Deuteronomy 5:1-21

NRSA 1 Moses convened all Israel, and said to them: Hear, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances that I am addressing to you today; you shall learn them and observe them diligently. NIV 1 Moses summoned all Israel and said: Hear, Israel, the decrees and laws I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. NRSA 2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. NIV 2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. NRSA 3 Not with our ancestors did the Lord make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. NIV 3 It was not with our ancestors that the LORD made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today. NRSA 4 The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the fire. NIV 4 The LORD spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain. NRSA 5 (At that time I was standing between the Lord and you to declare to you the words of the Lord; for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said: NIV 5 (At that time I stood between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said: NRSA 6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; NIV 6 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. NRSA 7 you shall have no other gods before me. NIV 7 “You shall have no other gods before me. NRSA 8 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. NIV 8 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. NRSA 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and fourth generation of those who reject me, NIV 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, NRSA 10 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. NIV 10 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. NRSA 11 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. NIV 11 “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. NRSA 12 Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. NIV 12 “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you. NRSA 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work. NIV 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, NRSA 14 But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as you. NIV 14 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do. NRSA 15 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day. NIV 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. NRSA 16 Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. NIV 16 “Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you. NRSA 17 You shall not murder. NIV 17 “You shall not murder. NRSA 18 Neither shall you commit adultery. NIV 18 “You shall not commit adultery. NRSA 19 Neither shall you steal. NIV 19 “You shall not steal. NRSA 20 Neither shall you bear false witness against your neighbor. NIV 20 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. NRSA 21 Neither shall you covet your neighbor's wife. Neither shall you desire your neighbor's house, or field, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. NIV 21 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor’s house or land, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
