Genesis 34:17-27

CEBA 17 But if you don't listen to us and become circumcised, we will take our daughter and leave." NIV 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go.” CEBA 18 Their idea seemed like a good one to Hamor and Hamor's son Shechem. NIV 18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. CEBA 19 The young man didn't waste any time doing this because he liked Jacob's daughter so much. He was more respected than anyone else in his father's household. NIV 19 The young man, who was the most honored of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. CEBA 20 Hamor and his son Shechem went to their city's gate and spoke to the men of their city: NIV 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to the men of their city. CEBA 21 "These men want peace with us. Let them live in the land and travel through it; there's plenty of land for them. We will marry their daughters and give them our daughters. NIV 21 “These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours. CEBA 22 But the men will agree to live with us and become one people only if we circumcise every male just as they do. NIV 22 But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are. CEBA 23 Their livestock, their property, and all of their animals—won't they be ours? Let's agree with them and let them live with us." NIV 23 Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us.” CEBA 24 Everyone at the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, so every able-bodied male in the city was circumcised. NIV 24 All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised. CEBA 25 On the third day, when they were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons and Dinah's brothers Simeon and Levi took their swords, came into the city, which suspected nothing, and killed every male. NIV 25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male. CEBA 26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with their swords, took Dinah from Shechem's household, and left. NIV 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem’s house and left. CEBA 27 When Jacob's other sons discovered the dead, they looted the city that had defiled their sister. NIV 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled.
