Ezekiel 29

HNV

MSG

1 In the tenth year, in the tenth [month], in the twelfth [day] of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
1 In the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day, God's Message came to me:
2 Son of man, set your face against Par`oh king of Mitzrayim, and prophesy against him, and against all Mitzrayim;
2 "Son of man, confront Pharaoh king of Egypt. Preach against him and all the Egyptians.
3 speak, and say, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against you, Par`oh king of Mitzrayim, the great monster that lies in the midst of his rivers, that has said, My river is my own, and I have made it for myself.
3 Tell him, 'God, the Master, says: "'Watch yourself, Pharaoh, king of Egypt. I'm dead set against you, You lumbering old dragon, lolling and flaccid in the Nile, Saying, "It's my Nile. I made it. It's mine."
4 I will put hooks in your jaws, and I will cause the fish of your rivers to stick to your scales; and I will bring you up out of the midst of your rivers, with all the fish of your rivers which stick to your scales.
4 I'll set hooks in your jaw; I'll make the fish of the Nile stick to your scales. I'll pull you out of the Nile, with all the fish stuck to your scales.
5 I will cast you forth into the wilderness, you and all the fish of your rivers: you shall fall on the open field; you shall not be brought together, nor gathered; I have given you for food to the animals of the eretz and to the birds of the sky.
5 Then I'll drag you out into the desert, you and all the Nile fish sticking to your scales. You'll lie there in the open, rotting in the sun, meat to the wild animals and carrion birds.
6 All the inhabitants of Mitzrayim shall know that I am the LORD, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Yisra'el.
6 Everybody living in Egypt will realize that I am God.
7 When they took hold of you by your hand, you did break, and did tear all their shoulders; and when they leaned on you, you broke, and mad all their loins to be at a stand.
7 so that when they gripped you, you splintered and cut their hand, and when they leaned on you, you broke and sent them sprawling
8 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will bring a sword on you, and will cut off from you man and animal.
8 - Message of God, the Master - I'll bring war against you, do away with people and animals alike,
9 The land of Mitzrayim shall be a desolation and a waste; and they shall know that I am the LORD. Because he has said, The river is mine, and I have made it;
9 and turn the country into an empty desert so they'll realize that I am God.
10 therefore, behold, I am against you, and against your rivers, and I will make the land of Mitzrayim an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Seven even to the border of Kush.
10 therefore I am against you and your rivers. I'll reduce Egypt to an empty, desolate wasteland all the way from Migdol in the north to Syene and the border of Ethiopia in the south.
11 No foot of man shall pass through it, nor foot of animal shall pass through it, neither shall it be inhabited forty years.
11 Not a human will be seen in it, nor will an animal move through it. It'll be just empty desert, empty for forty years.
12 I will make the land of Mitzrayim a desolation in the midst of the countries that are desolate; and her cities among the cities that are laid waste shall be a desolation forty years; and I will scatter the Mitzrim among the nations, and will disperse them through the countries.
12 "'I'll make Egypt the most desolate of all desolations. For forty years I'll make her cities the most wasted of all wasted cities. I'll scatter Egyptians to the four winds, send them off every which way into exile.
13 For thus says the Lord GOD: At the end of forty years will I gather the Mitzrim from the peoples where they were scattered;
13 "'But,' says God, the Master, 'that's not the end of it. After the forty years, I'll gather up the Egyptians from all the places where they've been scattered.
14 and I will bring back the captivity of Mitzrayim, and will cause them to return into the land of Patros, into the land of their birth; and they shall be there a base kingdom.
14 I'll put things back together again for Egypt. I'll bring her back to Pathros where she got her start long ago. There she'll start over again from scratch.
15 It shall be the base of the kingdoms; neither shall it any more lift itself up above the nations: and I will diminish them, that they shall no more rule over the nations.
15 She'll take her place at the bottom of the ladder and there she'll stay, never to climb that ladder again, never to be a world power again.
16 It shall be no more the confidence of the house of Yisra'el, bringing iniquity to memory, when they turn to look after them: and they shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
16 Never again will Israel be tempted to rely on Egypt. All she'll be to Israel is a reminder of old sin. Then Egypt will realize that I am God, the Master.'"
17 It came to pass in the seven and twentieth year, in the first [month], in the first [day] of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
17 In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, God's Message came to me:
18 Son of man, Nevukhadretztzar king of Bavel caused his army to serve a great service against Tzor: every head was made bald, and every shoulder was worn; yet had he no wages, nor his army, from Tzor, for the service that he had served against it.
18 "Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, has worn out his army against Tyre. They've worked their fingers to the bone and have nothing to show for it.
19 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will give the land of Mitzrayim to Nevukhadretztzar king of Bavel; and he shall carry off her multitude, and take her spoil, and take her prey; and it shall be the wages for his army.
19 "Therefore, God, the Master, says, 'I'm giving Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He'll haul away its wealth, pick the place clean. He'll pay his army with Egyptian plunder.
20 I have given him the land of Mitzrayim as his recompense for which he served, because they worked for me, says the Lord GOD.
20 He's been working for me all these years without pay. This is his pay: Egypt. Decree of God, the Master.
21 In that day will I cause a horn to bud forth to the house of Yisra'el, and I will give you the opening of the mouth in the midst of them; and they shall know that I am the LORD.
21 "'And then I'll stir up fresh hope in Israel - the dawn of deliverance! - and I'll give you, Ezekiel, bold and confident words to speak. And they'll realize that I am God.'"
