NIV 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. NRSA 3 I thank my God every time I remember you, NIV 3 I thank my God every time I remember you. NRSA 4 constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, NIV 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy NRSA 5 because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. NIV 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, NRSA 6 I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. NIV 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. NRSA 7 It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. NIV 7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. NRSA 8 For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. NIV 8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. NRSA 9 And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight NIV 9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, NRSA 10 to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, NIV 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, NRSA 11 having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. NIV 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. NRSA 12 I want you to know, beloved, that what has happened to me has actually helped to spread the gospel, NIV 12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. NRSA 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to everyone else that my imprisonment is for Christ; NIV 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. NRSA 14 and most of the brothers and sisters, having been made confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, dare to speak the word with greater boldness and without fear. NIV 14 And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear. NRSA 15 Some proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill. NIV 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. NRSA 16 These proclaim Christ out of love, knowing that I have been put here for the defense of the gospel; NIV 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. NRSA 17 the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but intending to increase my suffering in my imprisonment. NIV 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. NRSA 18 What does it matter? Just this, that Christ is proclaimed in every way, whether out of false motives or true; and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, NIV 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, NRSA 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance. NIV 19 for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. NRSA 20 It is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be put to shame in any way, but that by my speaking with all boldness, Christ will be exalted now as always in my body, whether by life or by death. NIV 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. NRSA 21 For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. NIV 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. NRSA 22 If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which I prefer. NIV 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! NRSA 23 I am hard pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; NIV 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; NRSA 24 but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. NIV 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. NRSA 25 Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, NIV 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, NRSA 26 so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again. NIV 26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me. NRSA 27 Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel, NIV 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel NRSA 28 and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God's doing. NIV 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God. NRSA 29 For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well— NIV 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, NRSA 30 since you are having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. NIV 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
