Psalm 89

CEB 1 I will sing of the LORD's loyal love forever. I will proclaim your faithfulness with my own mouth from one generation to the next. NRS 1 I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations. CEB 2 That's why I say, "Your loyal love is rightly built—forever! You establish your faithfulness in heaven." NRS 2 I declare that your steadfast love is established forever; your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens. CEB 3 You said,"I made a covenant with my chosen one; I promised my servant David: NRS 3 You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to my servant David: CEB 4 ‘I will establish your offspring forever; I will build up your throne from one generation to the next.'" Selah NRS 4 "I will establish your descendants forever, and build your throne for all generations.' " (Selah) CEB 5 Heaven thanks you for your wondrous acts, LORD— for your faithfulness too— in the assembly of the holy ones. NRS 5 Let the heavens praise your wonders, O Lord, your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones. CEB 6 Is there any in the sky who could compare to the LORD? Who among the gods is equal to the LORD? NRS 6 For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord? Who among the heavenly beings is like the Lord, CEB 7 God is respected in the council of the holy ones; God is awesome and revered more than all those around him. NRS 7 a God feared in the council of the holy ones, great and awesome above all that are around him? CEB 8 Who is like you, LORD God of heavenly forces? Mighty LORD, your faithfulness surrounds you! NRS 8 O Lord God of hosts, who is as mighty as you, O Lord? Your faithfulness surrounds you. CEB 9 You rule over the surging sea: When its waves rise up, it's you who makes them still. NRS 9 You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them. CEB 10 It's you who crushed Rahab like a dead body; you scattered your enemies with your strong arm. NRS 10 You crushed Rahab like a carcass; you scattered your enemies with your mighty arm. CEB 11 Heaven is yours! The earth too! The world and all that fills it— you made all of it! North and south—you created them! NRS 11 The heavens are yours, the earth also is yours; the world and all that is in it—you have founded them. CEB 12 The mountains Tabor and Hermon shout praises to your name. NRS 12 The north and the south —you created them; Tabor and Hermon joyously praise your name. CEB 13 You have a powerful arm; your hand is strong; your strong hand is raised high! NRS 13 You have a mighty arm; strong is your hand, high your right hand. CEB 14 Your throne is built on righteousness and justice; loyal love and faithfulness stand in front of you. NRS 14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. CEB 15 The people who know the celebratory shout are truly happy! They walk in the light of your presence, LORD! NRS 15 Happy are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your countenance; CEB 16 They rejoice in your name all day long and are uplifted by your righteousness NRS 16 they exult in your name all day long, and extol your righteousness. CEB 17 because you are the splendor of their strength. By your favor you make us strong NRS 17 For you are the glory of their strength; by your favor our horn is exalted. CEB 18 because our shield is the LORD's own; our king belongs to the holy one of Israel! NRS 18 For our shield belongs to the Lord, our king to the Holy One of Israel. CEB 19 Once you spoke in a vision to your faithful servants: I placed a crown on a strong man. I raised up someone specially chosen from the people. NRS 19 Then you spoke in a vision to your faithful one, and said: "I have set the crown on one who is mighty, I have exalted one chosen from the people. CEB 20 I discovered my servant David. I anointed him with my holy oil. NRS 20 I have found my servant David; with my holy oil I have anointed him; CEB 21 My hand will sustain him— yes, my arm will strengthen him! NRS 21 my hand shall always remain with him; my arm also shall strengthen him. CEB 22 No enemy will oppress him; no wicked person will make him suffer. NRS 22 The enemy shall not outwit him, the wicked shall not humble him. CEB 23 I will crush all his foes in front of him. I will strike down all those who hate him. NRS 23 I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him. CEB 24 My faithfulness and my loyal love will be with him. He will be strengthened by my name. NRS 24 My faithfulness and steadfast love shall be with him; and in my name his horn shall be exalted. CEB 25 I will set his hand on the sea. I will set his strong hand on the rivers. NRS 25 I will set his hand on the sea and his right hand on the rivers. CEB 26 He will cry out to me: "You are my father, my God, the rock of my salvation." NRS 26 He shall cry to me, "You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation!' CEB 27 Yes, I'll make him the one born first— I'll make him the high king of all earth's kings. NRS 27 I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. CEB 28 I will always guard my loyal love toward him. My covenant with him will last forever. NRS 28 Forever I will keep my steadfast love for him, and my covenant with him will stand firm. CEB 29 I will establish his dynasty for all time. His throne will last as long as heaven does. NRS 29 I will establish his line forever, and his throne as long as the heavens endure. CEB 30 But if his children ever abandon my Instruction, stop following my rules— NRS 30 If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my ordinances, CEB 31 if they treat my statutes like dirt, stop keeping my commandments— NRS 31 if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments, CEB 32 then I will punish their sin with a stick, and I will punish their wrongdoing with a severe beating. NRS 32 then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with scourges; CEB 33 But even then I won't withdraw my loyal love from him. I won't betray my faithfulness. NRS 33 but I will not remove from him my steadfast love, or be false to my faithfulness. CEB 34 I won't break my covenant. I won't renege on what crossed my lips. NRS 34 I will not violate my covenant, or alter the word that went forth from my lips. CEB 35 By my own holiness I've sworn one thing: I will not lie to David. NRS 35 Once and for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David. CEB 36 His dynasty will last forever. His throne will be like the sun, always before me. NRS 36 His line shall continue forever, and his throne endure before me like the sun. CEB 37 It will be securely established forever; like the moon, a faithful witness in the sky. Selah NRS 37 It shall be established forever like the moon, an enduring witness in the skies." (Selah) CEB 38 But you, God, have rejected and despised him. You've become infuriated with your anointed one. NRS 38 But now you have spurned and rejected him; you are full of wrath against your anointed. CEB 39 You've canceled the covenant with your servant. You've thrown his crown in the dirt. NRS 39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant; you have defiled his crown in the dust. CEB 40 You've broken through all his walls. You've made his strongholds a pile of ruins. NRS 40 You have broken through all his walls; you have laid his strongholds in ruins. CEB 41 All those who pass by plunder him. He's nothing but a joke to his neighbors. NRS 41 All who pass by plunder him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors. CEB 42 You lifted high his foes' strong hand. You gave all his enemies reason to celebrate. NRS 42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice. CEB 43 Yes, you dulled the edge of his sword and didn't support him in battle. NRS 43 Moreover, you have turned back the edge of his sword, and you have not supported him in battle. CEB 44 You've put an end to his splendor. You've thrown his throne to the ground. NRS 44 You have removed the scepter from his hand, and hurled his throne to the ground. CEB 45 You've shortened the prime of his life. You've wrapped him up in shame. Selah NRS 45 You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with shame. (Selah) CEB 46 How long will it last, LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire? NRS 46 How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire? CEB 47 Remember how short my life is! Have you created humans for no good reason? NRS 47 Remember how short my time is— for what vanity you have created all mortals! CEB 48 Who lives their life without seeing death? Who is ever rescued from the grip of the grave? Selah NRS 48 Who can live and never see death? Who can escape the power of Sheol? (Selah) CEB 49 Where now are your loving acts from long ago, my Lord— the same ones you promised to David by your own faithfulness? NRS 49 Lord, where is your steadfast love of old, which by your faithfulness you swore to David? CEB 50 Remember your servant's abuse, my Lord! Remember how I bear in my heart all the insults of the nations, NRS 50 Remember, O Lord, how your servant is taunted; how I bear in my bosom the insults of the peoples, CEB 51 the ones your enemies, LORD, use— the ones they use to abuse every step your anointed one takes. NRS 51 with which your enemies taunt, O Lord, with which they taunted the footsteps of your anointed. CEB 52 Bless the LORD forever! Amen and Amen! NRS 52 Blessed be the Lord forever. Amen and Amen.
