MSG 1 In the third year of the reign of King Cyrus of Persia, a message was made plain to Daniel, whose Babylonian name was Belteshazzar. The message was true. It dealt with a big war. He understood the message, the understanding coming by revelation: NIV 1 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar). Its message was true and it concerned a great war. The understanding of the message came to him in a vision. MSG 2 "During those days, I, Daniel, went into mourning over Jerusalem for three weeks. NIV 2 At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. MSG 3 I ate only plain and simple food, no seasoning or meat or wine. I neither bathed nor shaved until the three weeks were up. NIV 3 I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over. MSG 4 "On the twenty-fourth day of the first month I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris. NIV 4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, MSG 5 I looked up and to my surprise saw a man dressed in linen with a belt of pure gold around his waist. NIV 5 I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. MSG 6 His body was hard and glistening, as if sculpted from a precious stone, his face radiant, his eyes bright and penetrating like torches, his arms and feet glistening like polished bronze, and his voice, deep and resonant, sounded like a huge choir of voices. NIV 6 His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude. MSG 7 "I, Daniel, was the only one to see this. The men who were with me, although they didn't see it, were overcome with fear and ran off and hid, fearing the worst. NIV 7 I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. MSG 8 Left alone after the appearance, abandoned by my friends, I went weak in the knees, the blood drained from my face. NIV 8 So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless. MSG 9 "I heard his voice. At the sound of it I fainted, fell flat on the ground, face in the dirt. NIV 9 Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground. MSG 10 A hand touched me and pulled me to my hands and knees. NIV 10 A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. MSG 11 "'Daniel,' he said, 'man of quality, listen carefully to my message. And get up on your feet. Stand at attention. I've been sent to bring you news.' "When he had said this, I stood up, but I was still shaking. NIV 11 He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling. MSG 12 "'Relax, Daniel,' he continued, 'don't be afraid. From the moment you decided to humble yourself to receive understanding, your prayer was heard, and I set out to come to you. NIV 12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. MSG 13 But I was waylaid by the angel-prince of the kingdom of Persia NIV 13 But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. MSG 14 and was delayed for a good three weeks. But then Michael, one of the chief angel-princes, intervened to help me. I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia. And now I'm here to help you understand what will eventually happen to your people. The vision has to do with what's ahead.' NIV 14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.” MSG 15 "While he was saying all this, I looked at the ground and said nothing. NIV 15 While he was saying this to me, I bowed with my face toward the ground and was speechless. MSG 16 Then I was surprised by something like a human hand that touched my lips. I opened my mouth and started talking to the messenger: 'When I saw you, master, I was terror-stricken. My knees turned to water. I couldn't move. NIV 16 Then one who looked like a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, “I am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and I feel very weak. MSG 17 How can I, a lowly servant, speak to you, my master? I'm paralyzed. I can hardly breathe!' NIV 17 How can I, your servant, talk with you, my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe.” MSG 18 "Then this humanlike figure touched me again and gave me strength. NIV 18 Again the one who looked like a man touched me and gave me strength. MSG 19 He said, 'Don't be afraid, friend. Peace. Everything is going to be all right. Take courage. Be strong.' "Even as he spoke, courage surged up within me. I said, 'Go ahead, let my master speak. You've given me courage.' NIV 19 “Do not be afraid, you who are highly esteemed,” he said. “Peace! Be strong now; be strong.” When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength.” MSG 20 "He said, 'Do you know why I've come here to you? I now have to go back to fight against the angel-prince of Persia, and when I get him out of the way, the angel-prince of Greece will arrive. NIV 20 So he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come; MSG 21 But first let me tell you what's written in The True Book. No one helps me in my fight against these beings except Michael, your angel-prince. NIV 21 but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. (No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.
