New Living Translation NLT
Common English Bible CEB
1 Then God gave the people all these instructions :
1
Then God spoke all these words:
2 “I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
2
I am the LORD your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
3 “You must not have any other god but me.
3
You must have no other gods before me.
4 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
4
Do not make an idol for yourself—no form whatsoever—of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth.
5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.
5
Do not bow down to them or worship them, because I, the LORD your God, am a passionate God. I punish children for their parents' sins even to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me.
6 But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
6
But I am loyal and gracious to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 “You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
7
Do not use the LORD your God's name as if it were of no significance; the LORD won't forgive anyone who uses his name that way.
8 “Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
8
Remember the Sabbath day and treat it as holy.
9 You have six days each week for your ordinary work,
9
Six days you may work and do all your tasks,
10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.
10
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. Do not do any work on it—not you, your sons or daughters, your male or female servants, your animals, or the immigrant who is living with you.
11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
11
Because the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them in six days, but rested on the seventh day. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12 “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
12
Honor your father and your mother so that your life will be long on the fertile land that the LORD your God is giving you.
13 “You must not murder.
13
Do not kill.
14 “You must not commit adultery.
14
Do not commit adultery.
15 “You must not steal.
15
Do not steal.
16 “You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
16
Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.
17 “You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”
17
Do not desire your neighbor's house. Do not desire and try to take your neighbor's wife, male or female servant, ox, donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.
18 When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.
18
When all the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the horn, and the mountain smoking, the people shook with fear and stood at a distance.
19 And they said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!”
19
They said to Moses, "You speak to us, and we'll listen. But don't let God speak to us, or we'll die."
20 “Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them, “for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!”
20
Moses said to the people, "Don't be afraid, because God has come only to test you and to make sure you are always in awe of God so that you don't sin."
21 As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was.
21
The people stood at a distance while Moses approached the thick darkness in which God was present.
22 And the LORD said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven.
22
The LORD said to Moses: "Say this to the Israelites: You saw for yourselves how I spoke with you from heaven.
23 Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me.
23
Don't make alongside me gods of silver or gold for yourselves.
24 “Build for me an altar made of earth, and offer your sacrifices to me—your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats, and your cattle. Build my altar wherever I cause my name to be remembered, and I will come to you and bless you.
24
Make for me an altar from fertile soil on which to sacrifice your entirely burned offerings, your well-being sacrifices, your sheep, and your oxen. I will come to you and bless you in every place where I make sure my name is remembered.
25 If you use stones to build my altar, use only natural, uncut stones. Do not shape the stones with a tool, for that would make the altar unfit for holy use.
25
But if you do make for me an altar from stones, don't build it with chiseled stone since using your chisel on the stone will make it impure.
26 And do not approach my altar by going up steps. If you do, someone might look up under your clothing and see your nakedness.
26
Don't climb onto my altar using steps: then your genitals won't be exposed by doing so."
