2 Luego deberás apartar tres ciudades de refugio en la tierra que el Señor<br /> tu Dios te da.

3 Estudia el territorio<br /> y divide en tres regiones esa tierra que el Señor<br /> te da, de modo que haya una de las ciudades en cada región. Entonces cualquier persona que haya matado a otra podrá huir a una de las ciudades de refugio para ponerse a salvo.

4 »Si un individuo mata a otro accidentalmente y sin enemistad previa, el responsable de la muerte podrá huir a cualquiera de esas ciudades para vivir a salvo.

5 Por ejemplo, supongamos que una persona va con un vecino a cortar leña al bosque, y cuando uno de los dos levanta el hacha para cortar un árbol, la cabeza del hacha se desprende del mango y mata a la otra persona. En tales casos, el responsable de la muerte puede huir a una de las ciudades de refugio para vivir a salvo.

6 »Si la ciudad de refugio más cercana quedara demasiado lejos, un vengador enfurecido podría rastrear al que causó la muerte y quitarle la vida. En ese caso, la persona moriría injustamente, porque nunca antes había mostrado enemistad hacia el muerto.

7 Por esa razón, te ordeno que apartes tres ciudades de refugio.

8 »Si el Señor<br /> tu Dios extiende tu territorio como les juró a tus antepasados y te entrega toda la tierra que les prometió,

9 deberás designar otras tres ciudades de refugio adicionales. (Él te dará esa tierra si te aseguras de obedecer todos los mandatos que te di, es decir, si siempre amas al Señor<br /> tu Dios y andas en sus caminos).

10 De esa manera, evitarás que mueran personas inocentes en la tierra que el Señor<br /> tu Dios te da como tu preciada posesión. Entonces no serás responsable de la muerte de inocentes.

11 »Pero supongamos que alguien está enemistado con un vecino y le tiende una emboscada a propósito y lo mata, y luego huye a una de las ciudades de refugio.

12 En ese caso, los ancianos de la ciudad del asesino enviarán representantes a la ciudad de refugio para traerlo de regreso y entregarlo al vengador del muerto para que le quite la vida.

13 ¡No sientas lástima por ese asesino! Limpia a Israel de la culpa de asesinar a personas inocentes; entonces todo te saldrá bien.

14 Interés por la justicia<br />»Cuando llegues a la tierra que el Señor<br /> tu Dios te da como preciada posesión, nunca le robes terreno a otro cambiando de lugar los límites de propiedad que tus antepasados establecieron.

15 »No condenes a nadie por algún crimen o delito basado en el testimonio de un solo testigo. Los hechos del caso deben ser establecidos por el testimonio de dos o tres testigos.

16 »Si un testigo malicioso se presenta y acusa a alguien de haber cometido algún crimen o delito,

17 tanto el que acusa como el acusado deberán presentarse ante el Señor<br /> al acudir a los sacerdotes y a los jueces que estén en ejercicio en esos días.

18 Los jueces tendrán que investigar el caso a fondo. Si el acusador presentara cargos falsos contra otro israelita,

19 le impondrás a él la sentencia que pretendía para la otra persona. De ese modo, limpiarás esa maldad que hay en medio de ti.

20 Entonces el resto del pueblo se enterará del caso y tendrá temor de cometer semejante maldad.

21 ¡No muestres compasión por el culpable! La regla que seguirás es vida por vida, ojo por ojo, diente por diente, mano por mano, pie por pie.

New International Version NIV

1 When the LORD your God has destroyed the nations whose land he is giving you, and when you have driven them out and settled in their towns and houses,

2 then set aside for yourselves three cities in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess.

3 Determine the distances involved and divide into three parts the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that a person who kills someone may flee for refuge to one of these cities.

4 This is the rule concerning anyone who kills a person and flees there for safety—anyone who kills a neighbor unintentionally, without malice aforethought.

5 For instance, a man may go into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and as he swings his ax to fell a tree, the head may fly off and hit his neighbor and kill him. That man may flee to one of these cities and save his life.

6 Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue him in a rage, overtake him if the distance is too great, and kill him even though he is not deserving of death, since he did it to his neighbor without malice aforethought.

7 This is why I command you to set aside for yourselves three cities.

8 If the LORD your God enlarges your territory, as he promised on oath to your ancestors, and gives you the whole land he promised them,

9 because you carefully follow all these laws I command you today—to love the LORD your God and to walk always in obedience to him—then you are to set aside three more cities.

10 Do this so that innocent blood will not be shed in your land, which the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance, and so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.

11 But if out of hate someone lies in wait, assaults and kills a neighbor, and then flees to one of these cities,

12 the killer shall be sent for by the town elders, be brought back from the city, and be handed over to the avenger of blood to die.

13 Show no pity. You must purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood, so that it may go well with you.

14 Do not move your neighbor’s boundary stone set up by your predecessors in the inheritance you receive in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess.

15 One witness is not enough to convict anyone accused of any crime or offense they may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

16 If a malicious witness takes the stand to accuse someone of a crime,

17 the two people involved in the dispute must stand in the presence of the LORD before the priests and the judges who are in office at the time.

18 The judges must make a thorough investigation, and if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against a fellow Israelite,

19 then do to the false witness as that witness intended to do to the other party. You must purge the evil from among you.

20 The rest of the people will hear of this and be afraid, and never again will such an evil thing be done among you.

21 Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
