Deuteronomy 32

DBY 1 Give ear, ye heavens, and I will speak; And hear, O earth, the words of my mouth! NIV 1 Listen, you heavens, and I will speak; hear, you earth, the words of my mouth. DBY 2 My doctrine shall drop as rain, My speech flow down as dew, As small rain upon the tender herb, And as showers on the grass. NIV 2 Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants. DBY 3 For the name of Jehovah will I proclaim: Ascribe greatness unto our God! NIV 3 I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! DBY 4 [He is] the Rock, his work is perfect, For all his ways are righteousness; A God of faithfulness without deceit, Just and right is he. NIV 4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. DBY 5 They have dealt corruptly with him; Not his children's is their spot: -- A crooked and perverted generation! NIV 5 They are corrupt and not his children; to their shame they are a warped and crooked generation. DBY 6 Do ye thus requite Jehovah, Foolish and unwise people? Is not he thy father that hath bought thee? Hath he not made thee and established thee? NIV 6 Is this the way you repay the LORD, you foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you? DBY 7 Remember the days of old, Consider the years of generation to generation; Ask thy father, and he will shew thee; Thine elders, and they will tell thee. NIV 7 Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past. Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders, and they will explain to you. DBY 8 When the Most High assigned to the nations their inheritance, When he separated the sons of Adam, He set the bounds of the peoples According to the number of the children of Israel. NIV 8 When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided all mankind, he set up boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel. DBY 9 For Jehovah's portion is his people; Jacob the lot of his inheritance. NIV 9 For the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance. DBY 10 He found him in a desert land, And in the waste, howling wilderness; He compassed him about, he watched over him, He preserved him as the apple of his eye. NIV 10 In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye, DBY 11 As the eagle stirreth up its nest, Hovereth over its young, Spreadeth out its wings, Taketh them, beareth them on its feathers, NIV 11 like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft. DBY 12 So Jehovah alone did lead him, And no strange ·god [was] with him. NIV 12 The LORD alone led him; no foreign god was with him. DBY 13 He made him ride on the high places of the earth, And he ate the produce of the field; And he made him suck honey out of the crag, And oil out of the flinty rock; NIV 13 He made him ride on the heights of the land and fed him with the fruit of the fields. He nourished him with honey from the rock, and with oil from the flinty crag, DBY 14 Cream of kine, and milk of sheep, With the fat of lambs, And rams of the breed of Bashan, and he-goats, With the fat of kidneys of wheat; And thou didst drink pure wine, the blood of the grape. NIV 14 with curds and milk from herd and flock and with fattened lambs and goats, with choice rams of Bashan and the finest kernels of wheat. You drank the foaming blood of the grape. DBY 15 Then Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked -- Thou art waxen fat, Thou art grown thick, And thou art covered with fatness; -- He gave up God who made him, And lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation. NIV 15 Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; filled with food, they became heavy and sleek. They abandoned the God who made them and rejected the Rock their Savior. DBY 16 They moved him to jealousy with strange gods, With abominations did they provoke him to anger. NIV 16 They made him jealous with their foreign gods and angered him with their detestable idols. DBY 17 They sacrificed unto demons who are not God; To gods whom they knew not, To new ones, who came newly up, Whom your fathers revered not. NIV 17 They sacrificed to false gods, which are not God— gods they had not known, gods that recently appeared, gods your ancestors did not fear. DBY 18 Of the Rock that begot thee wast thou unmindful, And thou hast forgotten God who brought thee forth. NIV 18 You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth. DBY 19 And Jehovah saw it, and despised them, Because of the provoking of his sons and of his daughters. NIV 19 The LORD saw this and rejected them because he was angered by his sons and daughters. DBY 20 And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be; For they are a perverse generation, Children in whom is no faithfulness. NIV 20 “I will hide my face from them,” he said, “and see what their end will be; for they are a perverse generation, children who are unfaithful. DBY 21 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is no God; They have exasperated me with their vanities; And I will move them to jealousy with that which is not a people; With a foolish nation will I provoke them to anger. NIV 21 They made me jealous by what is no god and angered me with their worthless idols. I will make them envious by those who are not a people; I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding. DBY 22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, And it shall burn into the lowest Sheol, And shall consume the earth and its produce, And set fire to the foundations of the mountains. NIV 22 For a fire will be kindled by my wrath, one that burns down to the realm of the dead below. It will devour the earth and its harvests and set afire the foundations of the mountains. DBY 23 I will heap mischiefs upon them; Mine arrows will I spend against them. NIV 23 “I will heap calamities on them and spend my arrows against them. DBY 24 They shall be consumed with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, And with poisonous pestilence; And the teeth of beasts will I send against them, With the poison of what crawleth in the dust. NIV 24 I will send wasting famine against them, consuming pestilence and deadly plague; I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts, the venom of vipers that glide in the dust. DBY 25 From without shall the sword bereave them, and in the chambers, terror -- Both the young man and the virgin, The suckling with the man of gray hairs. NIV 25 In the street the sword will make them childless; in their homes terror will reign. The young men and young women will perish, the infants and those with gray hair. DBY 26 I would say, I will scatter, I will make the remembrance of them to cease from among men, NIV 26 I said I would scatter them and erase their name from human memory, DBY 27 If I did not fear provocation from the enemy, Lest their adversaries should misunderstand it, Lest they should say, Our hand is high, and Jehovah has not done all this. NIV 27 but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy, lest the adversary misunderstand and say, ‘Our hand has triumphed; the LORD has not done all this.’ ” DBY 28 For they are a nation void of counsel, And understanding is not in them. NIV 28 They are a nation without sense, there is no discernment in them. DBY 29 Oh that they had been wise! they would have understood this, They would have considered their latter end! NIV 29 If only they were wise and would understand this and discern what their end will be! DBY 30 How could one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Were it not that their Rock had sold them, And Jehovah had delivered them up? NIV 30 How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the LORD had given them up? DBY 31 For their rock is not as our Rock: Let our enemies themselves be judges. NIV 31 For their rock is not like our Rock, as even our enemies concede. DBY 32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, And of the fields of Gomorrah: Their grapes are grapes of poison, Bitter are their clusters; NIV 32 Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are filled with poison, and their clusters with bitterness. DBY 33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, And the cruel venom of vipers. NIV 33 Their wine is the venom of serpents, the deadly poison of cobras. DBY 34 Is not this hidden with me, Sealed up among my treasures? NIV 34 “Have I not kept this in reserve and sealed it in my vaults? DBY 35 Vengeance is mine, and recompense, For the time when their foot shall slip. For the day of their calamity is at hand, And the things that shall come upon them make haste. NIV 35 It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.” DBY 36 For Jehovah will judge his people, And shall repent in favour of his servants; When he seeth that power is gone, And there is none shut up or left. NIV 36 The LORD will vindicate his people and relent concerning his servants when he sees their strength is gone and no one is left, slave or free. DBY 37 And he shall say, Where are their gods, Their rock in whom they trusted, NIV 37 He will say: “Now where are their gods, the rock they took refuge in, DBY 38 Who ate the fat of their sacrifices, [And] drank the wine of their drink-offering? Let them rise up and help you, That there may be a protection over you. NIV 38 the gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise up to help you! Let them give you shelter! DBY 39 See now that I, I am HE, And there is no god with me; I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal, And there is none that delivereth out of my hand, NIV 39 “See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand. DBY 40 For I lift up my hand to the heavens, and say, I live for ever! NIV 40 I lift my hand to heaven and solemnly swear: As surely as I live forever, DBY 41 If I have sharpened my gleaming sword, And my hand take hold of judgment, I will render vengeance to mine adversaries, And will recompense them that hate me. NIV 41 when I sharpen my flashing sword and my hand grasps it in judgment, I will take vengeance on my adversaries and repay those who hate me. DBY 42 Mine arrows will I make drunk with blood, And my sword shall devour flesh; [I will make them drunk] with the blood of the slain and of the captives, With the head of the princes of the enemy. NIV 42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood, while my sword devours flesh: the blood of the slain and the captives, the heads of the enemy leaders.” DBY 43 Shout for joy, ye nations, with his people, For he avengeth the blood of his servants, And rendereth vengeance to his enemies, And maketh atonement for his land, for his people. NIV 43 Rejoice, you nations, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants; he will take vengeance on his enemies and make atonement for his land and people. DBY 44 And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he and Hoshea the son of Nun. NIV 44 Moses came with Joshua son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people. DBY 45 And when Moses had ended speaking all these words to all Israel, NIV 45 When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, DBY 46 he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words that I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to take heed to do, all the words of this law. NIV 46 he said to them, “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. DBY 47 For it is no vain word for you, but it is your life, and through this word ye shall prolong your days on the land whereunto ye pass over the Jordan to possess it. NIV 47 They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.” DBY 48 And Jehovah spoke to Moses that same day, saying, NIV 48 On that same day the LORD told Moses, DBY 49 Go up into this mountain Abarim, mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, which is opposite Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession, NIV 49 “Go up into the Abarim Range to Mount Nebo in Moab, across from Jericho, and view Canaan, the land I am giving the Israelites as their own possession. DBY 50 and die on the mountain whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy peoples, as Aaron thy brother died on mount Hor, and was gathered unto his peoples; NIV 50 There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people. DBY 51 because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye hallowed me not in the midst of the children of Israel. NIV 51 This is because both of you broke faith with me in the presence of the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh in the Desert of Zin and because you did not uphold my holiness among the Israelites. DBY 52 For thou shalt see the land before [thee]; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel. NIV 52 Therefore, you will see the land only from a distance; you will not enter the land I am giving to the people of Israel.”
