Acts 8:4-25

ESV 4 Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. MSG 4 Forced to leave home base, the Christians all became missionaries. Wherever they were scattered, they preached the Message about Jesus. ESV 5 Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. MSG 5 Going down to a Samaritan city, Philip proclaimed the Message of the Messiah. ESV 6 And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. MSG 6 When the people heard what he had to say and saw the miracles, the clear signs of God's action, they hung on his every word. ESV 7 For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. MSG 7 Many who could neither stand nor walk were healed that day. The evil spirits protested loudly as they were sent on their way. ESV 8 So there was much joy in that city. MSG 8 And what joy in the city! ESV 9 But there was a man named Simon, who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great. MSG 9 Previous to Philip's arrival, a certain Simon had practiced magic in the city, posing as a famous man and dazzling all the Samaritans with his wizardry. ESV 10 They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, "This man is the power of God that is called Great." MSG 10 He had them all, from little children to old men, eating out of his hand. They all thought he had supernatural powers, and called him "the Great Wizard." ESV 11 And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. MSG 11 He had been around a long time and everyone was more or less in awe of him. ESV 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. MSG 12 But when Philip came to town announcing the news of God's kingdom and proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ, they forgot Simon and were baptized, becoming believers right and left! ESV 13 Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed. MSG 13 Even Simon himself believed and was baptized. From that moment he was like Philip's shadow, so fascinated with all the God-signs and miracles that he wouldn't leave Philip's side. ESV 14 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, MSG 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem received the report that Samaria had accepted God's Message, they sent Peter and John down ESV 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, MSG 15 to pray for them to receive the Holy Spirit. ESV 16 for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. MSG 16 Up to this point they had only been baptized in the name of the Master Jesus; the Holy Spirit hadn't yet fallen on them. ESV 17 Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. MSG 17 Then the apostles laid their hands on them and they did receive the Holy Spirit. ESV 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, MSG 18 When Simon saw that the apostles by merely laying on hands conferred the Spirit, he pulled out his money, excited, ESV 19 saying, "Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." MSG 19 and said, "Sell me your secret! Show me how you did that! How much do you want? Name your price!" ESV 20 But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! MSG 20 Peter said, "To hell with your money! And you along with it. Why, that's unthinkable - trying to buy God's gift! ESV 21 You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. MSG 21 You'll never be part of what God is doing by striking bargains and offering bribes. ESV 22 Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. MSG 22 Change your ways - and now! Ask the Master to forgive you for trying to use God to make money. ESV 23 For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity." MSG 23 I can see this is an old habit with you; you reek with money-lust." ESV 24 And Simon answered, "Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me." MSG 24 "Oh!" said Simon, "pray for me! Pray to the Master that nothing like that will ever happen to me!" ESV 25 Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans. MSG 25 And with that, the apostles were on their way, continuing to witness and spread the Message of God's salvation, preaching in every Samaritan town they passed through on their return to Jerusalem.
