Mark 8

CEB 1 In those days there was another large crowd with nothing to eat. Jesus called his disciples and told them, NRS 1 In those days when there was again a great crowd without anything to eat, he called his disciples and said to them, CEB 2 "I feel sorry for the crowd because they have been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. NRS 2 "I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. CEB 3 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they won't have enough strength to travel, for some have come a long distance." NRS 3 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way—and some of them have come from a great distance." CEB 4 His disciples responded, "How can anyone get enough food in this wilderness to satisfy these people?" NRS 4 His disciples replied, "How can one feed these people with bread here in the desert?" CEB 5 Jesus asked, "How much bread do you have?" They said, "Seven loaves." NRS 5 He asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" They said, "Seven." CEB 6 He told the crowd to sit on the ground. He took the seven loaves, gave thanks, broke them apart, and gave them to his disciples to distribute; and they gave the bread to the crowd. NRS 6 Then he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground; and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them to the crowd. CEB 7 They also had a few fish. He said a blessing over them, then gave them to the disciples to hand out also. NRS 7 They had also a few small fish; and after blessing them, he ordered that these too should be distributed. CEB 8 They ate until they were full. They collected seven baskets full of leftovers. NRS 8 They ate and were filled; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. CEB 9 This was a crowd of about four thousand people! Jesus sent them away, NRS 9 Now there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. CEB 10 then got into a boat with his disciples and went over to the region of Dalmanutha. NRS 10 And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha. CEB 11 The Pharisees showed up and began to argue with Jesus. To test him, they asked for a sign from heaven. NRS 11 The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, asking him for a sign from heaven, to test him. CEB 12 With an impatient sigh, Jesus said, "Why does this generation look for a sign? I assure you that no sign will be given to it." NRS 12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, "Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation." CEB 13 Leaving them, he got back in the boat and crossed to the other side of the lake. NRS 13 And he left them, and getting into the boat again, he went across to the other side. CEB 14 Jesus' disciples had forgotten to bring any bread, so they had only one loaf with them in the boat. NRS 14 Now the disciples had forgotten to bring any bread; and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. CEB 15 He gave them strict orders: "Watch out and be on your guard for the yeast of the Pharisees as well as the yeast of Herod." NRS 15 And he cautioned them, saying, "Watch out—beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod." CEB 16 The disciples discussed this among themselves, "He said this because we have no bread." NRS 16 They said to one another, "It is because we have no bread." CEB 17 Jesus knew what they were discussing and said, "Why are you talking about the fact that you don't have any bread? Don't you grasp what has happened? Don't you understand? Are your hearts so resistant to what God is doing? NRS 17 And becoming aware of it, Jesus said to them, "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? CEB 18 Don't you have eyes? Why can't you see? Don't you have ears? Why can't you hear? Don't you remember? NRS 18 Do you have eyes, and fail to see? Do you have ears, and fail to hear? And do you not remember? CEB 19 When I broke five loaves of bread for those five thousand people, how many baskets full of leftovers did you gather?" They answered, "Twelve." NRS 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?" They said to him, "Twelve." CEB 20 "And when I broke seven loaves of bread for those four thousand people, how many baskets full of leftovers did you gather?" They answered, "Seven." NRS 20 "And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?" And they said to him, "Seven." CEB 21 Jesus said to them, "And you still don't understand?" NRS 21 Then he said to them, "Do you not yet understand?" CEB 22 Jesus and his disciples came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to Jesus and begged him to touch and heal him. NRS 22 They came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him. CEB 23 Taking the blind man's hand, Jesus led him out of the village. After spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on the man, he asked him, "Do you see anything?" NRS 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village; and when he had put saliva on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, "Can you see anything?" CEB 24 The man looked up and said, "I see people. They look like trees, only they are walking around." NRS 24 And the man looked up and said, "I can see people, but they look like trees, walking." CEB 25 Then Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes again. He looked with his eyes wide open, his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly. NRS 25 Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he looked intently and his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. CEB 26 Then Jesus sent him home, saying, "Don't go into the village!" NRS 26 Then he sent him away to his home, saying, "Do not even go into the village." CEB 27 Jesus and his disciples went into the villages near Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" NRS 27 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" CEB 28 They told him, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets." NRS 28 And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." CEB 29 He asked them, "And what about you? Who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ." NRS 29 He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." CEB 30 Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone about him. NRS 30 And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. CEB 31 Then Jesus began to teach his disciples: "The Human One must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and the legal experts, and be killed, and then, after three days, rise from the dead." NRS 31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. CEB 32 He said this plainly. But Peter took hold of Jesus and, scolding him, began to correct him. NRS 32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. CEB 33 Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, then sternly corrected Peter: "Get behind me, Satan. You are not thinking God's thoughts but human thoughts." NRS 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." CEB 34 After calling the crowd together with his disciples, Jesus said to them, "All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. NRS 34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. CEB 35 All who want to save their lives will lose them. But all who lose their lives because of me and because of the good news will save them. NRS 35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. CEB 36 Why would people gain the whole world but lose their lives? NRS 36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? CEB 37 What will people give in exchange for their lives? NRS 37 Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? CEB 38 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this unfaithful and sinful generation, the Human One will be ashamed of that person when he comes in the Father's glory with the holy angels." NRS 38 Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."
