Matthew 14

ESV 1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus, MSG 1 At about this time, Herod, the regional ruler, heard what was being said about Jesus. ESV 2 and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him." MSG 2 He said to his servants, "This has to be John the Baptizer come back from the dead. That's why he's able to work miracles!" ESV 3 For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, MSG 3 Herod had arrested John, put him in chains, and sent him to prison to placate Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. ESV 4 because John had been saying to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." MSG 4 John had provoked Herod by naming his relationship with Herodias "adultery." ESV 5 And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. MSG 5 Herod wanted to kill him, but he was afraid because so many people revered John as a prophet of God. ESV 6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, MSG 6 But at his birthday celebration, he got his chance. Herodias's daughter provided the entertainment, dancing for the guests. She swept Herod away. ESV 7 so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. MSG 7 In his drunken enthusiasm, he promised her on oath anything she wanted. ESV 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter." MSG 8 Already coached by her mother, she was ready: "Give me, served up on a platter, the head of John the Baptizer." ESV 9 And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given. MSG 9 That sobered the king up fast. Unwilling to lose face with his guests, he did it ESV 10 He sent and had John beheaded in the prison, MSG 10 - ordered John's head cut off ESV 11 and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. MSG 11 and presented to the girl on a platter. She in turn gave it to her mother. ESV 12 And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus. MSG 12 Later, John's disciples got the body, gave it a reverent burial, and reported to Jesus. ESV 13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. MSG 13 When Jesus got the news, he slipped away by boat to an out-of-the-way place by himself. But unsuccessfully - someone saw him and the word got around. Soon a lot of people from the nearby villages walked around the lake to where he was. ESV 14 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. MSG 14 When he saw them coming, he was overcome with pity and healed their sick. ESV 15 Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." MSG 15 Toward evening the disciples approached him. "We're out in the country and it's getting late. Dismiss the people so they can go to the villages and get some supper." ESV 16 But Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." MSG 16 But Jesus said, "There is no need to dismiss them. You give them supper." ESV 17 They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." MSG 17 "All we have are five loaves of bread and two fish," they said. ESV 18 And he said, "Bring them here to me." MSG 18 Jesus said, "Bring them here." ESV 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. MSG 19 Then he had the people sit on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, lifted his face to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and gave the bread to the disciples. The disciples then gave the food to the congregation. ESV 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. MSG 20 They all ate their fill. They gathered twelve baskets of leftovers. ESV 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. MSG 21 About five thousand were fed. ESV 22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. MSG 22 As soon as the meal was finished, he insisted that the disciples get in the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he dismissed the people. ESV 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, MSG 23 With the crowd dispersed, he climbed the mountain so he could be by himself and pray. He stayed there alone, late into the night. ESV 24 but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. MSG 24 Meanwhile, the boat was far out to sea when the wind came up against them and they were battered by the waves. ESV 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. MSG 25 At about four o'clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them walking on the water. ESV 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out in fear. MSG 26 They were scared out of their wits. "A ghost!" they said, crying out in terror. ESV 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid." MSG 27 But Jesus was quick to comfort them. "Courage, it's me. Don't be afraid." ESV 28 And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." MSG 28 Peter, suddenly bold, said, "Master, if it's really you, call me to come to you on the water." ESV 29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. MSG 29 He said, "Come ahead." ESV 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." MSG 30 But when he looked down at the waves churning beneath his feet, he lost his nerve and started to sink. He cried, "Master, save me!" ESV 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" MSG 31 Jesus didn't hesitate. He reached down and grabbed his hand. Then he said, "Faint-heart, what got into you?" ESV 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. MSG 32 The two of them climbed into the boat, and the wind died down. ESV 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." MSG 33 The disciples in the boat, having watched the whole thing, worshiped Jesus, saying, "This is it! You are God's Son for sure!" ESV 34 And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. MSG 34 On return, they beached the boat at Gennesaret. ESV 35 And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and brought to him all who were sick MSG 35 When the people got wind that he was back, they sent out word through the neighborhood and rounded up all the sick, ESV 36 and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well. MSG 36 who asked for permission to touch the edge of his coat. And whoever touched him was healed.
