ESV 1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: NIV 1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons : ESV 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. ESV 3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, NIV 3 I thank my God every time I remember you. ESV 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, NIV 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy ESV 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. NIV 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, ESV 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. NIV 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. ESV 7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. NIV 7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. ESV 8 For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. NIV 8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. ESV 9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, NIV 9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, ESV 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, NIV 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, ESV 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. NIV 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. ESV 12 I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, NIV 12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. ESV 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. NIV 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. ESV 14 And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. NIV 14 And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear. ESV 15 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. NIV 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. ESV 16 The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. NIV 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. ESV 17 The former proclaim Christ out of rivalry, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. NIV 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. ESV 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice, NIV 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, ESV 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, NIV 19 for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. ESV 20 as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. NIV 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. ESV 21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. NIV 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. ESV 22 If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. NIV 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! ESV 23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. NIV 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; ESV 24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. NIV 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. ESV 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, NIV 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, ESV 26 so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. NIV 26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me. ESV 27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, NIV 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel ESV 28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. NIV 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God. ESV 29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, NIV 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, ESV 30 engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. NIV 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
