pues remaban con mucha fuerza y luchaban contra el viento y las olas. A eso de las tres de la madrugada,<br /> Jesús se acercó a ellos caminando sobre el agua. Su intención era pasarlos de largo,

49 pero cuando los discípulos lo vieron caminar sobre el agua, gritaron de terror pues pensaron que era un fantasma.

50 Todos quedaron aterrados al verlo.<br />Pero Jesús les habló de inmediato:

51 Entonces subió a la barca, y el viento se detuvo. Ellos estaban totalmente asombrados

52 porque todavía no entendían el significado del milagro de los panes. Tenían el corazón demasiado endurecido para comprenderlo.

53 Después de cruzar el lago, arribaron a Genesaret. Llevaron la barca hasta la orilla

54 y bajaron. Los habitantes reconocieron a Jesús enseguida

55 y corrieron por toda la región llevando a los enfermos en camillas hasta donde oían que él estaba.

56 Por donde iba —fueran aldeas, ciudades o granjas— le llevaban enfermos a las plazas. Le suplicaban que permitiera a los enfermos tocar al menos el fleco de su túnica, y todos los que tocaban a Jesús eran sanados.

1 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples.

2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?

3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.

4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”

5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.

6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.

7 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.

8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.

9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.

10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.

11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”

12 They went out and preached that people should repent.

13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

15 Others said, “He is Elijah.” And still others claimed, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.”

16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”

17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married.

18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to,

20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled ; yet he liked to listen to him.

21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.

22 When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.”

23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”

24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” “The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.

25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her.

27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison,

28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.

29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.

31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.

33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.

34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late.

36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”

37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages ! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”

38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”

39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.

40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.

41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.

42 They all ate and were satisfied,

43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.

44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.

46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.

47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land.

48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,

49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out,

50 because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed,

52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.

53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.

54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus.

55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.

56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
