1 Control de la lengua<br />Amados hermanos, no muchos deberían llegar a ser maestros en la iglesia, porque los que enseñamos seremos juzgados de una manera más estricta.

2 Es cierto que todos cometemos muchos errores. Pues, si pudiéramos dominar la lengua, seríamos perfectos, capaces de controlarnos en todo sentido.

3 Podemos hacer que un caballo vaya adonde queramos si le ponemos un pequeño freno en la boca.

4 También un pequeño timón hace que un enorme barco gire adonde desee el capitán, por fuertes que sean los vientos.

5 De la misma manera, la lengua es algo pequeño que pronuncia grandes discursos.<br />Así también una sola chispa puede incendiar todo un bosque.

6 Y la lengua es una llama de fuego. Es un mundo entero de maldad que corrompe todo el cuerpo. Puede incendiar toda la vida, porque el infierno mismo la enciende.

7 El ser humano puede domar toda clase de animales, aves, reptiles y peces,

8 pero nadie puede domar la lengua. Es maligna e incansable, llena de veneno mortal.

9 A veces alaba a nuestro Señor y Padre, y otras veces maldice a quienes Dios creó a su propia imagen.

10 Y así, la bendición y la maldición salen de la misma boca. Sin duda, hermanos míos, ¡eso no está bien!

11 ¿Acaso puede brotar de un mismo manantial agua dulce y agua amarga?

12 ¿Acaso una higuera puede dar aceitunas o una vid, higos? No, como tampoco puede uno sacar agua dulce de un manantial salado.

13 La verdadera sabiduría proviene de Dios<br />Si ustedes son sabios y entienden los caminos de Dios, demuéstrenlo viviendo una vida honesta y haciendo buenas acciones con la humildad que proviene de la sabiduría;

14 pero si tienen envidias amargas y ambiciones egoístas en el corazón, no encubran la verdad con jactancias y mentiras.

15 Pues la envidia y el egoísmo no forman parte de la sabiduría que proviene de Dios. Dichas cosas son terrenales, puramente humanas y demoníacas.

16 Pues, donde hay envidias y ambiciones egoístas, también habrá desorden y toda clase de maldad.

17 Sin embargo, la sabiduría que proviene del cielo es, ante todo, pura y también ama la paz; siempre es amable y dispuesta a ceder ante los demás. Está llena de compasión y de buenas acciones. No muestra favoritismo y siempre es sincera.

18 Y los que procuran la paz sembrarán semillas de paz y recogerán una cosecha de justicia.

1 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.

4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.

5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.

6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind,

8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.

10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?

12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.

15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.
