1 Pedro y Juan ante el Concilio<br />Mientras Pedro y Juan le hablaban a la gente, se vieron enfrentados por los sacerdotes, el capitán de la guardia del templo y algunos de los saduceos.

2 Estos líderes estaban sumamente molestos porque Pedro y Juan enseñaban a la gente que hay resurrección de los muertos por medio de Jesús.

3 Los arrestaron y, como ya era de noche, los metieron en la cárcel hasta la mañana siguiente.

4 Pero muchos de los que habían oído el mensaje lo creyeron, así que el número de creyentes ascendió a un total aproximado de cinco mil hombres, sin contar a las mujeres y a los niños.

5 Al día siguiente, el Concilio —integrado por todos los gobernantes, ancianos y maestros de la ley religiosa— se reunió en Jerusalén.

6 El sumo sacerdote, Anás, estaba presente junto con Caifás, Juan, Alejandro y otros parientes del sumo sacerdote.

7 Hicieron entrar a los dos discípulos y les preguntaron:<br />—¿Con qué poder o en nombre de quién han hecho esto?

8 Entonces Pedro, lleno del Espíritu Santo, les dijo:<br />—Gobernantes y ancianos de nuestro pueblo,

9 ¿nos interrogan hoy por haber hecho una buena obra a un inválido? ¿Quieren saber cómo fue sanado?

10 Déjenme decirles claramente tanto a ustedes como a todo el pueblo de Israel que fue sanado por el poderoso nombre de Jesucristo de Nazaret,<br /> el hombre a quien ustedes crucificaron pero a quien Dios levantó de los muertos.

11 Pues es Jesús a quien se refieren las Escrituras cuando dicen:<br />“La piedra que ustedes, los constructores, rechazaron<br />ahora se ha convertido en la piedra principal”<br />.

12 »¡En ningún otro hay salvación! Dios no ha dado ningún otro nombre bajo el cielo, mediante el cual podamos ser salvos».

13 Los miembros del Concilio quedaron asombrados cuando vieron el valor de Pedro y de Juan, porque veían que eran hombres comunes sin ninguna preparación especial en las Escrituras. También los identificaron como hombres que habían estado con Jesús.

14 Sin embargo, dado que podían ver allí de pie entre ellos al hombre que había sido sanado, no hubo nada que el Concilio pudiera decir.

15 Así que les ordenaron a Pedro y a Juan que salieran de la sala del Concilio,<br /> y consultaron entre ellos.

16 «¿Qué debemos hacer con estos hombres? —se preguntaban unos a otros—. No podemos negar que han hecho una señal milagrosa, y todos en Jerusalén ya lo saben.

17 Así que para evitar que sigan divulgando su propaganda aún más, tenemos que advertirles que no vuelvan a hablar con nadie en el nombre de Jesús».

18 Entonces llamaron nuevamente a los apóstoles y les ordenaron que nunca más hablaran ni enseñaran en el nombre de Jesús.

19 Pero Pedro y Juan respondieron:<br />«¿Acaso piensan que Dios quiere que los obedezcamos a ustedes en lugar de a él?

20 Nosotros no podemos dejar de hablar acerca de todo lo que hemos visto y oído».

21 Entonces el Concilio los amenazó aún más, pero finalmente los dejaron ir porque no sabían cómo castigarlos sin desatar un disturbio. Pues todos alababan a Dios

22 por esa señal milagrosa, la sanidad de un hombre que había estado lisiado por más de cuarenta años.

23 Los creyentes oran por valentía<br />Tan pronto como quedaron libres, Pedro y Juan volvieron adonde estaban los demás creyentes y les contaron lo que los sacerdotes principales y los ancianos les habían dicho.

24 Cuando los creyentes oyeron las noticias, todos juntos alzaron sus voces en oración a Dios: «Oh Señor Soberano, Creador del cielo y de la tierra, del mar y de todo lo que hay en ellos,

25 hace mucho tiempo tú hablaste por el Espíritu Santo mediante nuestro antepasado David, tu siervo, y dijiste:<br />“¿Por qué estaban tan enojadas las naciones?<br />¿Por qué perdieron el tiempo en planes inútiles?

26 Los reyes de la tierra se prepararon para la batalla,<br />los gobernantes se reunieron<br />en contra del Señor<br />y en contra de su Mesías<br />”.

27 »De hecho, ¡eso ha ocurrido aquí en esta misma ciudad! Pues Herodes Antipas, el gobernador Poncio Pilato, los gentiles<br /> y el pueblo de Israel estaban todos unidos en contra de Jesús, tu santo siervo, a quien tú ungiste.

28 Sin embargo, todo lo que hicieron ya estaba determinado de antemano de acuerdo con tu voluntad.

29 Y ahora, oh Señor, escucha sus amenazas y danos a nosotros, tus siervos, mucho valor al predicar tu palabra.

30 Extiende tu mano con poder sanador; que se hagan señales milagrosas y maravillas por medio del nombre de tu santo siervo Jesús».

31 Después de esta oración, el lugar donde estaban reunidos tembló y todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo. Y predicaban con valentía la palabra de Dios.

32 Los creyentes comparten sus bienes<br />Todos los creyentes estaban unidos de corazón y en espíritu. Consideraban que sus posesiones no eran propias, así que compartían todo lo que tenían.

33 Los apóstoles daban testimonio con poder de la resurrección del Señor Jesús y la gran bendición de Dios estaba sobre todos ellos.

34 No había necesitados entre ellos, porque los que tenían terrenos o casas los vendían

35 y llevaban el dinero a los apóstoles para que ellos lo dieran a los que pasaban necesidad.

36 Por ejemplo, había un tal José, a quien los apóstoles le pusieron el sobrenombre Bernabé (que quiere decir «hijo de ánimo»). Él pertenecía a la tribu de Leví y era oriundo de la isla de Chipre.

37 Vendió un campo que tenía y llevó el dinero a los apóstoles.

1 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people.

2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.

3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day.

4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.

5 The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem.

6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family.

7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”

8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!

9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed,

10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.

11 Jesus is “ ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.

15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.

16 “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it.

17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”

18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!

20 As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened.

22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.

24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.

25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: “ ‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?

26 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one. ’

27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.

28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.

29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.

30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.

33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all

34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales

35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”),

37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.
