Proverbs 13

NAS 1 A wise son accepts his father's discipline, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. NIV 1 A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not respond to rebukes. NAS 2 From the fruit of a man's mouth he enjoys good, But the desire of the treacherous is violence. NIV 2 From the fruit of their lips people enjoy good things, but the unfaithful have an appetite for violence. NAS 3 The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. NIV 3 Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin. NAS 4 The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, But the soul of the diligent is made fat. NIV 4 A sluggard’s appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied. NAS 5 A righteous man hates falsehood, But a wicked man acts disgustingly and shamefully. NIV 5 The righteous hate what is false, but the wicked make themselves a stench and bring shame on themselves. NAS 6 Righteousness guards the one whose way is blameless, But wickedness subverts the sinner. NIV 6 Righteousness guards the person of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner. NAS 7 There is one who pretends to be rich, but has nothing ; Another pretends to be poor, but has great wealth. NIV 7 One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. NAS 8 The ransom of a man's life is his wealth, But the poor hears no rebuke. NIV 8 A person’s riches may ransom their life, but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes. NAS 9 The light of the righteous rejoices, But the lamp of the wicked goes out. NIV 9 The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out. NAS 10 Through insolence comes nothing but strife, But wisdom is with those who receive counsel. NIV 10 Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice. NAS 11 Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles, But the one who gathers by labor increases it. NIV 11 Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow. NAS 12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire fulfilled is a tree of life. NIV 12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. NAS 13 The one who despises the word will be in debt to it, But the one who fears the commandment will be rewarded. NIV 13 Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it, but whoever respects a command is rewarded. NAS 14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, To turn aside from the snares of death. NIV 14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death. NAS 15 Good understanding produces favor, But the way of the treacherous is hard. NIV 15 Good judgment wins favor, but the way of the unfaithful leads to their destruction. NAS 16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge, But a fool displays folly. NIV 16 All who are prudent act with knowledge, but fools expose their folly. NAS 17 A wicked messenger falls into adversity, But a faithful envoy brings healing. NIV 17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy brings healing. NAS 18 Poverty and shame will come to him who neglects discipline, But he who regards reproof will be honored. NIV 18 Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored. NAS 19 Desire realized is sweet to the soul, But it is an abomination to fools to turn away from evil. NIV 19 A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools detest turning from evil. NAS 20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will suffer harm. NIV 20 Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. NAS 21 Adversity pursues sinners, But the righteous will be rewarded with prosperity. NIV 21 Trouble pursues the sinner, but the righteous are rewarded with good things. NAS 22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, And the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous. NIV 22 A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous. NAS 23 Abundant food is in the fallow ground of the poor, But it is swept away by injustice . NIV 23 An unplowed field produces food for the poor, but injustice sweeps it away. NAS 24 He who withholds his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him diligently. NIV 24 Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them. NAS 25 The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, But the stomach of the wicked is in need. NIV 25 The righteous eat to their hearts’ content, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry.
