Acts 4:1-22

CSB 1 Now as they were speaking to the people, the priests, the commander of the temple guard, and the Sadducees confronted them, NIV 1 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. CSB 2 because they were provoked that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in the person of Jesus the resurrection from the dead. NIV 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. CSB 3 So they seized them and put them in custody until the next day, since it was already evening. NIV 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. CSB 4 But many of those who heard the message believed, and the number of the men came to about 5,000. NIV 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand. CSB 5 The next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem NIV 5 The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. CSB 6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John and Alexander, and all the members of the high-priestly family. NIV 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. CSB 7 After they had Peter and John stand before them, they asked the question: "By what power or in what name have you done this?" NIV 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?” CSB 8 Then Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders: NIV 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! CSB 9 If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a disabled man-by what means he was healed- NIV 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, CSB 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene-whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead-by Him this man is standing here before you healthy. NIV 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. CSB 11 This [Jesus] is The stone despised by you builders, who has become the cornerstone. NIV 11 Jesus is “ ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ CSB 12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved." NIV 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” CSB 13 When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and knew that they had been with Jesus. NIV 13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. CSB 14 And since they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in response. NIV 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. CSB 15 After they had ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin, they conferred among themselves, NIV 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. CSB 16 saying, "What should we do with these men? For an obvious sign, evident to all who live in Jerusalem, has been done through them, and we cannot deny it! NIV 16 “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it. CSB 17 But so this does not spread any further among the people, let's threaten them against speaking to anyone in this name again." NIV 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.” CSB 18 So they called for them and ordered them not to preach or teach at all in the name of Jesus. NIV 18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. CSB 19 But Peter and John answered them, "Whether it's right in the sight of God [for us] to listen to you rather than to God, you decide; NIV 19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! CSB 20 for we are unable to stop speaking about what we have seen and heard." NIV 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” CSB 21 After threatening them further, they released them. They found no way to punish them, because the people were all giving glory to God over what had been done; NIV 21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. CSB 22 for the man was over 40 years old on whom this sign of healing had been performed. NIV 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
