Ezekiel 22

NCV

GNT

1 The Lord spoke his word to me, saying:
1 The Lord spoke to me.
2 "And you, human, will you judge? Will you judge the city of murderers? Then tell her about all her hateful acts.
2 "Mortal man," he said, "are you ready to judge the city that is full of murderers? Make clear to her all the disgusting things she has done.
3 You are to say: 'This is what the Lord God says: You are a city that kills those who come to live there. You make yourself unclean by making idols.
3 Tell the city what I, the Sovereign Lord, am saying: Because you have murdered so many of your own people and have defiled yourself by worshiping idols, your time is coming.
4 You have become guilty of murder and have become unclean by your idols which you have made. So you have brought your time of punishment near; you have come to the end of your years. That is why I have made you a shame to the nations and why all lands laugh at you.
4 You are guilty of those murders and are defiled by the idols you made, and so your day is coming, your time is up! That is why I have let the nations make fun of you and all the countries sneer at you.
5 Those near and those far away laugh at you with your bad name, you city full of confusion.
5 Countries nearby and countries far away sneer at you because of your lawlessness.
6 "'Jerusalem, see how each ruler of Israel in you has been trying to kill people.
6 All Israel's leaders trust in their own strength and commit murder.
7 The people in you hate their fathers and mothers. They mistreat the foreigners in you and wrong the orphans and widows in you.
7 None of you in the city honor your parents. You cheat foreigners and take advantage of widows and orphans.
8 You hate my holy things and dishonor my Sabbaths.
8 You have no respect for the holy places, and you don't keep the Sabbath.
9 The men in you tell lies to cause the death of others. The people in you eat food offered to idols at the mountain places of worship, and they take part in sexual sins.
9 Some of your people tell lies about others in order to have them put to death. Some of them eat sacrifices offered to idols. Some are always satisfying their lusts.
10 The men in you have sexual relations with their fathers' wives and with women who are unclean, during their time of monthly bleeding.
10 Some of them sleep with their father's wife. Some force women to have intercourse with them during their period.
11 One man in you does a hateful act with his neighbor's wife, while another has shamefully made his daughter-in-law unclean sexually. And another forces his half sister to have sexual relations with him.
11 Some commit adultery, and others seduce their daughters-in-law or their half sisters.
12 The people in you take money to kill others. You take unfair interest and profits and make profits by mistreating your neighbor. And you have forgotten me, says the Lord God.
12 Some of your people murder for pay. Some charge interest on the loans they make to other Israelites and get rich by taking advantage of them. They have forgotten me." The Sovereign Lord has spoken.
13 "'So, Jerusalem, I will shake my fist at you for stealing money and for murdering people.
13 "I will bring my fist down on your robberies and murders.
14 Will you still be brave and strong when I punish you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will act.
14 Do you think you will have any courage left or have strength enough to lift your hand when I am finished with you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and I keep my word.
15 I will scatter you among the nations and spread you through the countries. That is how I will get rid of your uncleanness.
15 I will scatter your people to every country and nation and will put an end to your evil actions.
16 But you, yourself, will be dishonored in the sight of the nations. Then you will know that I am the Lord.'"
16 And so the other nations will dishonor you, but you will know that I am the Lord."
17 The Lord spoke his word to me, saying:
17 The Lord said to me,
18 "Human, the people of Israel have become useless like scum to me. They are like the copper, tin, iron, and lead left in the furnace when silver is purified.
18 "Mortal man, the Israelites are of no use to me. They are like waste metal - copper, tin, iron, and lead - left over after silver has been refined in a furnace.
19 So this is what the Lord God says: 'Because you have become useless like scum, I am going to put you together inside Jerusalem.
19 So now I, the Sovereign Lord, am telling them that they are just as useless as that. I will bring them all together in Jerusalem
20 People put silver, copper, iron, lead, and tin together inside a furnace to melt them down in a blazing fire. In the same way I will gather you in my hot anger and put you together in Jerusalem and melt you down.
20 in the same way that the ore of silver, copper, iron, lead, and tin is put in a refining furnace. My anger and rage will melt them the way fire melts ore.
21 I will put you together and make you feel the heat of my anger. You will be melted down inside Jerusalem.
21 Yes, I will gather them in Jerusalem, build a fire under them, and melt them with my anger.
22 As silver is melted in a furnace, you will be melted inside the city. Then you will know that I, the Lord, have poured out my anger on you.'"
22 They will be melted in Jerusalem the way silver is melted in a furnace, and then they will know that they are feeling the anger of the Lord."
23 The Lord spoke his word to me, saying:
23 The Lord spoke to me again.
24 "Human, say to the land, 'You are a land that has not had rain or showers when God is angry.'
24 "Mortal man," he said, "tell the Israelites that their land is unholy, and so I am punishing it in my anger.
25 Like a roaring lion that tears the animal it has caught, Israel's rulers make evil plans. They have destroyed lives and have taken treasure and valuable things. They have caused many women to become widows.
25 The leaders are like lions roaring over the animals they have killed. They kill the people, take all the money and property they can get, and by their murders leave many widows.
26 Israel's priests do cruel things to my teachings and do not honor my holy things. They make no difference between holy and unholy things, and they teach there is no difference between clean and unclean things. They do not remember my Sabbaths, so I am dishonored by them.
26 The priests break my law and have no respect for what is holy. They make no distinction between what is holy and what is not. They do not teach the difference between clean and unclean things, and they ignore the Sabbath. As a result the people of Israel do not respect me.
27 Like wolves tearing a dead animal, Jerusalem's leaders have killed people for profit.
27 The government officials are like wolves tearing apart the animals they have killed. They commit murder in order to get rich.
28 And the prophets try to cover this up by false visions and by lying messages. They say, 'This is what the Lord God says' when the Lord has not spoken.
28 The prophets have hidden these sins like workers covering a wall with whitewash. They see false visions and make false predictions. They claim to speak the word of the Sovereign Lord, but I, the Lord, have not spoken to them.
29 The people cheat others and steal. They hurt people who are poor and needy. They cheat foreigners and do not treat them fairly.
29 The wealthy cheat and rob. They mistreat the poor and take advantage of foreigners.
30 "I looked for someone to build up the walls and to stand before me where the walls are broken to defend these people so I would not have to destroy them. But I could not find anyone.
30 I looked for someone who could build a wall, who could stand in the places where the walls have crumbled and defend the land when my anger is about to destroy it, but I could find no one.
31 So I let them see my anger. I destroyed them with an anger that was like fire because of all the things they have done, says the Lord God."
31 So I will turn my anger loose on them, and like a fire I will destroy them for what they have done." The Sovereign Lord has spoken.
