Acts 8:5-25

ESV 5 Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. NIV 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. ESV 6 And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. NIV 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. ESV 7 For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. NIV 7 For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. ESV 8 So there was much joy in that city. NIV 8 So there was great joy in that city. ESV 9 But there was a man named Simon, who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great. NIV 9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, ESV 10 They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, "This man is the power of God that is called Great." NIV 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.” ESV 11 And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. NIV 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. ESV 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. NIV 12 But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. ESV 13 Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed. NIV 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw. ESV 14 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, NIV 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. ESV 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, NIV 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, ESV 16 for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. NIV 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. ESV 17 Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. NIV 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. ESV 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, NIV 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money ESV 19 saying, "Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." NIV 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” ESV 20 But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! NIV 20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! ESV 21 You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. NIV 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. ESV 22 Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. NIV 22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. ESV 23 For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity." NIV 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.” ESV 24 And Simon answered, "Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me." NIV 24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.” ESV 25 Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans. NIV 25 After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.
