Proverbs 1

CEBA 1 The proverbs of Solomon, King David's son, from Israel: NIV 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: CEBA 2 Their purpose is to teach wisdom and discipline, to help one understand wise sayings. NIV 2 for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; CEBA 3 They provide insightful instruction, which is righteous, just, and full of integrity. NIV 3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; CEBA 4 They make the naive mature, the young knowledgeable and discreet. NIV 4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,knowledge and discretion to the young— CEBA 5 The wise hear them and grow in wisdom; those with understanding gain guidance. NIV 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance— CEBA 6 They help one understand proverbs and difficult sayings, the words of the wise, and their puzzles. NIV 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. CEBA 7 Wisdom begins with the fear of the LORD, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. NIV 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. CEBA 8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction; don't neglect your mother's teaching; NIV 8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. CEBA 9 for they are a graceful wreath on your head, and beads for your neck. NIV 9 They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. CEBA 10 My son, don't let sinners entice you. Don't go NIV 10 My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. CEBA 11 when they say: "Come with us. Let's set up a deadly ambush. Let's secretly wait for the innocent just for fun. NIV 11 If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul; CEBA 12 Let's swallow up the living like the grave— whole, like those who go down into the pit. NIV 12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; CEBA 13 We'll find all sorts of precious wealth; we'll fill our houses with plunder. NIV 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; CEBA 14 Throw in your lot with us; we'll share our money." NIV 14 cast lots with us; we will all share the loot”— CEBA 15 My son, don't go on the path with them; keep your feet from their way, NIV 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; CEBA 16 because their feet run to evil; they hurry to spill blood. NIV 16 for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood. CEBA 17 It's useless to cast a net in the sight of a bird. NIV 17 How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it! CEBA 18 But these sinners set up a deadly ambush; they lie in wait for their own lives. NIV 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves! CEBA 19 These are the ways of all who seek unjust gain; it costs them their lives. NIV 19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it. CEBA 20 Wisdom shouts in the street; in the public square she raises her voice. NIV 20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; CEBA 21 Above the noisy crowd, she calls out. At the entrances of the city gates, she has her say: NIV 21 on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech: CEBA 22 "How long will you clueless people love your naïveté, mockers hold their mocking dear, and fools hate knowledge? NIV 22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? CEBA 23 You should respond when I correct you. Look, I'll pour out my spirit on you. I'll reveal my words to you. NIV 23 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. CEBA 24 I invited you, but you rejected me; I stretched out my hand to you, but you paid no attention. NIV 24 But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, CEBA 25 You ignored all my advice, and you didn't want me to correct you. NIV 25 since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, CEBA 26 So I'll laugh at your disaster; I'll make fun of you when dread comes over you, NIV 26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you— CEBA 27 when terror hits you like a hurricane, and your disaster comes in like a tornado, when distress and oppression overcome you. NIV 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. CEBA 28 Then they will call me, but I won't answer; they will seek me, but won't find me NIV 28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, CEBA 29 because they hated knowledge and didn't choose the fear of the LORD. NIV 29 since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD. CEBA 30 They didn't want my advice; they rejected all my corrections. NIV 30 Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, CEBA 31 They will eat from the fruit of their way, and they'll be full of their own schemes. NIV 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. CEBA 32 The immature will die because they turn away; smugness will destroy fools. NIV 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; CEBA 33 Those who obey me will dwell securely, untroubled by the dread of harm." NIV 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”
