Acts 10

NLT

MSG

1 In Caesarea there lived a Roman army officer named Cornelius, who was a captain of the Italian Regiment.
1 There was a man named Cornelius who lived in Caesarea, captain of the Italian Guard stationed there.
2 He was a devout, God-fearing man, as was everyone in his household. He gave generously to the poor and prayed regularly to God.
3 One afternoon about three o’clock, he had a vision in which he saw an angel of God coming toward him. “Cornelius!” the angel said.
3 He was a thoroughly good man. He had led everyone in his house to live worshipfully before God, was always helping people in need, and had the habit of prayer. One day about three o'clock in the afternoon he had a vision. An angel of God, as real as his next-door neighbor, came in and said, "Cornelius."
4 Cornelius stared at him in terror. “What is it, sir?” he asked the angel. And the angel replied, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have been received by God as an offering!
4 Cornelius stared hard, wondering if he was seeing things. Then he said, "What do you want, sir?"
5 Now send some men to Joppa, and summon a man named Simon Peter.
5 Here's what you are to do. Send men to Joppa to get Simon, the one everyone calls Peter.
6 He is staying with Simon, a tanner who lives near the seashore.”
6 He is staying with Simon the Tanner, whose house is down by the sea."
7 As soon as the angel was gone, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier, one of his personal attendants.
7 As soon as the angel was gone, Cornelius called two servants and one particularly devout soldier from the guard.
8 He told them what had happened and sent them off to Joppa.
8 He went over with them in great detail everything that had just happened, and then sent them off to Joppa.
9 The next day as Cornelius’s messengers were nearing the town, Peter went up on the flat roof to pray. It was about noon,
9 The next day as the three travelers were approaching the town, Peter went out on the balcony to pray. It was about noon.
10 and he was hungry. But while a meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.
10 Peter got hungry and started thinking about lunch. While lunch was being prepared, he fell into a trance.
11 He saw the sky open, and something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners.
11 He saw the skies open up. Something that looked like a huge blanket lowered by ropes at its four corners settled on the ground.
12 In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds.
12 Every kind of animal and reptile and bird you could think of was on it.
13 Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.”
13 Then a voice came: "Go to it, Peter - kill and eat."
14 “No, Lord,” Peter declared. “I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean. ”
14 Peter said, "Oh, no, Lord. I've never so much as tasted food that was not kosher."
15 But the voice spoke again: “Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.”
15 The voice came a second time: "If God says it's okay, it's okay."
16 The same vision was repeated three times. Then the sheet was suddenly pulled up to heaven.
16 This happened three times, and then the blanket was pulled back up into the skies.
17 Peter was very perplexed. What could the vision mean? Just then the men sent by Cornelius found Simon’s house. Standing outside the gate,
17 As Peter, puzzled, sat there trying to figure out what it all meant, the men sent by Cornelius showed up at Simon's front door.
18 they asked if a man named Simon Peter was staying there.
18 They called in, asking if there was a Simon, also called Peter, staying there.
19 Meanwhile, as Peter was puzzling over the vision, the Holy Spirit said to him, “Three men have come looking for you.
19 Peter, lost in thought, didn't hear them, so the Spirit whispered to him, "Three men are knocking at the door looking for you.
20 Get up, go downstairs, and go with them without hesitation. Don’t worry, for I have sent them.”
20 Get down there and go with them. Don't ask any questions. I sent them to get you."
21 So Peter went down and said, “I’m the man you are looking for. Why have you come?”
21 Peter went down and said to the men, "I think I'm the man you're looking for. What's up?"
22 They said, “We were sent by Cornelius, a Roman officer. He is a devout and God-fearing man, well respected by all the Jews. A holy angel instructed him to summon you to his house so that he can hear your message.”
22 They said, "Captain Cornelius, a God-fearing man well-known for his fair play - ask any Jew in this part of the country - was commanded by a holy angel to get you and bring you to his house so he could hear what you had to say."
23 So Peter invited the men to stay for the night. The next day he went with them, accompanied by some of the brothers from Joppa.
23 Peter invited them in and made them feel at home.
24 They arrived in Caesarea the following day. Cornelius was waiting for them and had called together his relatives and close friends.
24 A day later they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had his relatives and close friends waiting with him.
25 As Peter entered his home, Cornelius fell at his feet and worshiped him.
25 The minute Peter came through the door, Cornelius was up on his feet greeting him - and then down on his face worshiping him!
26 But Peter pulled him up and said, “Stand up! I’m a human being just like you!”
26 Peter pulled him up and said, "None of that - I'm a man and only a man, no different from you."
27 So they talked together and went inside, where many others were assembled.
27 Talking things over, they went on into the house, where Cornelius introduced Peter to everyone who had come.
28 Peter told them, “You know it is against our laws for a Jewish man to enter a Gentile home like this or to associate with you. But God has shown me that I should no longer think of anyone as impure or unclean.
28 Peter addressed them, "You know, I'm sure that this is highly irregular. Jews just don't do this - visit and relax with people of another race. But God has just shown me that no race is better than any other.
29 So I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. Now tell me why you sent for me.”
29 So the minute I was sent for, I came, no questions asked. But now I'd like to know why you sent for me."
30 Cornelius replied, “Four days ago I was praying in my house about this same time, three o’clock in the afternoon. Suddenly, a man in dazzling clothes was standing in front of me.
30 Cornelius said, "Four days ago at about this time, midafternoon, I was home praying. Suddenly there was a man right in front of me, flooding the room with light.
31 He told me, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your gifts to the poor have been noticed by God!
31 He said, 'Cornelius, your daily prayers and neighborly acts have brought you to God's attention.
32 Now send messengers to Joppa, and summon a man named Simon Peter. He is staying in the home of Simon, a tanner who lives near the seashore.’
32 I want you to send to Joppa to get Simon, the one they call Peter. He's staying with Simon the Tanner down by the sea.'
33 So I sent for you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here, waiting before God to hear the message the Lord has given you.”
33 "So I did it - I sent for you. And you've been good enough to come. And now we're all here in God's presence, ready to listen to whatever the Master put in your heart to tell us."
34 Then Peter replied, “I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism.
34 Peter fairly exploded with his good news: "It's God's own truth, nothing could be plainer: God plays no favorites!
35 In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right.
35 It makes no difference who you are or where you're from - if you want God and are ready to do as he says, the door is open.
36 This is the message of Good News for the people of Israel—that there is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.
36 The Message he sent to the children of Israel - that through Jesus Christ everything is being put together again - well, he's doing it everywhere, among everyone.
37 You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee, after John began preaching his message of baptism.
37 "You know the story of what happened in Judea. It began in Galilee after John preached a total life-change.
38 And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
38 Then Jesus arrived from Nazareth, anointed by God with the Holy Spirit, ready for action. He went through the country helping people and healing everyone who was beaten down by the Devil. He was able to do all this because God was with him.
39 “And we apostles are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a cross,
39 "And we saw it, saw it all, everything he did in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem where they killed him, hung him from a cross.
40 but God raised him to life on the third day. Then God allowed him to appear,
40 But in three days God had him up, alive, and out where he could be seen.
41 not to the general public, but to us whom God had chosen in advance to be his witnesses. We were those who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
41 Not everyone saw him - he wasn't put on public display. Witnesses had been carefully handpicked by God beforehand - us! We were the ones, there to eat and drink with him after he came back from the dead.
42 And he ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God to be the judge of all—the living and the dead.
42 He commissioned us to announce this in public, to bear solemn witness that he is in fact the One whom God destined as Judge of the living and dead.
43 He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying that everyone who believes in him will have their sins forgiven through his name.”
43 But we're not alone in this. Our witness that he is the means to forgiveness of sins is backed up by the witness of all the prophets."
44 Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message.
44 No sooner were these words out of Peter's mouth than the Holy Spirit came on the listeners.
45 The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too.
45 The believing Jews who had come with Peter couldn't believe it, couldn't believe that the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on "outsider" Gentiles,
46 For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God. Then Peter asked,
46 but there it was - they heard them speaking in tongues, heard them praising God.
47 “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?”
47 "Do I hear any objections to baptizing these friends with water? They've received the Holy Spirit exactly as we did."
48 So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterward Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several days.
48 Hearing no objections, he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay on for a few days.
